    NiP/SiC composite coatings: the effects of particles on the electrochemical behaviour

    NiP/SiC (17 at.% P) composite coatings were prepared by electrodeposition from a Brenner type plating bath containing SiC particles. Cyclic voltammetry and immersion time were used to evaluate the electrochemical behaviour of these coatings. The results showed that the presence of SiC particles in NiP alloy increased corrosion properties, because the exposed area of the metallic matrix was reduced due to its recovering by SiC particles. However, the current densities developed by the NiP/SiC composite coatings increased with increasing amount of incorporated particles, and such effect is more remarkable for small particles, after heat treatment and when the systems are polarized

    Semiclassical thermodynamics of scalar fields

    We present a systematic semiclassical procedure to compute the partition function for scalar field theories at finite temperature. The central objects in our scheme are the solutions of the classical equations of motion in imaginary time, with spatially independent boundary conditions. Field fluctuations -- both field deviations around these classical solutions, and fluctuations of the boundary value of the fields -- are resummed in a Gaussian approximation. In our final expression for the partition function, this resummation is reduced to solving certain ordinary differential equations.     Inoculation With Piriformospora indica Is More Efficient in Wild-Type Rice Than in Transgenic Rice Over-Expressing the Vacuolar H+-PPase

    Achieving food security in a context of environmental sustainability is one of the main challenges of the XXI century. Two competing strategies to achieve this goal are the use of genetically modified plants and the use of plant growth promoting microorganisms (PGPMs). However, few studies assess the response of genetically modified plants to PGPMs. The aim of this study was to compare the response of over expressing the vacuolar H+-PPase (AVP) and wild-type rice types to the endophytic fungus; Piriformospora indica. Oryza sativa plants (WT and AVP) were inoculated with P. indica and 30 days later, morphological, ecophysiological and bioenergetic parameters, and nutrient content were assessed. AVP and WT plant heights were strongly influenced by inoculation with P. indica, which also promoted increases in fresh and dry matter of shoot in both genotypes. This may be related with the stimulatory effect of P. indica on ecophysiological parameters, especially photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, intrinsic water use efficiency and carboxylation efficiency. However, there were differences between the genotypes concerning the physiological mechanisms leading to biomass increment. In WT plants, inoculation with P. indica stimulated all H+ pumps. However, in inoculated AVP plants, H+-PPase was stimulated, but P- and V-ATPases were inhibited. Fungal inoculation enhanced nutrient uptake in both shoots and roots of WT and AVP plants, compared to uninoculated plants; but among inoculated genotypes, the nutrient uptake was lower in AVP than in WT plants. These results clearly demonstrate that the symbiosis between P. indica and AVP plants did not benefit those plants, which may be related to the inefficient colonization of this fungus on the transgenic plants, demonstrating an incompatibility of this symbiosis, which needs to be further studied.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Prevalência de sintomas osteomusculares em estudantes de odontologia e docentes da Universidade Estadual do Sudoeste da Bahia, campus Jequié

    Os cirurgiões-dentistas são profissionais que vem se destacando entre as profissões da saúde quando se diz respeito aos distúrbios osteomusculares por movimentos repetitivos. Este estudo teve como objetivo identificar a ocorrência destas dores osteomusculares nos docentes e discentes do curso de odontologia da Universidade Estadual do Sudoeste da Bahia (UESB) e comparar estes grupos. O estudo foi realizado utilizando o Questionário Nórdico de Sintomas Osteomusculares (QNSO), onde estão presentes perguntas específicas sobre ergonomia, prevalência e frequência de Dor/Desconforto. A amostra foi composta de 17 docentes e 102 discentes que realizam práticas clínicas no curso de odontologia desta universidade. Os resultados mostram que 82% dos discentes e 71% dos doscentes possuem alguma dor ou desconforto osteomuscular nas diferentes regiões do corpo. Os discentes apresentaram maior prevalência osteomuscular do que os doscentes. Os discentes possuem, também, um maior conhecimento sobre a origem e desenvolvimento da doença, porem não realizam a prevenção. Este trabalho não conseguiu aferir se os discentes estão melhorando ou piorando em relação as dores osteomusculares durante sua formação e posteriormente na carreira profissional. Mas aponta que o conhecimento da ergonomia, mais atividades físicas regulares podem mudar uma situação de dores osteomusculares desfavorável, para uma situação favorável destes profissionais

    Effects of Ibuprofen Use on Lymphocyte Count and Oxidative Stress in Elite Paralympic Powerlifting.

    Background: Paralympic Powerlifting (PP) training tends to promote fatigue and oxidative stress. Objective: To analyze the effects of ibuprofen use on performance and oxidative stress in post-training PP athletes. Methodology: Ten national level PP athletes (age: 27.13 ± 5.57) were analyzed for oxidative stress in post-training. The study was carried out in three weeks, (1) familiarization and (2 and 3) evaluated the recovery with the use of a placebo (PLA) and ibuprofen (IBU), 800 mg. The Peak Torque (PT), Torque Development Rate (TDR), Fatigue Index (FI), reactive substances to thiobarbituric acid (TBARS) and sulfhydryl groups (SH) were evaluated. The training consisted of five sets of five repetitions (80–90%) 1-Repetition Maximum (1-RM) in the bench press. Results: The IBU showed a higher PT (24 and 48 h, p = 0.04, ɳ2 p = 0.39), a lower FI (24 h, p = 0.01, ɳ2p = 0.74) and an increased lymphocyte count (p < 0.001; ɳ2p = 4.36).     The VISCACHA survey - I. Overview and first results

    TheVISCACHA (VIsible Soar photometry of star Clusters in tApii and Coxi HuguA) Survey is an ongoing project based on deep photometric observations of Magellanic Cloud star clusters, collected using the SOuthern Astrophysical Research (SOAR) telescope together with the SOAR Adaptive Module Imager. Since 2015 more than 200 h of telescope time were used to observe about 130 stellar clusters, most of them with low mass (M < 104MΘ) and/or located in the outermost regions of the Large Magellanic Cloud and the Small Magellanic Cloud.With this high-quality data set, we homogeneously determine physical properties from statistical analysis of colour-magnitude diagrams, radial density profiles, luminosity functions, and mass functions. Ages, metallicities, reddening, distances, present-day masses, mass function slopes, and structural parameters for these clusters are derived and used as a proxy to investigate the interplay between the environment in theMagellanic Clouds and the evolution of such systems. In this first paper we present the VISCACHA Survey and its initial results, concerning the SMC clusters AM3, K37, HW20, and NGC 796 and the LMC ones KMHK228, OHSC3, SL576, SL61, and SL897, chosen to compose a representative subset of our cluster sample.
