    Hip fracture. Preliminary results supporting significative correlations between the psychological wellbeing of patients and their relative caregivers

    Background and aim. Hip fracture is one of the major causes of loss of self-sufficiency in older patients. The associated caregiving rehabilitation task often falls to the lot of a member of the patient’s family. Our study aims at assessing the relationship between the psychological well-being of patients with hip fracture and their caregivers. Methods. The study was carried-out on 53 elderly patients with hip fracture and their primary caregivers. The Mini Mental State Examination (patient), Activities of Daily Living (patient), Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (patient), Geriatric Depression Scale (patient), Psychological General Well-Being Index (patient/caregiver) and the Caregiver Burden Inventory (caregiver) were administered to each participant. Results. The results revealed significant correlations between stress levels and the psychological well-being of hip-fracture patients and relative caregivers. In particular, the Caregiver Burden Inventory’s total score was negatively related to the patient’s Psychological General Well-Being Index score (p < 0.05) and with Anxiety (p < 0.05), Depressed Mood (p < 0.01), Positive Well-being (p < 0.05) and General Health (p < 0.05) subscale scores, as well as with the patient’s Activities of Daily Living (p < 0.05) score. Patients’ Psychological General Well-Being Index scores were related to the caregivers’ General Health subscale (p < 0.01), and negatively related to Caregiver Burden Inventory Time Dependence (p < 0.05) and Social Burden (p < 0.05) subscales, as well as with the Geriatric Depression Scale score (p < 0.05). Conclusion. A mutual relationship seems to exist between a patient’s psychological well-being and his/her caregiver’s burden. These findings highlight the importance of a bio-psychosocial approach to both patients and caregivers

    Chrome-spinel geochemistry of the northern Oman-United Arab Emirates ophiolite

    The Oman ophiolite is the largest and best preserved ophiolite in the world and records a switch from mid-ocean ridge (MOR) to supra-subduction zone (SSZ) setting. This study investigates the geochemical variability of chrome-spinel in the mantle sequence of the poorly known United Arab Emirates (U.A.E.) part of the northern Oman-U.A.E. ophiolite. Extensive field work was carried out and 260 samples collected for petrogenetic studies and geochemical mapping of the U.A.E. mantle. Chrome-spinel geochemistry provides valuable information on bom the residual mantle and on the nature and extent of melt-rock reaction. In particular, it is used to fingerprint the compositions of the magmas that interacted with the mantle lithosphere. This study also develops a new method to analyse gallium in chrome-spinel by Laser Ablation-ICP-MS, and successfully uses it to improve the tectonic discrimination of chrome-spinel. The results show that the U.A.E. mantle lithosphere formed at a MOR-type setting and was modified by melt-rock reaction with MORB-type and SSZ-type melts. This history of melt infiltration strongly resembles the magmatic history of the crustal sequence in each of the Aswad and Khawr Fakkan Blocks. Geochemical mapping illustrates a strong spatial control on the pattern of melt infiltration in the mantle and constrains the proximity of each mantle domain with respect to the subduction zone. The Khawr Fakkan mantle extensively interacted with boninitic melts during subduction initiation. Thus, it was closer to the subduction zone than the Aswad mantle which predominantly interacted with island-arc tholeiite melts. Importantly, this work demonstrates for the first time that the Dibba Zone peridotites originate from pre-existing 'true' MOR mantle lithosphere between the trench and the main body of the ophiolite. A further important conclusion is that the mantle lithosphere of the northern Oman-U.A.E. ophiolite was not the source region for the SSZ magmatism. Previous workers proposed that the plane of detachment and the subduction zone were the same, which implies that the mantle of the ophiolite was the source of the SSZ magmatism. Instead, this study proposes that detachment of the ophiolite took place at a shallower level than the plane of the subduction zone and thus provides strong evidence for a subduction zone at a still deeper level. During detachment, the ophiolite incorporated slices of ultramafic rock near the trench (i.e. the Dibba Zone peridotites) as it bulldozed its way over the underlying plate and onto the continental margin of Arabia.EThOS - Electronic Theses Online ServiceGBUnited Kingdo

    Aerobic training and angiogenesis activation in patients with stable chronic heart failure: a preliminary report.

    The pathophysiology of chronic heart failure (CHF) involves multiple hystologic and molecular alterations. To determine the effects of physical training on circulating endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs), angiogenesis (angiogenin, angiopoietin-1 and -2, VEGF, Tie-2, SDF-1α) and inflammation (IL-6, CRP), we compared data obtained from 11 CHF pts before and after 3 months aerobic exercise training, to those from 10 non trained CHF pts (CHF-C group, age 64 + 2 years, NYHA 2). At the end of the study, EPCs count and AP-2 serum levels significantly increased in the CHF-TR group. These preliminary data suggest a significant effect of even a short program of physical training on angiogenic activation and endothelial dysfunction

    Karyological and flow cytometric evidence of triploid specimens in Bufo viridis (Amphibia Anura)

    Karyological and flow cytometric (FCM) analyses were performed on a group of 14 green toads of the Bufo viridis species from seven Eurasian populations. Both approaches gave concordant results concerning the DNA ploidy level. All the populations examined were represented exclusively by diploid or tetraploid specimens, except one, where triploids were found. Results evidenced an interpopulation variability in DNA content against the same ploidy level, as well as an unusually high number of triploids in a particular reproductive place. The origin of polyploidy and the presence and persistence of a high number of triploids in a particular population are discussed

    Retromer stabilization results in neuroprotection in a model of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis

    Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal disease characterized by the degeneration of upper and lower motor neurons (MNs). We find a significant reduction of the retromer complex subunit VPS35 in iPSCs-derived MNs from ALS patients, in MNs from ALS post mortem explants and in MNs from SOD1G93A mice. Being the retromer involved in trafficking of hydrolases, a pathological hallmark in ALS, we design, synthesize and characterize an array of retromer stabilizers based on bis-guanylhydrazones connected by a 1,3-phenyl ring linker. We select compound 2a as a potent and bioavailable interactor of VPS35-VPS29. Indeed, while increasing retromer stability in ALS mice, compound 2a attenuates locomotion impairment and increases MNs survival. Moreover, compound 2a increases VPS35 in iPSCs-derived MNs and shows brain bioavailability. Our results clearly suggest the retromer as a valuable druggable target in ALS

    The variable finesse locking technique

    Virgo is a power recycled Michelson interferometer, with 3 km long Fabry-Perot cavities in the arms. The locking of the interferometer has been obtained with an original lock acquisition technique. The main idea is to lock the instrument away from its working point. Lock is obtained by misaligning the power recycling mirror and detuning the Michelson from the dark fringe. In this way, a good fraction of light escapes through the antisymmetric port and the power build-up inside the recycling cavity is extremely low. The benefit is that all the degrees of freedom are controlled when they are almost decoupled, and the linewidth of the recycling cavity is large. The interferometer is then adiabatically brought on to the dark fringe. This technique is referred to as variable finesse, since the recycling cavity is considered as a variable finesse Fabry-Perot. This technique has been widely tested and allows us to reach the dark fringe in few minutes, in an essentially deterministic way

    Multicenter external validation of the liverpool uveal melanoma prognosticator online: An OOG collaborative study

    Uveal melanoma (UM) is fatal in ~50% of patients as a result of disseminated disease. This study aims to externally validate the Liverpool Uveal Melanoma Prognosticator Online V3 (LUMPO3) to determine its reliability in predicting survival after treatment for choroidal melanoma when utilizing external data from other ocular oncology centers. Anonymized data of 1836 UM patients from seven international ocular oncology centers were analyzed with LUMPO3 to predict the 10-year survival for each patient in each external dataset. The analysts were masked to the patient outcomes. Model predictions were sent to an independent statistician to evaluate LUMPO3’s performance using discrimination and calibration methods. LUMPO3’s ability to discriminate between UM patients who died of metastatic UM and those who were still alive was fair-to-good, with C-statistics ranging from 0.64 to 0.85 at year 1. The pooled estimate for all external centers was 0.72 (95% confidence interval: 0.68 to 0.75). Agreement between observed and predicted survival probabilities was generally good given differences in case mix and survival rates between different centers. Despite the differences between the international cohorts of patients with primary UM, LUMPO3 is a valuable tool for predicting all-cause mortality in this disease when using data from external centers
