    The Quiet Ego and Its Predictors in Turkish Culture

    Although high self-esteem has been seen as a panacea for all sorts of personal and social problems for a long time, recent research has shown its potential negative effects. The concept of quiet ego, defined as a balanced integration with others by turning down the volume of the ego (Bauer & Wayment, 2008), has been coined as a plausible alternative that can mitigate negative effects of fragile high self-esteem. This study aims to examine psychometric properties of the Quiet Ego Scale in Turkish culture, and to investigate its correlates related to personality traits, culture, and well-being. A total of 254 Turkish university students completed the measures of the Quiet Ego Scale, Big Five Personality, happiness, self-esteem, and individualism-collectivism. Factor analyses on the items of the Quite Ego measure supported its construct validity among Turkish participants. As expected, quiet ego was positively associated with the indicators of well-being and certain personality traits. Regression analyses indicated that openness to experience among the personality traits and horizontal collectivism among the cultural orientations were the strongest predictors of quiet ego. Today, businesses use information technology to compete and achieve their goals. Industry 4.0 is a new situation that has emerged as informatics, communication, internet, sensors, automation, artificial intelligence, and robotic technologies greatly affect and change production processes. As a result of Industry 4.0, information and automation technologies have caused the supply chain to adapt by digitizing it. On the other hand, with Industry 5.0 studies, it is aimed to reveal great innovations in logistics and supply chain management. In this study, the information and communication technologies used in the logistics and supply chain sector will be examined, Industry 5.0 applications will be discussed, and the current situation of Turkey will be evaluated.</jats:p

    Polypharmacy May Be the Cause of Acute Lithium Intoxication at the Second Day of Treatment

    Lithium is frequently used as a mood stabilizer in patients with mood disorders. Lithium has a narrow therapeutic index and high toxicity. Predisposing factors for intoxication are advanced age, diet disturbances, comorbid medical conditions affecting heart, kidneys or central nervous system and polypharmacy. CASE REPORT: Here we present a case of a 74-year-old woman with a history of Parkinson’s disease, hypertension and bipolar disorder. She was using quetiapine, valsartan with hydrochlorothiazide and levodopa with carbidopa. She presented with altered mental status and muscle rigidity. The patient was admitted with acute lithium intoxication after her second dose of treatment. Blood lithium level increased to 3.58 mEq/L. The woman was hospitalized in the Internal Medicine Intensive Care Unit. With hydration, her symptoms resolved and her lithium level returned to normal after 118 hours. CONCLUSIONS: Prescribing physicians and emergency room physicians should be aware of conditions which may cause a decreased threshold for intoxication

    Association of Plasma Pentraxin-3 Levels with Retinopathy and Systemic Factors in Diabetic Patients

    Background: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is mainly caused by metabolic factors, vascular inflammation, and endothelial dysfunction. We aimed to evaluate the relationship of DR with inflammatory and biochemical alterations in type 2 diabetics. Methods: A total of 89 diabetic patients with retinopathy [(DR (+) (n=30)], without retinopathy [(DR (-) (n=32)], and 27 control subjects were involved in the study. Demographic properties, biochemical values, ophtalmologic evaluation, C-reactive protein (CRP), and pentraxin-3 (PTX-3) levels were recorded. Results: There was significant difference between controls, DR (-) and DR (+) groups with regard to serum PTX-3 levels. Control group had the lowest and DR (+) group revealed the highest PTX-3 levels. Severity of retinopathy was not related with CRP or PTX-3 levels. Duration of diabetes was longer, systolic blood pressure (SBP) and urinary albumin-creatinine ratio (UACR) were significantly higher in DR (+) subjects than DR (-) subjects. Multivariate analysis revealed that PTX-3 level and SBP were the variables that had a significant effect on DR (P=0.002, OR=1.61, and P=0.021, OR=1.06, respectively). Conclusions: Plasma PTX-3 levels may be a valuable predictor of DR-like factors such as duration of diabetes, hypertension, and UACR. Although inflammation has an important role in DR, we think that biomarkers reflecting inflammation is not sufficient to predict development and progression of DR; but follow up with PTX-3 levels along with ophthalmological evaluation may be useful. A single determination may not reflect the variations over time, so repeat measures may provide knowledge if PTX-3 is just a biomarker or has a causal role
