High rate of extrapair paternity in a human population demonstrates diversity in human reproductive strategies.
Among nonhuman species, social monogamy is rarely accompanied by complete fidelity. Evolutionary theory predicts that the rate of extrapair paternity (EPP) should vary according to socioecological conditions. In humans, however, geneticists contend that EPP is negligible and relatively invariable. This conclusion is based on a limited set of studies, almost all of which describe European-descent groups. Using a novel, double-blind method designed in collaboration with a community of Himba pastoralists, we find that the rate of EPP in this population is 48%, with 70% of couples having at least one EPP child. Both men and women were very accurate at detecting cases of EPP. These data suggest that the range of variation in EPP across human populations is substantially greater than previously thought. We further show that a high rate of EPP can be accompanied by high paternity confidence, which highlights the importance of disaggregating EPP from the notion of "cuckoldry.
The Interpersonal Effects of Emotions in Money versus Candy Games
Emotional expressions significantly influence perceivers’ behavior in economic games and negotiations. The current research examined the interpersonal effects of emotions when such information cannot be used to guide behavior for increasing personal gain and when monetary rewards are made salient. For this, a one-shot Public Goods Game (Studies 1, 2, and 3) and Dictator Game (Studies 4 and 5) were employed, in which the dominant strategy to maximize personal payoff is independent from the counterplayers’ intention signaled through their facial expressions (happiness, sadness, and anger). To elicit a monetary
mindset, we used money (vs. candy) as the mode of exchange in the games with (Studies 1 and 2) or without (Studies 3, 4, and 5) additional contextual framing (i.e. Wall Street Game vs. Community Game). Across five studies (N = 1211), participants were found to be more generous towards happy and sad targets compared to angry ones. Such behavioral response based on emotional information was accounted for by the trait impressions (i.e. likability, trustworthiness) formed of the counterplayer. This effect was significantly reduced when money acted as the mode of exchange, thereby making participants focus more on their selfgain. Together, the findings extend previous work by highlighting the social functional role of emotions in human exchange and its moderation by money as a transaction medium

Sustainability performance measurement : a preliminary classification framework of models and indicators
In this position paper we focus on the diversity of sustainability measurements. Based on existing research on performance measurement, we propose a preliminary classification framework summarizing sustainability models and indicators. By describing illustrative examples, we claim that several models and indicators can be distinguished with their own peculiarities. Having such a framework is interesting for both academia and business to structure the range of models and indicators and to ultimately select the appropriate sustainability measurement approach. The proposed framework should be validated by further research
Constant-angle surfaces in liquid crystals
We discuss some properties of surfaces in R3 whose unit normal has constant angle with an assigned direction field. The constant angle condition can be rewritten as an Hamilton-Jacobi equation correlating the surface and the direction field. Are the Dorsa Argentea on Mars eskers?
The Dorsa Argentea are an extensive assemblage of ridges in the southern high latitudes of Mars. They have previously been interpreted as eskers formed by deposition of sediment in subglacial meltwater conduits, implying a formerly more extensive south polar ice sheet. In this study, we undertake the first large-scale statistical analysis of aspects of the geometry and morphology of the Dorsa Argentea in comparison with terrestrial eskers in order to evaluate this hypothesis. The ridges are re-mapped using integrated topographic (MOLA) and image (CTX/HRSC) data, and their planar geometries compared to recent characterisations of terrestrial eskers. Quantitative tests for esker-like relationships between ridge height, crest morphology and topography are then completed for four major Dorsa Argentea ridges. The following key conclusions are reached: (1) Statistical distributions of lengths and sinuosities of the Dorsa Argentea are similar to those of terrestrial eskers in Canada. (2) Planar geometries across the Dorsa Argentea support formation of ridges in conduits extending towards the interior of an ice sheet that thinned towards its northern margin, perhaps terminating in a proglacial lake. (3) Variations in ridge crest morphology are consistent with observations of terrestrial eskers. (4) Statistical tests of previously observed relationships between ridge height and longitudinal bed slope, similar to those explained by the physics of meltwater flow through subglacial meltwater conduits for terrestrial eskers, confirm the strength of these relationships for three of four major Dorsa Argentea ridges. (5) The new quantitative characterisations of the Dorsa Argentea may provide useful constraints for parameters in modelling studies of a putative former ice sheet in the south polar regions of Mars, its hydrology, and mechanisms that drove its eventual retreat.FEGB is funded by STFC grant ST/N50421X/1 and is grateful for bursaries provided by The Open University, The Ogden Trust and the British Society for Geomorphology. Adaptive Horizon Model Predictive Control and Al'brekht's Method
A standard way of finding a feedback law that stabilizes a control system to
an operating point is to recast the problem as an infinite horizon optimal
control problem. If the optimal cost and the optmal feedback can be found on a
large domain around the operating point then a Lyapunov argument can be used to
verify the asymptotic stability of the closed loop dynamics. The problem with
this approach is that is usually very difficult to find the optimal cost and
the optmal feedback on a large domain for nonlinear problems with or without
constraints. Hence the increasing interest in Model Predictive Control (MPC).
In standard MPC a finite horizon optimal control problem is solved in real time
but just at the current state, the first control action is implimented, the
system evolves one time step and the process is repeated. A terminal cost and
terminal feedback found by Al'brekht's methoddefined in a neighborhood of the
operating point is used to shorten the horizon and thereby make the nonlinear
programs easier to solve because they have less decision variables. Adaptive
Horizon Model Predictive Control (AHMPC) is a scheme for varying the horizon
length of Model Predictive Control (MPC) as needed. Its goal is to achieve
stabilization with horizons as small as possible so that MPC methods can be

Conclusive quantum steering with superconducting transition edge sensors
Quantum steering allows two parties to verify shared entanglement even if one
measurement device is untrusted. A conclusive demonstration of steering through
the violation of a steering inequality is of considerable fundamental interest
and opens up applications in quantum communication. To date all experimental
tests with single photon states have relied on post-selection, allowing
untrusted devices to cheat by hiding unfavourable events in losses. Here we
close this "detection loophole" by combining a highly efficient source of
entangled photon pairs with superconducting transition edge sensors. We achieve
an unprecedented ~62% conditional detection efficiency of entangled photons and
violate a steering inequality with the minimal number of measurement settings
by 48 standard deviations. Our results provide a clear path to practical

Parameter Estimation and Quantitative Parametric Linkage Analysis with GENEHUNTER-QMOD
Objective: We present a parametric method for linkage analysis of quantitative phenotypes. The method provides a test for linkage as well as an estimate of different phenotype parameters. We have implemented our new method in the program GENEHUNTER-QMOD and evaluated its properties by performing simulations. Methods: The phenotype is modeled as a normally distributed variable, with a separate distribution for each genotype. Parameter estimates are obtained by maximizing the LOD score over the normal distribution parameters with a gradient-based optimization called PGRAD method. Results: The PGRAD method has lower power to detect linkage than the variance components analysis (VCA) in case of a normal distribution and small pedigrees. However, it outperforms the VCA and Haseman-Elston regression for extended pedigrees, nonrandomly ascertained data and non-normally distributed phenotypes. Here, the higher power even goes along with conservativeness, while the VCA has an inflated type I error. Parameter estimation tends to underestimate residual variances but performs better for expectation values of the phenotype distributions. Conclusion: With GENEHUNTER-QMOD, a powerful new tool is provided to explicitly model quantitative phenotypes in the context of linkage analysis. Discovery of the Acoustic Faraday Effect in Superfluid 3He-B
We report the discovery of the acoustic Faraday effect in superfluid 3He-B.
The observation of this effect provides the first direct evidence for
propagating transverse acoustic waves in liquid 3He, a mode first predicted by
Landau in 1957. The Faraday rotation is large and observable because of
spontaneously broken spin-orbit symmetry in 3He-B. We compare the experimental
observations with a simulation of the transverse acoustic impedance that
