    Do ADHD-impulsivity and BMI have shared polygenic and neural correlates?

    There is an extensive body of literature linking ADHD to overweight and obesity. Research indicates that impulsivity features of ADHD account for a degree of this overlap. The neural and polygenic correlates of this association have not been thoroughly examined. In participants of the IMAGEN study, we found that impulsivity symptoms and body mass index (BMI) were associated (r = 0.10, n = 874, p = 0.014 FWE corrected), as were their respective polygenic risk scores (PRS) (r = 0.17, n = 874, p = 6.5 × 10-6 FWE corrected). We then examined whether the phenotypes of impulsivity and BMI, and the PRS scores of ADHD and BMI, shared common associations with whole-brain grey matter and the Monetary Incentive Delay fMRI task, which associates with reward-related impulsivity. A sparse partial least squared analysis (sPLS) revealed a shared neural substrate that associated with both the phenotypes and PRS scores. In a last step, we conducted a bias corrected bootstrapped mediation analysis with the neural substrate score from the sPLS as the mediator. The ADHD PRS associated with impulsivity symptoms (b = 0.006, 90% CIs = 0.001, 0.019) and BMI (b = 0.009, 90% CIs = 0.001, 0.025) via the neuroimaging substrate. The BMI PRS associated with BMI (b = 0.014, 95% CIs = 0.003, 0.033) and impulsivity symptoms (b = 0.009, 90% CIs = 0.001, 0.025) via the neuroimaging substrate. A common neural substrate may (in part) underpin shared genetic liability for ADHD and BMI and the manifestation of their (observable) phenotypic association

    The Effects of Rosuvastatin on the Serum Cortisol, Serum Lipid, and Serum Mevalonic Acid Levels in the Healthy Indian Male Population

    In this open-label, balanced, randomized, placebo-controlled, parallel study, healthy male volunteers were randomly divided into two groups. Each group received either a single oral dose of rosuvastatin 20 mg or placebo. Estimations were done at predose on day 1 of dosing (baseline) and 24 h postdose after days 7 and 14. Serum cortisol and serum lipid levels were estimated using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kits and serum mevalonic acid (MVA) levels were measured using validated liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry method. Rosuvastatin produced a statistically significant (P < 0.05) decrease in total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, very low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglycerides. However, the increase in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and decrease in cortisol and MVA were not statistically significant when compared to the placebo-treated group. The study showed that rosuvastatin at a dose of 20 mg/day for a period of 14 days was very potent as cholesterol-lowering agent, without any significant change in serum cortisol level in the healthy Indian male population

    The 2007 winner of the International Award for Entrepreneurship and Small Business Research is the Diana Project team (Candida Brush, Nancy Carter, Elizabeth Gatewood, Patricia Greene and Myra Hart). The Diana Project builds on the vast experience of the team in the field of entrepreneurship in general and women entrepreneurship, business growth and venture capital in particular. The Diana Project has investigated the supply and demand side of growth capital for women entrepreneurs. The research contributes to entrepreneurship theory as well as to practice, filling a void in knowledge on growth-oriented women entrepreneurship. In this article we present and discuss the research contribution of the Diana Project, in the areas of entrepreneurship, women entrepreneurship and venture capital. We specifically discuss the value of researching a specific group of women entrepreneurs, those who want to grow their businesses, that very clearly demonstrates the positive potential of female entrepreneurship. The Diana Project has also moved research on women's entrepreneurship forward since its framework does not treat women entrepreneurs as 'other,' i.e., the project does not presuppose that women's entrepreneurship is similar to or different from men's entrepreneurship. It assumes that women's entrepreneurship is entrepreneurship and studies it from that point of view

    Signatures of T cells as correlates of immunity to Francisella tularensis

    Tularemia or vaccination with the live vaccine strain (LVS) of Francisella tularensis confers long-lived cell-mediated immunity. We hypothesized that this immunity depends on polyfunctional memory T cells, i.e., CD4(+) and/or CD8(+) T cells with the capability to simultaneously express several functional markers. Multiparametric flow cytometry, measurement of secreted cytokines, and analysis of lymphocyte proliferation were used to characterize in vitro recall responses of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) to killed F. tularensis antigens from the LVS or Schu S4 strains. PBMC responses were compared between individuals who had contracted tularemia, had been vaccinated, or had not been exposed to F. tularensis (naive). Significant differences were detected between either of the immune donor groups and naive individuals for secreted levels of IL-5, IL-6, IL-10, IL-12, IL-13, IFN-gamma, MCP-1, and MIP-1 beta. Expression of IFN-gamma, MIP-1 beta, and CD107a by CD4(+)CD45RO(+) or CD8(+) CD45RO(+) T cells correlated to antigen concentrations. In particular, IFN-gamma and MIP-1 beta strongly discriminated between immune and naive individuals. Only one cytokine, IL-6, discriminated between the two groups of immune individuals. Notably, IL-2- or TNF-alpha-secretion was low. Our results identify functional signatures of T cells that may serve as correlates of immunity and protection against F. tularensis
