Open charm production in relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions

We calculate excitation functions for open charm mesons in Au+AuAu+Au reactions from AGS to RHIC energies within the HSD transport approach which is based on string, quark, diquark (q,qˉ,qq,qˉqˉq, \bar{q}, qq, \bar{q}\bar{q}) and hadronic degrees of freedom. The open charm cross sections from pNpN and πN\pi N reactions are fitted to results from PYTHIA and scaled in magnitude to the available experimental data. From our dynamical calculations we find an approximate mTm_T-scaling for pions, kaons, DD-mesons and J/ΨJ/\Psi -- when discarding final state elastic scattering of kaons and ϕ\phi-mesons with pions -- in central collisions of Au+AuAu + Au at 160 A\cdotGeV (with an apparent slope of 176 MeV) without employing the assumption of a Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP). We demonstrate that this result is essentially due to a relative mTm_T-scaling in pppp collisions at s\sqrt{s} \approx 17.3 GeV. At lower bombarding energies of 25 A\cdotGeV a suppression of DD-mesons by a factor of \sim 10 relative to a global mTm_T-scaling with slope 143 MeV is expected. However, when incorporating attractive DD-meson self energies as suggested by QCD sum rules, an approximate mTm_T-scaling is regained even at 25 A\cdotGeV. The effects of DD-meson rescattering and charmonium absorption are discussed, furthermore, with respect to rapidity and transverse mass distributions in central collisions of Au+AuAu + Au at 25, 160 A\cdotGeV and 21.3 A\cdotTeV.Comment: 46 pages, LaTeX, including 19 postscript figures, to be published in Nucl. Production and absorption of ccˉc \bar{c} pairs in nuclear collisions at SPS energies

We study the production of ccˉc \bar{c} pairs and dimuons from hard collisions in nuclear reactions within the covariant transport approach HSD, which describes successfully both hadronic and electromagnetic observables from p+A and A+A collisions from SIS to SPS energies. The production of ccˉc \bar{c} and Drell-Yan pairs is treated perturbatively employing experimental cross sections while the interactions of ccˉc\bar{c} pairs with hadrons are included by conventional cascade-type two-body collisions. Adopting 6mb for the ccˉc \bar{c}-baryon cross sections the data on J/ΨJ/\Psi suppression in p+A reactions are reproduced in line with calculations based on the Glauber model. We study different models for ccˉc \bar{c} dissociation on mesons in comparison with the experimental data of the HELIOS-3, NA38 and NA50 collaborations. Adopting absorption cross sections with mesons above the DDˉD\bar{D} threshold in the order of 1.5 - 3mb we find that all data on J/ΨJ/\Psi suppression from both proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions can be described without assuming the formation of a quark-gluon plasma in these collisions.Comment: 27 pages, LaTeX, including 13 postscript figures, to appear in Nucl. Improved Measurement of the dˉ/uˉ\bar d / \bar u Asymmetry in the Nucleon Sea

Measurements of the ratio of Drell-Yan yields from an 800 \rm{GeV/c} proton beam incident on liquid hydrogen and deuterium targets are reported. Approximately 360,000 Drell-Yan muon pairs remained after all cuts on the data. From these data, the ratio of anti-down (dˉ\bar{d}) to anti-up (uˉ\bar{u}) quark distributions in the proton sea is determined over a wide range in Bjorken-xx. These results confirm previous measurements by E866 and extend them to lower xx. From these data, (dˉuˉ)(\bar{d}-\bar{u}) and (dˉuˉ)dx\int(\bar{d}-\bar{u})dx are evaluated for 0.015<x<0.350.015<x<0.35. These results are compared with parameterizations of various parton distribution functions, models and experimental results from NA51, NMC, and HERMES.Comment: 17 pages, 15 figure
