Open charm production in relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions
We calculate excitation functions for open charm mesons in reactions
from AGS to RHIC energies within the HSD transport approach which is based on
string, quark, diquark () and hadronic degrees
of freedom. The open charm cross sections from and reactions are
fitted to results from PYTHIA and scaled in magnitude to the available
experimental data. From our dynamical calculations we find an approximate
-scaling for pions, kaons, -mesons and -- when discarding
final state elastic scattering of kaons and -mesons with pions -- in
central collisions of at 160 AGeV (with an apparent slope of
176 MeV) without employing the assumption of a Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP). We
demonstrate that this result is essentially due to a relative -scaling in
collisions at 17.3 GeV. At lower bombarding energies of
25 AGeV a suppression of -mesons by a factor of 10 relative to
a global -scaling with slope 143 MeV is expected. However, when
incorporating attractive -meson self energies as suggested by QCD sum rules,
an approximate -scaling is regained even at 25 AGeV. The effects of
-meson rescattering and charmonium absorption are discussed, furthermore,
with respect to rapidity and transverse mass distributions in central
collisions of at 25, 160 AGeV and 21.3 ATeV.Comment: 46 pages, LaTeX, including 19 postscript figures, to be published in

Production and absorption of pairs in nuclear collisions at SPS energies
We study the production of pairs and dimuons from hard collisions
in nuclear reactions within the covariant transport approach HSD, which
describes successfully both hadronic and electromagnetic observables from p+A
and A+A collisions from SIS to SPS energies. The production of and
Drell-Yan pairs is treated perturbatively employing experimental cross sections
while the interactions of pairs with hadrons are included by
conventional cascade-type two-body collisions. Adopting 6mb for the -baryon cross sections the data on suppression in p+A
reactions are reproduced in line with calculations based on the Glauber model.
We study different models for dissociation on mesons in comparison
with the experimental data of the HELIOS-3, NA38 and NA50 collaborations.
Adopting absorption cross sections with mesons above the threshold
in the order of 1.5 - 3mb we find that all data on suppression from
both proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions can be described without
assuming the formation of a quark-gluon plasma in these collisions.Comment: 27 pages, LaTeX, including 13 postscript figures, to appear in Nucl.

Improved Measurement of the Asymmetry in the Nucleon Sea
Measurements of the ratio of Drell-Yan yields from an 800 \rm{GeV/c} proton
beam incident on liquid hydrogen and deuterium targets are reported.
Approximately 360,000 Drell-Yan muon pairs remained after all cuts on the data.
From these data, the ratio of anti-down () to anti-up ()
quark distributions in the proton sea is determined over a wide range in
Bjorken-. These results confirm previous measurements by E866 and extend
them to lower . From these data, and
are evaluated for . These results are
compared with parameterizations of various parton distribution functions,
models and experimental results from NA51, NMC, and HERMES.Comment: 17 pages, 15 figure
