Reliable capacity planning despite uncertain disassembly, regeneration and reassembly workloads by using statistical and mathematical approaches - Validation in subsidiaries of a global MRO company with operations in Asia, Europe and North America

    Get PDF
The MRO industry faces substantial challenges with regard to the capacity planning of disassembly and reassembly work. This is due to the unknown workloads when regenerating complex investment goods and is caused, in particular, by the uncertain degree of disassembly and the complex challenges of reassembly. Forecasting techniques based on Bayesian networks are developed along with mathematical models which optimize capacity utilization, job order and the resulting costs. The approaches are tested and validated in conjunction with an MRO company with global operations. The results show possibilities for enhancing the planning processes and are found to be transferable on an international scale regardless of sociocultural and process differences.DFG/CRC/87

Spatial correlations of singularity strengths in multifractal branching processes

The n-point statistics of singularity strength variables for multiplicative branching processes is calculated from an analytic expression of the corresponding multivariate generating function. The key ingredient is a branching generating function which can be understood as a natural generalisation of the multifractal mass exponents. Various random multiplicative cascade processes pertaining to fully developed turbulence are discussed.Comment: REVTeX, 18 pages, 5 PS figs, submitted to PR

Dynamically Monitoring Production Methods for Identifying Structural Changes relevant to Logistics

    Get PDF
Due to the growing dynamic and complexity within the market environment production enterprises in particular are faced with new logistic challenges. Moreover, it is here in this dynamic environment that the Logistic Operating Curve Theory also reaches its limits as a method for describing the correlations between the logistic objectives. In order to convert this theory into a method for dynamically monitoring productions this paper will introduce methods for reliably and quickly identifying structural changes relevant to logistics

Gain and Loss in Quantum Cascade Lasers

We report gain calculations for a quantum cascade laser using a fully self-consistent quantum mechanical approach based on the theory of nonequilibrium Green functions. Both the absolute value of the gain as well as the spectral position at threshold are in excellent agreement with experimental findings for T=77 K. The gain strongly decreases with temperature.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures directly include

Die Bekämpfung der Säuglingssterblichkeit um die Jahrhundertwende: Deutschland und das Beispiel Dresden

    Get PDF
Jahrhunderts in Deutschland widmen.

Slowing the spread of COVID-19: Review of “Social distancing” interventions deployed by public transit in the United States and Canada

This paper presents a review of social distancing measures deployed by transit agencies in the United States and Canada during the COVID-19 pandemic and discusses how specific operators across the two countries have implemented changes. Challenges and impacts on their operations are also provided. Social distancing is one of the community mitigation measures traditionally implemented during influenza pandemics and the novel coronavirus pandemic. Research has shown that social distancing is effective in containing the spread of disease. This is applicable to the current situation with the novel coronavirus, given the lack of effective vaccines and treatments in the United States and Canada in the first eight months of the pandemic. Moreover, social distancing is particularly useful in settings where community transmission is substantial. Directives for social distancing were issued in several states and public transit operators were charged with how to provide for physical distance of six feet between passengers on their property including physical infrastructure such as station buildings and rolling infrastructure (rolling stock) including trains, subway cars and buses. Operational changes were also required due to physical distancing, e.g. adding train cars to provide for opportunities to physically distance on the train. Examples of some measures discussed in this research includes taping off every other seat on buses, increasing the total length of trains by adding cars, separating bus drivers from passengers with plastic sheeting, rear door boarding, etc. This research also analyzes long-term impacts for transit operators and challenges to encourage passengers to return to public transit after lockdown requirements ordered by government officials are lifted. A section on the policies that are being explored by government to continue to sustain public transportation is also included

Comprehensive Validation of the Regeneration Workload Forecast for Complex Capital Goods Using Data Mining

    Get PDF
Capacity planning in the regeneration of complex capital goods faces major challenges because it is affected by a high level of uncertain workload information. A methodology is developed here to predict the regeneration workload on the basis of the CRISP-DM model using Bayesian networks. The forecasts are validated for the different capacity planning levels. The results support the conclusion that capacity planning can gain permanent benefits from the methodology developed
