The selection of a sweet potato cultivar for minimal processing must be performed considering the nutritional value and the lower susceptibility to browning development, which will result in greater stability of the vegetable colour. The aim of this work was to evaluate browning susceptibility in four sections of two sweet potato cultivars combining chemical and enzymatic determinations with colour variables, by applying multivariate statistical techniques. Each cultivar had a characteristic browning pattern; in white cultivar colour changes were represented by changes in variable b* while in the red cultivar these changes responded to variations in variable a*.The regions with major colour changes (ΔE*>6) after 24 hours also had high levels of phenolic compounds (658±98 mg chlorogenic acid/kg fresh tissue) and high oxidative enzymes activities. Principal Component Analysis indicated that three regions in white cultivar and two in red cultivar had low browning susceptibility. Partial Least Square analysis indicated that colour changes (ΔE*) were highly associated with Polyphenoloxidase activity and phenolic compounds. By comparing both cultivars analyzed, the white cultivar presented 3 regions with low browning susceptibility and therefore would be more suitable for minimally processing. This low susceptibility would be related to low phenol content and lower enzyme activities.Centro de Investigación y Desarrollo en Criotecnología de Alimentos (CIDCA)Facultad de Ciencias Agrarias y Forestales (FCAF

Background: A major question in behavioural ecology concerns the relationship between genetic mating systems and the strength of sexual selection. In this study, we investigated the genetic mating system of the two-spotted goby (Gobiusculus flavescens), a useful fish model for the study of sexual selection whose genetic mating system remains uncharacterized. We developed four polymorphic microsatellite markers and used them to conduct parentage analyses on 21 nests collected during the breeding season to examine the rates of multiple mating by males and to test for evidence of alternative mating strategies. Results: Results of this study indicate that male G. flavescens mate with multiple females and enjoy confidence of paternity. We detected only one instance of sneaking, so cuckoldry contributed a very small percentage (~0.1%) of the total fertilizations in this population. Nests were nearly full and males that maintain larger nests have higher mating and reproductive success, irrespective of body size. Conclusion: Overall, our investigation shows that G. flavescens is similar to other, related gobies in that the nests of care-giving males often contain eggs from multiple females. However, G. flavescens differs from other gobies in displaying an extremely low rate of cuckoldry. The study of ecological factors responsible for this important<br /

Remagnetización alpina en la Serra del Cadí (Pirineo Oriental)

The eastern Pyrenees, particularly the Cadi Range, displays the less density and quality of paleomagnetic data of the chain. This paper revisited one of the central sections (Pobla de Lillet) where we have resampled Permian, Maastrichtian and Paleocene rocks. Best results were attained in the Permian red sandstones and in the Cretaceous limestones. In the Permian, two components with paleomagnetic meaning were identified. The high temperature component (up to 670 ° C) is similar to that defined in pioneering works, it appears to be primary and does not show significant rotations. The intermediate temperature component (up to 500 ° C), not identified in previous works, seems to be a syntectonic remagnetization with Alpine age. The characterization of rotations and the extension of this remagnetization (as an additional source of kinematics information) should be addressed in Permian rocks in future works since the paleomagnetic signal of Cenozoic rocks is of lower qualityTrabajo financiado con los Proyectos Pmag3Drest-CGL2009-14214 y DR3AM- CGL2014-55118 del MINECO y del 3DR3- PI165/09 del Gobierno de Aragón.Peer Reviewe

Background: Homelessness is associated with increased morbidity, mortality and health care use. The aim of this study was to examine the role of mental disorders in relation to the use of 1) daytime primary health care services and 2) after hours primary health care emergency room (PHER) services among homeless shelter users in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area, Finland. Methods: The study cohort consists of all 158 homeless persons using the four shelters operating in the study area during two selected nights. The health records were analyzed over a period of 3 years prior to the sample nights and data on morbidity and primary health care visits were gathered. We used negative binomial regression to estimate the association between mental disorders and daytime visits to primary health care and after hours visits to PHERs. Results: During the 3 years the 158 homeless persons in the cohort made 1410 visits to a physician in primary health care. The cohort exhibited high rates of mental disorders, including substance use disorders (SUDs); i.e. 141 persons (89%) had a mental disorder. We found dual diagnosis, defined as SUD concurring with other mental disorder, to be strongly associated with daytime primary health care utilization (IRR 11.0, 95% CI 5.9-20.6) when compared with those without any mental disorder diagnosis. The association was somewhat weaker for those with only SUDs (IRR 4.9, 95% CI 2.5-9.9) or with only other mental disorders (IRR 5.0, 95% CI 2.4-10.8). When focusing upon the after hours visits to PHERs we observed that both dual diagnosis (IRR 14.1, 95% CI 6.3-31.2) and SUDs (11.5, 95% CI 5.7-23.3) were strongly associated with utilization of PHERs compared to those without any mental disorder. In spite of a high numbers of visits, we found undertreatment of chronic conditions such as hypertension and diabetes. Conclusions: Dual diagnosis is particularly strongly associated with primary health care daytime visits among homeless persons staying in shelters, while after hours visits to primary health care level emergency rooms are strongly associated with both dual diagnosis and SUDs. Active treatment for SUDs could reduce the amount of emergency visits made by homeless shelter users.Peer reviewe

Unexpected residual habitats raise hope for the survival of the fan mussel Pinna nobilis along the Occitan coast (Northwest Mediterranean Sea)

    Get PDF
In 2019, the status of the Mediterranean fan mussel Pinna nobilis was elevated to ‘Critically Endangered’ on the IUCN Red List, in response to the pandemic caused by the parasite Haplosporidium pinnae. Identifying refuge habitats, free from parasites, is critical to the survival of the mussel. The distribution of P. nobilis was investigated along the Occitan coast (Northwest Mediterranean Sea) because of the presence of a unique lagoonal system that may provide potential refuges. Interviews with users and managers were conducted to identify target zones where the species was sighted. In situ surveys were carried out to define the main aggregations of fan mussels and characterize the habitat. Line transects were deployed to count and measure individuals to estimate density, abundance, and size distribution. Population densities were variable, ranging from 0.6 ± 0.2 (SE) to 70.8 ± 7.6 ind. 100 m−2, representing one of the highest densities re - ported in the Mediterranean Sea. The total abundance of individuals across the coast was extra - polated to 163 000, with 87% located in Thau and Salses-Leucate, highlighting these lagoons as essential for the survival of the species. This study also revealed the diversity of habitats colonized by P. nobilis. In the context of the pandemic, only the lagoon populations remain unaffected and provide natural refuges that have disappeared from all open-water coastal areas. However, the conditions in these lagoons could become unfavorable, leading to the collapse of the last P. nobilis populations. We therefore propose that Thau and Salses-Leucate lagoons, which harbor the largest remaining populations of P. nobilis, should be declared as conservation priorities.En prens

The distribution of neutral hydrogen is studied in the region defined by eq. (1). After subtracting a broad Gaussian component, which could be interpreted as the emission of a hot inter-cloud medium, a Gaussian analysis of the residual 21-cm profiles was performed. The resultant components, of small velocity dispersion, have counterparts in interstellar absorption lines of Na I and Ca II. They could have originated by an expanding phenomenon (like a supernova explosion) produced within the gas related to feature A of Lindblad by stars of the association Sco OB2. As the paper will be published elsewhere, we give here only a synthesis.Asociación Argentina de Astronomí
