The decline of natural sciences : confronting diminishing interest, fewer scientists and poorer working conditions in western countries. A comparative analysis between Spain and the United Kingdom
This study sets out to determine if the interest in and study of natural sciences is declining in western countries as scientists currently contend. Part one demonstrates how survey results reveal a decline of interest in scientific news in the EU. Part two explores the decline of interest further through examining data such as the number of students interested in scientific subjects and scientific careers. We compare data from two different countries: the UK and Spain. Within the study the UK represents the Anglo Saxon culture (traditionally more interested in science) and Spain represents the Latin culture (traditionally less interested). We conclude that in both regions there is a lack of interest in scientific subjects.
crisis informativas. This research are included in a doctoral thesis about information flows between scientists and press. We use participative research methods. For that, the author got a fellowship of CSIC, the biggest spanish research center, and worked as a member of its press office during a six months periods. This article shows how scientific press offices have a very big influence in
spanish press. Also the research proves how messages is manipulated and how the scientific sources are selected in order to indentify scientific and politics criteria. For demostrate how this manipulation is done, I analyse press information about Doñana ecological catastrophe published in 1998 in spanish national newspapers from april to july. Also these dates proves the
relationship with general theories about informative crisis
This article tries to demonstrate the Furio Colombos statement that scientific journalism
is the better example of something called «subordinate news», which is a wrong
professional behaviour very widespread in present journalism. According with Colombo, this phenomenon happens when sources have a strong level of credibility themselves,
so it contributes journalists do not try a proper contrast statements declared by
this sources. Colombo exemplifies his hypothesis with social sciences such as sociology.
However, in this article we try to extend his reflexion to the natural sciences field.
First of all, we analyze what types of sources are used in the Spanish scientific journalism.
We found that the majority of them (48,1 %) come from the Consejo Superior
de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), the bigger public research organization, ruled by
the government (so by politicians). The second sources more cited by Spanish journalists
are scientific journals (Nature and Science). In this article, we try to describe
why journalists abide so often by this type of sources and the consequences of these
attitudes in the future of scientific information.
This research is only a first qualitative approximation to the phenomenon of the garbage- television in Spain. It is attempted to give a definition and is approached the fact that the society does not clear frontiers between what is garbage-television and what it is not. Also it is analysed two of the worse damage that has this manufactured garbage-television: the incorporation of untruthful expert because of the lack of real expert that want participate as a ‘florero’-expert that extend their credibility to the rest of the television program. Also it is evidence a lack of external control to the producer or the network television for a contrasting the precedents of the guests. This provokes that they appear as real histories what is not but fiction of a rascal who wants be earned the life
The Convergent Culture and the Web 2.0 Philosophy in the Reformulation of the Scientific Communication during the Era of Cyber-Journalism
between journalists and their sources. The communication among
scientists and between scientific sources and society has changed as
well. Nowadays journalists, scientists, bloggers or any curious person
from anywhere can access without any problem to every scientific
institution web sites. So the scientific source (e.g. NASA) could be
considered as mass media itself; and because of that some scientists
could produce science “designed” for feed the “media” they belong
to. Science is ruled by the audience dictatorship as mass media do.
In an international discipline such as science, the new cybernetic
environment has changed the scientific communication more than
ever. In this article, we analyze these changes according to the rules
of a new paradigm called “convergence culture” and the developing
Web 2.0 philosophy
The Influence of Mass Media in the Student´s Choice of Scientific Subjects. Analysis of Spanish Database (1988-2001) from A-Levels to University Career
So many experts consider that really exists a strong scientific careers crisis in western countries. In
this study we try to analyze this phenomenon since the point of view of the scientist image in the mass
media (movies, press and television). For do it we use the data registration in the Spanish secondary
schools and universities since academic year 1988/89 to 2000/2001 and we compared with different
news . As a conclusion of this analysis can be indicated that the mass media offer a negative approach to the scientific world. Obviously, mass media are not determinants at the moment of choosing
professional options, but all studies in communication theory shows that exists a strong relationships
between what we think and what we hear/read/watch in mass media about the world. Perhaps the
scientific careers crisis will be only a collateral effect in the decline of science cultural impact at the
present times. As a conclusion we could prove there is a relationships between student registration in
science/literacy and the problems about sciences careers they can read in newspapers
"Nature" and scientific news
In this paper, the author analyzes how the magazine «Nature» influences over the sociology
of science and the scientific news published in the Spanish press. To measure
how much the prestigious magazine above mentioned influences the Spanish press, a
quantitative study has been carried out in six Spanish newspapers with a nationwide
daily circulation
Google and Wikipedia as Resources 2.0 for Health information: From hierarchical algorithms to the journalist search for the truth
This article analyzes how the web 2.0 ecosystem, which promotes active audiences, might be dangerous for health
information. It considers some examples of health crisis or controversial subjects. It denounces how the Google algorithms or
the Wikipedia neutrality give place to authentic antiscientific charlatans that defend outrageous hypothesis as homeopathy and
the ant vaccination movement. The article concludes that Internet makes it necessary as never before the work of specialized
journalism, whose main mission is to differentiate the reliable sources from the charlatan.
