On paraquaternionic submersions between paraquaternionic K\"ahler manifolds
In this paper we deal with some properties of a class of semi-Riemannian
submersions between manifolds endowed with paraquaternionic structures, proving
a result of non-existence of paraquaternionic submersions between
paraquaternionic K\"ahler non locally hyper paraK\"ahler manifolds. Then we
examine, as an example, the canonical projection of the tangent bundle, endowed

Petrophysical properties in the Iberian Range and surrounding areas (NE Spain): 1-density
We introduce the first map of density data in Northeastern Spain which can help in the interpretation of gravimetric surveying. The background map is a simplified version of the Geode continuous geological cartography (scale 1:200.000) of the Iberian Range and Ebro basin. These maps are synthetic and homogeneous maps based on previous 1:50, 000 scale geological maps (MAGNA). The map uses the ETRS89 datum and UTM coordinates (30T northern zone) and covers an area of 140, 000 sq km. The compiled data shown in the map come from previous papers of the region (˜ 700 points) as well as from more than 800 additional points developed in the course of an exploratory project focused on the underground characterization of a potential CO2 reservoir in the so-called ‘Linking Zone''. The new data accomplish some basic criteria; they are accurately georeferenced and lithology, stratigraphic age and other technical details about the measurements (e.g. means and error) and methods are fully displayed
In Utero p,p′-DDE Exposure and Infant Neurodevelopment: A Perinatal Cohort in Mexico
BACKGROUND: Evidence suggests that p,p′-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethene (DDE) affects neurodevelopment in infants, although a critical exposure window has not yet been identified. OBJECTIVES: Our goal was to assess the prenatal DDE exposure window and its effect on the psychomotor development index (PDI) and mental development index (MDI) during the first year of life. METHODS: We recruited 244 children whose pregnancies and deliveries were uncomplicated, and whose mothers were monitored throughout the pregnancy. Participating mothers were not occupationally exposed to DDT (dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane) but were residents of a zone in Mexico with endemic malaria. We measured serum levels of DDE before pregnancy and during each trimester of the pregnancy. We evaluated PDI and MDI of the Bayley Scales for Infant Development (BSID-II), at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months of age. We adjusted for quality of the home environment and maternal intellectual coefficient (IQ). We used generalized mixed-effects models for statistical analysis. RESULTS: Third-trimester DDE level (7.8 ± 2.8 ppb) was significantly higher than the level at baseline, first, and second trimesters, but the differences never exceeded 20%. Only DDE levels during the first trimester of pregnancy were associated with a significant reduction in PDI (every doubled increase of DDE level reduced the PDI 0.5 points). DDE was not associated with MDI. CONCLUSIONS: A critical window of exposure to DDE in utero may be the first trimester of the pregnancy, and psychomotor development is a target of this compound. Residues of DDT metabolites may present a risk of developmental delay for years after termination of DDT use
Cryptic population structure reveals low dispersal in Iberian wolves
Abstract Highly mobile mammalian carnivores are expected to have the capability to maintain high levels of gene flow across large geographic scales. Nonetheless, surprising levels of genetic structure have been found in many such populations. We combined genetic and spatial behavioural information from wolves (Canis lupus) in the Iberian Peninsula (Western Europe) during the last two decades to present a particular case of low dispersal levels in a large carnivore population persisting in human-dominated landscapes. We found an exceptionally reticulated pattern of cryptic population structure emerging at two hierarchical levels, in which four or eleven meaningful genetic clusters can be recognized, respectively. These clusters were characterized by moderate-high levels of differentiation (average pairwise FST = 0.09–0.19), low levels of admixture and varying degrees of genetic diversity. The number of dispersers identified among the 11 clusters was very low (<4% out of 218 wolves). Spatial information of tracked wolves further confirmed the geographical genetic patterns (only 2 out of 85 collared wolves overlapped with more than one genetic cluster). The high levels of genetic structure in this population may be determined by the recent demographic history of this population, among other factors. The identification of meaningful genetic clusters has implications for the delineation of conservation units and, consequently, on the conservation and management actions for Iberian wolves
YSOVAR: Six pre-main-sequence eclipsing binaries in the Orion Nebula Cluster
Eclipsing binaries (EBs) provide critical laboratories for empirically
testing predictions of theoretical models of stellar structure and evolution.
Pre-main-sequence (PMS) EBs are particularly valuable, both due to their rarity
and the highly dynamic nature of PMS evolution, such that a dense grid of PMS
EBs is required to properly calibrate theoretical PMS models. Analyzing
multi-epoch, multi-color light curves for 2400 candidateOrion Nebula Cluster
(ONC) members from our Warm Spitzer Exploration Science Program YSOVAR, we have
identified 12 stars whose light curves show eclipse features. Four of these 12
EBs are previously known. Supplementing our light curves with follow-up optical
and near-infrared spectroscopy, we establish two of the candidates as likely
field EBs lying behind the ONC. We confirm the remaining six candidate systems,
however, as newly identified ONC PMS EBs. These systems increase the number of
known PMS EBs by over 50% and include the highest mass (Theta1 Ori E, for which
we provide a complete set of well-determined parameters including component
masses of 2.807 and 2.797 solar masses) and longest period (ISOY
J053505.71-052354.1, P \sim 20 days) PMS EBs currently known. In two cases
(Theta1 Ori E and ISOY J053526.88-044730.7), enough photometric and
spectroscopic data exist to attempt an orbit solution and derive the system
parameters. For the remaining systems, we combine our data with literature
information to provide a preliminary characterization sufficient to guide
follow-up investigations of these rare, benchmark systems.Comment: Accepted by Ap
Real-world effectiveness of caplacizumab vs the standard of care in immune thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura
Immune thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (iTTP) is a thrombotic microangiopathy caused by anti-ADAMTS13 antibodies. Caplacizumab is approved for adults with an acute episode of iTTP in conjunction with plasma exchange (PEX) and immunosuppression. The objective of this study was to analyze and compare the safety and efficacy of caplacizumab vs the standard of care and assess the effect of the concomitant use of rituximab. A retrospective study from the Spanish TTP Registry of patients treated with caplacizumab vs those who did not receive it was conducted. A total of 155 patients with iTTP (77 caplacizumab, 78 no caplacizumab) were included. Patients initially treated with caplacizumab had fewer exacerbations (4.5% vs 20.5%; P <.05) and less refractoriness (4.5% vs 14.1%; P <.05) than those who were not treated. Time to clinical response was shorter when caplacizumab was used as initial treatment vs caplacizumab used after refractoriness or exacerbation. The multivariate analysis showed that its use in the first 3 days after PEX was associated with a lower number of PEX (odds ratio, 7.5; CI, 2.3-12.7; P <.05) and days of hospitalization (odds ratio, 11.2; CI, 5.6-16.9; P <.001) compared with standard therapy. There was no difference in time to clinical remission in patients treated with caplacizumab compared with the use of rituximab. No severe adverse event was described in the caplacizumab group. In summary, caplacizumab reduced exacerbations and refractoriness compared with standard of care regimens. When administered within the first 3 days after PEX, it also provided a faster clinical response, reducing hospitalization time and the need for PEX
Incidentalomas during imaging for primary hyperparathyroidism—incidence and clinical outcomes
Background: Imaging for pre-operative localisation of parathyroid glands in primary hyperparathyroidism is now
routine. This has led to the detection of incidental lesions (incidentalomas) in other organs, the nature of which is
not well characterised.
The aim of this study was to determine the incidence, characteristics and outcomes in patients who had incidental
findings on parathyroid imaging.
Methods: Records of patients who underwent imaging for primary hyperparathyroidism over 2 years were reviewed
to identify incidental lesions detected on parathyroid imaging. Patients with persistent or renal hyperparathyroidism
were excluded. Details on the management of detected incidentalomas were obtained from patient records.
Results: Incidentalomas were identified in 17 of 170 patients (10 %) undergoing parathyroid imaging. Incidentalomas
included thyroid (n = 11), breast (n = 3), lateral compartment of the neck (n = 1), lung (n = 1) and clavicle (n = 1). However,
no disease of clinical significance needing treatment was detected on further investigation.
Conclusions: Although a significant proportion of patients undergoing parathyroid imaging had incidental lesions
detected, these seem to be of little clinical significance. The morbidity and cost of further interventions on these
incidentalomas need to be weighed against the benefits of routine imaging in improving outcomes of first-time
surgery in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism.

Effects of Enriched Physical and Social Environments on Motor Performance, Associative Learning, and Hippocampal Neurogenesis in Mice
We have studied the motor abilities and associative learning capabilities of adult mice placed in different enriched environments. Three-month-old animals were maintained for a month alone (AL), alone in a physically enriched environment (PHY), and, finally, in groups in the absence (SO) or presence (SOPHY) of an enriched environment. The animals' capabilities were subsequently checked in the rotarod test, and for classical and instrumental learning. The PHY and SOPHY groups presented better performances in the rotarod test and in the acquisition of the instrumental learning task. In contrast, no significant differences between groups were observed for classical eyeblink conditioning. The four groups presented similar increases in the strength of field EPSPs (fEPSPs) evoked at the hippocampal CA3-CA1 synapse across classical conditioning sessions, with no significant differences between groups. These trained animals were pulse-injected with bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) to determine hippocampal neurogenesis. No significant differences were found in the number of NeuN/BrdU double-labeled neurons. We repeated the same BrdU study in one-month-old mice raised for an additional month in the above-mentioned four different environments. These animals were not submitted to rotarod or conditioned tests. Non-trained PHY and SOPHY groups presented more neurogenesis than the other two groups. Thus, neurogenesis seems to be related to physical enrichment at early ages, but not to learning acquisition in adult mice
The stellar and sub-stellar IMF of simple and composite populations
The current knowledge on the stellar IMF is documented. It appears to become
top-heavy when the star-formation rate density surpasses about 0.1Msun/(yr
pc^3) on a pc scale and it may become increasingly bottom-heavy with increasing
metallicity and in increasingly massive early-type galaxies. It declines quite
steeply below about 0.07Msun with brown dwarfs (BDs) and very low mass stars
having their own IMF. The most massive star of mass mmax formed in an embedded
cluster with stellar mass Mecl correlates strongly with Mecl being a result of
gravitation-driven but resource-limited growth and fragmentation induced
starvation. There is no convincing evidence whatsoever that massive stars do
form in isolation. Various methods of discretising a stellar population are
introduced: optimal sampling leads to a mass distribution that perfectly
represents the exact form of the desired IMF and the mmax-to-Mecl relation,
while random sampling results in statistical variations of the shape of the
IMF. The observed mmax-to-Mecl correlation and the small spread of IMF
power-law indices together suggest that optimally sampling the IMF may be the
more realistic description of star formation than random sampling from a
universal IMF with a constant upper mass limit. Composite populations on galaxy
scales, which are formed from many pc scale star formation events, need to be
described by the integrated galactic IMF. This IGIMF varies systematically from
top-light to top-heavy in dependence of galaxy type and star formation rate,
