    The combination of atmospheric plasma and chemical treatments for antibacterial finish on cotton

    The aim of this study was to investigate the incorporation of triclosan based chemical into cyclodextrin based commercial product, bonded onto cotton fabric with and without plasma modification. The treated samples were characterized by SEM analysis. The antibacterial activities of the washed and unwashed samples were evaluated according to the AATCC Test Method 147-1998 and some physical properties were also investigated. It was observed that after the combination process of triclosan, cyclodextrin and atmospheric plasma modification, cotton fabric was able to retain its antibacterial activity up to the 5 washing cycles at 60°C

    Background Antipsychotics are increasingly used among women of childbearing age and during pregnancy. Objective To determine whether children exposed to antipsychotics in utero are at increased risk of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), accounting for maternal diagnoses of bipolar, psychotic and other psychiatric disorders. Design Population-based cohort study, including a sibling analysis. Setting Nationwide data on all pregnant women and their live-born singletons in Denmark (1997-2017), Finland (1996-2016), Iceland (2004-2017), Norway (2004-2017), and Sweden (2006-2016). Participants 4 324 086 children were eligible for inclusion to the study cohort. Intervention Antipsychotic exposure in utero, assessed by pregnancy trimester, type of antipsychotic, and varying patterns of use. Main outcome measures Non-mutually exclusive diagnoses of ADHD and ASD. We used Cox proportional hazard models to calculate hazard ratios (HRs) controlling for maternal psychiatric disorders and other potential confounding factors. Findings Among 4 324 086 singleton births, 15 466 (0.4%) were exposed to antipsychotics in utero. During a median follow-up of 10 years, we identified 72 257 children with ADHD and 38 674 children with ASD. Unadjusted HRs were raised for both outcomes but shifted substantially towards the null after adjustment; 1.10 (95%CI 1.00 to 1.27) for ADHD and 1.12 (0.97 to 1.29) for ASD. Adjusted HRs remained consistent by trimester of exposure and type of antipsychotic. Comparing in utero exposure with pre-pregnancy use yielded HRs of 0.74 (0.62 to 0.87) for ADHD and 0.88 (0.70 to 1.10) for ASD. Sibling analyses yielded HRs of 1.14 (0.79 to 1.64) for ADHD and 1.34 (0.75 to 2.39) for ASD. Discussion Our findings suggest little or no increased risk of child ADHD or ASD after in utero exposure to antipsychotics. Clinical implications Results regarding child neurodevelopment are reassuring for women who need antipsychotics during pregnancy.publishedVersio

    Autosomal-dominant hypotrichosis with woolly hair : novel gene locus on chromosome 4q35.1-q35.2

    Hypotrichosis simplex (HS) with and without woolly hair (WH) comprises a group of rare, monogenic disorders of hair loss. Patients present with a diffuse loss of scalp and/or body hair, which usually begins in early childhood and progresses into adulthood. Some of the patients also show hair that is tightly curled. Approximately 10 genes for autosomal recessive and autosomal dominant forms of HS have been identified in the last decade, among them five genes for the dominant form. We collected blood and buccal samples from 17 individuals of a large British family with HS and WH. After having sequenced all known dominant genes for HS in this family without the identification of any disease causing mutation, we performed a genome-wide scan, using the HumanLinkage-24 BeadChip, followed by a classical linkage analysis; and whole exome-sequencing (WES). Evidence for linkage was found for a region on chromosome 4q35.1-q35.2 with a maximum LOD score of 3.61. WES led to the identification of a mutation in the gene SORBS2, encoding sorbin and SH3 domain containing 2. Unfortunately, we could not find an additional mutation in any other patient/family with HS; and in cell culture, we could not observe any difference between cloned wildtype and mutant SORBS2 using western blotting and immunofluorescence analyses. Therefore, at present, SORBS2 cannot be considered a definite disease gene for this phenotype. However, the locus on chromosome 4q is a robust and novel finding for hypotrichosis with woolly hair. Further fine mapping and sequencing efforts are therefore warranted in order to confirm SORBS2 as a plausible HS disease gene

    Cold pressed versus refined winterized corn oils: Quality, composition and aroma

    The aims of this study were to characterize and compare cold pressed and fully refined winterized corn oils. Free fatty acidity (FFA), peroxide (PV) and p-anisidin (p-AV) values, saponification number, total carotenoid and phenolic contents of cold pressed corn oils were higher than that of the refined winterized corn oils. Linoleic and oleic acids (approximately 53-54% and 30-31%, respectively) were detected as the major fatty acids in both oil samples. Fifteen different sterols with a majority of ?-sitosterol, campesterol, and stigmasterol were quantified in both oil samples. Although phenolic compounds were not quantified in the refined winterized oil samples, some flavonoids (hesperidin, rutin) and phenolic acids (gallic, syringic, rosmaniric and trans-ferulic) were detected in the cold pressed oil samples. This study concludes that cold pressed corn oils could be superior in terms of bioactive compounds but still need some quality improvements for sensory attributes. © 2017 CSIC

    Occupational accidents and affecting factors of metal industry in a factory in Ankara

    <p><strong>Abstract </strong></p> <p><strong>Objective</strong>:According to the statistics of the Social Security Institution, 18672 occupational accidents occurred in the metal industry in 2008 in Turkey. Whereas 78 of these accidents resulted in death, 252 people became permanently incapable of working. In 2008, 369677 working days were lost as a result of occupational accidents. Evaluating<strong> </strong>the reasons for and the results of accidents in the metal industry and contributing to the development of recommendations for prevention in accordance with the information obtained. <strong>Method:</strong> The study was conducted with 201 of 210 workers working in heavy metal manufacturing and construction in the building company between April 2008 and June 2008. <strong>Results:</strong> The frequency of occupational accidents among the metal workers was 22% between January 2007 and June 2008. The reasons for the workers’ accidents are listed as; insufficient use of personal protective equipment (44%), carelessness (37%), and personal reasons, not to be taken of security measures at machines and looms/ unsuitable machines (both 17%).<strong>Conclusion:</strong> The study demonstrates that the accidents mostly occur because of failure to use of personal protective equipment, insufficient vocational training.</p> <p><strong>Key Words</strong>: Occupational, accident, metal industry, prevention</p><p><strong>Ankara’da bir metal sanayi fabrikasında iş kazaları ve etkileyen faktörler</strong></p> <p><strong>Özet</strong></p> <p><strong>Amaç:</strong> 2008 yılında Sosyal Güvenlik Kurumu’nun verilerine göre metal sanayisinde 18672 iş kazası meydana gelmiş ve 369677 işgünü kaybı olmuştur.  Bu kazalardan 78 tanesi ölümle sonuçlanırken, 252 kişi kalıcı olarak işgöremez hale gelmiştir. Metal sanayisinde meydana gelen kazaların sebep ve sonuçlarını inceleyerek, elde edilen bilgiler doğrultusunda kazaların önlenmesine yönelik tavsiyelerin geliştirilmesi amaçlanmıştır. <strong>Yöntem:</strong> Araştırma, Ankara’da faaliyet gösteren ağır metal imalat, konstrüksiyon ve inşaat sanayi şirketinde 2008 Nisan-2008 Haziran döneminde çalışan 210 işçinin 201’ine anket uygulanmasıyla yürütülmüştür. <strong>Bulgular:</strong> Ocak 2007 ve Haziran 2008 tarihleri arasında metal işçilerinin iş kazası sıklığı %22 bulunmuştur. İş kazalarının nedenleri olarak yetersiz kişsel koruyucu ekipman kullanımı (%44), dikkatsizlik (%37), kişisel nedenler (%17) ile makine ve tezgahlarda güvenlik önlemlerinin alınmaması/makinelerin uygun olmaması (%17) belirtilmiştir. <strong>Sonuç:</strong> Çalışma, iş kazalarının çoğunlukla kişisel koruyucu ekipmanın kullanımındaki eksiklikten ve yetersiz mesleki eğitimden kaynaklandığını ortaya koymuştur.</p> <p><strong>Anahtar Kelimeler:</strong> İş, kaza, metal sanayi, önleme</p><p> </p
