Emerging Discourse Incubator: The Roles of Institutional Complexity and Hybridity in Social Impact Supply Chain Management
Supply chain research and practice has moved beyond green or environmental issues to include social issues. But much of the focus still remains on attempts of large companies to reduce social harm along their supply chains rather than creating social good. At the same time, research investigating the role of NGOs in supply chains or humanitarian logistics often emphasizes temporary initiatives and overlooks long term viability. This conceptual paper seeks to expand the playing field by looking at how social enterprises manage their supply chains to generate social benefit while maintaining or improving their financial viability in the long term. Our contribution is to consider those socially motivated organizations that lie on the continuum between purely social and purely commercial enterprises. We consider how these organizations manage their supply chains for social impact and define this area as social impact supply chain management (SISCM). In this work, we view these organizations and managerial issues through the lens of institutional complexity, that is, the presence of multiple and possibly conflicting institutional logics in the focal organization. We propose that, for these organizations, supply chain strategy, stakeholder identification and engagement, and relationship management might differentiate SISCM from traditional supply chain management. And as a result, we offer future research directions that might add clarity to effective SISCM
impact of coccidiosis control program and feeding plan on white striping prevalence and severity degree on broiler breast fillets evaluated at three growing ages
Abstract This study investigated the impact of 2 coccidiosis control systems (vaccine vs anticoccidial) and 2 feeding plans (standard energy vs low energy content, the latter supplemented with threonine and enzymes in the second half of the production cycle) on white striping (WS) prevalence and severity in chicken broiler breasts at commercial slaughter age (51 d). The age of lesion onset was also investigated with the sacrifice of 80 chicks at 12, and 80 chicks at 25 d of age. Seven hundred and twenty ROSS 708 strain male chicks were divided into 4 groups: a non-vaccinated group fed with standard diet (CONTROL); two groups vaccinated against coccidiosis but fed either a standard diet (VACC) or a low-energy diet supplemented with threonine and enzymes (VACC–LE plus); and a fourth group fed a standard diet containing anticoccidial additive except during the finishing period (COX). After live performance, yields, and fillet pH were measured, the breasts were weighed and scored as level 0 (no WS), level 1 (moderate WS), and level 2 (severe WS) at each of the 3 ages; data were covariate for slaughter weight. The results suggest an ameliorative effect of coccidiosis control systems when compared to the control group in terms of live weight, breast yield, and whole breast weight, with heavier fillets characterized by higher pH values. WS appeared at 25 d of age with an average prevalence of 11.5% and with lesions of moderate severity. There were no statistically significant differences due to the experimental treatment at this age. At commercial slaughter age, total average prevalence was 96%, with COX birds showing higher level 2 prevalence (77.6%). This could be related to the higher slaughter weight reached by the COX group (
Design and Tests of the Silicon Sensors for the ZEUS Micro Vertex Detector
To fully exploit the HERA-II upgrade,the ZEUS experiment has installed a
Micro Vertex Detector (MVD) using n-type, single-sided, silicon micro-strip
sensors with capacitive charge division. The sensors have a readout pitch of
120 micrometers, with five intermediate strips (20 micrometer strip pitch). The
designs of the silicon sensors and of the test structures used to verify the
technological parameters, are presented. Results on the electrical measurements
are discussed. A total of 1123 sensors with three different geometries have
been produced by Hamamatsu Photonics K.K. Irradiation tests with reactor
neutrons and Co-60 photons have been performed for a small sample of sensors.
The results on neutron irradiation (with a fluence of 1 x 10^{13} 1 MeV
equivalent neutrons / cm^2) are well described by empirical formulae for bulk
damage. The Co-60 photons (with doses up to 2.9 kGy) show the presence of
generation currents in the SiO_2-Si interface, a large shift of the flatband

Tuning the Interlayer Distance of Graphene Oxide as a Function of the Oxidation Degree for o-Toluidine Removal
Graphene oxide (GO) with different oxidation degrees is prepared by a modified Hummers' method varying KMnO4 amount from 0.5 to 6.0 g. X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), micro-Raman, thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray photoeelectron spectroscopy, Boehm titrations, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and, finally, positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) are exploited to assess the properties of GO. Results show that increasing oxidant species can tune the interlayer gap between GO sheets up to a maximum value in the case of 4.0 g KMnO4 content. Moreover, these results validate the two-component-based model of GO in which, at low oxidation degree, there are unsplit/isolated graphene planes, instead at higher oxidant amounts, a five-layer sandwiched configuration occurs comprising graphene planes having functional groups decorating the edges (bwGO), hydrated oxidative debris (OD) and "empty" spaces (revealed by PALS as the distance between (bwGO + OD) two-component layers). In addition, by XRPD analysis, the total gap between two sheets is easily computed. In order to correlate these findings to pollutant removal capability, planar o-toluidine adsorption is studied. Since this molecule diffuses in an aqueous environment, the obtained adsorption percentages are compared to the thickness of the hydrated OD grafted onto bwGO. A strict connection between the pollutant removal efficacy and the variation of the hydrated interlayer distance is found

In complicated cases, it is unknown whether inflammation is predictive of disease severity, as in adults. Moreover, cardiac involvement is anecdotally described. We report the case of a 2-month-old infant with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection presenting with fever, tachycardia and elevated interleukin-6, who was diagnosed with myocarditis and treated with immunoglobulins

THE CONTROLLED DRIFT DETECTOR : CHARACTERISATION OF THE READOUT MECHANISM AND OF THE CHARGE HANDLING CAPABILITY.
A new position-sensing X-ray detector operated in integrate-readout mode has been recently designed and characterized. Due to the peculiar working principle of the new detector, the charge handling capability, that is the maximum charge that can be stored in a pixel, is related to the operating conditions of the device. In particular the amplitude of the barriers that confine the signal electrons during the integration phase depends on the applied drift field and on the field perturbation superposed to it. A detailed experimental characterization of the charge handling capability as a function of these parameters has been carried out
Preliminary study of kaonic deuterium X-rays by the SIDDHARTA experiment at DAFNE
The study of the KbarN system at very low energies plays a key role for the
understanding of the strong interaction between hadrons in the strangeness
sector. At the DAFNE electron-positron collider of Laboratori Nazionali di
Frascati we studied kaonic atoms with Z=1 and Z=2, taking advantage of the
low-energy charged kaons from Phi-mesons decaying nearly at rest. The SIDDHARTA
experiment used X-ray spectroscopy of the kaonic atoms to determine the
transition yields and the strong interaction induced shift and width of the
lowest experimentally accessible level (1s for H and D and 2p for He). Shift
and width are connected to the real and imaginary part of the scattering
length. To disentangle the isospin dependent scattering lengths of the
antikaon-nucleon interaction, measurements of Kp and of Kd are needed. We
report here on an exploratory deuterium measurement, from which a limit for the
yield of the K-series transitions was derived: Y(K_tot)<0.0143 and
Y(K_alpha)<0.0039 (CL 90%). Also, the upcoming SIDDHARTA-2 kaonic deuterium
