Removable sets for holomorphic functions of several complex variables
We show that every closed subset of CN that has finite (2N-2) dimensional measure is a removable set for holomorphic functions, and we obtain a related result on the ball
Study of aircraft in intraurban transportation systems, volume 1
An analysis of an effective short range, high density computer transportation system for intraurban systems is presented. The seven county Detroit, Michigan, metropolitan area, was chosen as the scenario for the analysis. The study consisted of an analysis and forecast of the Detroit market through 1985, a parametric analysis of appropriate short haul aircraft concepts and associated ground systems, and a preliminary overall economic analysis of a simplified total system designed to evaluate the candidate vehicles and select the most promising VTOL and STOL aircraft. Data are also included on the impact of advanced technology on the system, the sensitivity of mission performance to changes in aircraft characteristics and system operations, and identification of key problem areas that may be improved by additional research. The approach, logic, and computer models used are adaptable to other intraurban or interurban areas
Extremal discs and the holomorphic extension from convex hypersurfaces
Let D be a convex domain with smooth boundary in complex space and let f be a
continuous function on the boundary of D. Suppose that f holomorphically
extends to the extremal discs tangent to a convex subdomain of D. We prove that
f holomorphically extends to D. The result partially answers a conjecture by

Accretion-Induced Lithium Line Enhancements in Classical T Tauri Stars: RW Aur
It is widely accepted that much of the stochastic variability of T Tauri
stars is due to accretion by a circumstellar disk. The emission line spectrum
as well as the excess continuum emission are common probes of this process. In
this communication, we present additional probes of the circumstellar
environment in the form of resonance lines of low ionization potential
elements. Using a set of 14 high resolution echelle observations of the
classical T Tauri star (CTTS), RW Aur, taken between 1986 and 1996, we
carefully measure the continuum veiling at each epoch by comparing more than
500 absorption lines with those of an appropriate template. This allows us to
accurately subtract out the continuum emission and to recover the underlying
photospheric spectrum. In doing so, we find that selected photospheric lines
are enhanced by the accretion process, namely the resonance lines of LiI and
KI. A resonance line of TiI and a low excitation potential line of CaI also
show weak enhancements. Simple slab models and computed line bisectors lead us
to propose that these line enhancements are markers of cool gas at the
beginning of the accretion flow which provides an additional source of line
opacity. These results suggest that published values of surface lithium
abundances of classical T Tauri stars are likely to be overestimated. This
would account for the various reports of surface lithium abundances in excess
of meteoritic values among the extreme CTTS. Computing LTE lithium abundances
of RW Aur in a low and then high accretion state yields abundances which vary
by one order of magnitude. The low accretion state lithium abundance is
consistent with theoretical predictions for a star of this age and mass while
the high accretion state spectrum yields a super-meteoritic lithium abundance.Comment: 28 pages, 8 figures, accepted by Ap
System engineering toolbox for design-oriented engineers
This system engineering toolbox is designed to provide tools and methodologies to the design-oriented systems engineer. A tool is defined as a set of procedures to accomplish a specific function. A methodology is defined as a collection of tools, rules, and postulates to accomplish a purpose. For each concept addressed in the toolbox, the following information is provided: (1) description, (2) application, (3) procedures, (4) examples, if practical, (5) advantages, (6) limitations, and (7) bibliography and/or references. The scope of the document includes concept development tools, system safety and reliability tools, design-related analytical tools, graphical data interpretation tools, a brief description of common statistical tools and methodologies, so-called total quality management tools, and trend analysis tools. Both relationship to project phase and primary functional usage of the tools are also delineated. The toolbox also includes a case study for illustrative purposes. Fifty-five tools are delineated in the text
Scapular Performance in Women with Breast Cancer Compared to Healthy Controls
The Scapular Flip Test is designed to recognize abnormal scapular position defined by winging/tipping of the scapula on resisted external rotation. Originally created to detect scapular dysfunction with spinal accessory nerve damage, the Scapular Flip Test may be a simple screening tool for any scapular dysfunction that results from breast cancer surgery and treatment to the shoulder and axillary region.https://ecommons.udayton.edu/dpt_symposium/1020/thumbnail.jp
Real-Time Coral Stress Observations Before, During, and After Beach Nourishment Dredging Offshore SE Florida
Beach nourishment in Southeast Florida involves dredging sand source borrow areas located between offshore reefs. From May 2005 to February 2006 Broward County, FL. nourished 10.9 km of beach with 1.5 ×106 m3 of sand. As part of a program to monitor potential reef community impacts, a visual stress index was developed from laboratory experiments and histological analyses for three stony coral species (Montastrea cavernosa, Solenastrea bournoni, and Siderastrea siderea). Scoring involved healthy = 0; moderately stressed = 1 (polyp swelling, increased mucus); markedly stressed = 2 (coloration changes, increased mucus secretion, tissue thinning); and severely stressed = 3 (severe swelling/thinning tissue erosion/necrosis). Colonies were scored weekly at sites adjacent to borrow areas and control sites pre-, during, and post-dredging. Permit conditions were established which would suspend dredging based on mean stress index values above 1.5 at 50% of monitored sites adjacent to borrow areas. This condition was never met. However, three hurricanes, passing the region during dredging, contributed to an elevated mean stress level above 1.0. Post-dredging observations documented recovery to pre-dredging stress levels. This program was effectively used to monitor stress on a sensitive marine habitat adjacent to sediment dredging activities
The Control, Development and Utilization of the Missouri River and its Tributaries
The speakers at this conference were Professors Condra, Caldwell, Stout, Phillips, Bengtson, and Gov. George L. Sheldon, with Dean Charles E. Bessey presiding. The principal object of the meeting was to make known reliable information in regard to the Missouri river, concerning which there is widespread interest and in some instances a tendency to magnify the future possibilities of the river. This paper is an account of the conference. It gives some of the thoughts that were emphasized at the symposium, reciting the facts as they were given by those who have investigated the respective phases of the theme.

Effects of resistance training on classic and specific bioelectrical impedance vector analysis in elderly women
Raw bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) data [resistance (R); reactance (Xc)] through bioelectrical impedance vector analysis (BIVA) and phase angle (PhA) have been used to evaluate cellular function and hydration status. The purpose of this investigation was to examine the effects of resistance training (RT) on classic and specific BIVA in elderly women. Twenty women (mean ± SD; age: 71.9 ± 6.9 years; BMI: 24.5 ± 3.0 kg m(-2)) completed a 6-month RT program. Whole-body, single-frequency BIA, body geometry, and leg strength (5RM) measures were completed at baseline (t0), 3 months (t3), and 6 months (t6). The mean impedance vector displacements were compared using Hotelling's T(2) test to evaluate changes in R and Xc relative to height (R/ht; Xc/ht) or body volume (Rsp; Xcsp) estimated from the arms, legs, and trunk. 5RM, PhA, and BIVA variables were compared using ANOVA. PhA improved at t6 (p < 0.01), while 5RM improved at t3 and t6 (p < 0.01). Using classic BIVA, 6 months (T(2) = 31.6; p < 0.01), but not 3 months of RT (T(2) = 4.5; p = 0.20), resulted in significant vector migration. Using specific BIVA, 6 months (T(2) = 24.4; p < 0.01), but not 3 months of RT (T(2) = 5.5; p = 0.10), also resulted in significant vector migration. 5RM was correlated to both PhA (r = 0.48-56) and Xcsp (r = 0.45-53) at all time points. Vector displacements were likely the result of improved cellular integrity (Xcsp) and cellular health (PhA)
