    To explore or to exploit? Learning humans' behaviour to maximize interactions with them

    Assume a robot operating in a public space (e.g., a library, a museum) and serving visitors as a companion, a guide or an information stand. To do that, the robot has to interact with humans, which presumes that it actively searches for humans in order to interact with them. This paper addresses the problem how to plan robot's actions in order to maximize the number of such interactions in the case human behavior is not known in advance. We formulate this problem as the exploration/exploitation problem and design several strategies for the robot. The main contribution of the paper than lies in evaluation and comparison of the designed strategies on two datasets. The evaluation shows interesting properties of the strategies, which are discussed

    Coexistence and Criticality in Size-Asymmetric Hard-Core Electrolytes

    Liquid-vapor coexistence curves and critical parameters for hard-core 1:1 electrolyte models with diameter ratios lambda = sigma_{-}/\sigma_{+}=1 to 5.7 have been studied by fine-discretization Monte Carlo methods. Normalizing via the length scale sigma_{+-}=(sigma_{+} + sigma_{-})/2 relevant for the low densities in question, both Tc* (=kB Tc sigma_{+-}/q^2 and rhoc* (= rhoc sigma _{+-}^{3}) decrease rapidly (from ~ 0.05 to 0.03 and 0.08 to 0.04, respectively) as lambda increases. These trends, which unequivocally contradict current theories, are closely mirrored by results for tightly tethered dipolar dimers (with Tc* lower by ~ 0-11% and rhoc* greater by 37-12%).Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

    Evidence of strong antiferromagnetic coupling between localized and itinerant electrons in ferromagnetic Sr2FeMoO6

    Magnetic dc susceptibility (χ\chi) and electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements in the paramagnetic regime, are presented. We found a Curie-Weiss (CW) behavior for χ\chi(T) with a ferromagnetic Θ=446(5)\Theta = 446(5) K and μeff=4.72(9)μB/f.u.\mu_{eff} = 4.72(9) \mu_{B}/f.u., this being lower than that expected for either Fe3+(5.9μB)Fe^{3+}(5.9\mu_{B}) or Fe2+(4.9μB)Fe^{2+}(4.9\mu_{B}) ions. The ESR g-factor g=2.01(2)g = 2.01(2), is associated with Fe3+Fe^{3+}. We obtained an excellent description of the experiments in terms of two interacting sublattices: the localized Fe3+Fe^{3+} (3d53d^{5}) cores and the delocalized electrons. The coupled equations were solved in a mean-field approximation, assuming for the itinerant electrons a bare susceptibility independent on TT. We obtained χe0=3.7\chi_{e}^{0} = 3.7 10−410^{-4} emu/mol. We show that the reduction of μeff\mu_{eff} for Fe3+Fe^{3+} arises from the strong antiferromagnetic (AFM) interaction between the two sublattices. At variance with classical ferrimagnets, we found that Θ\Theta is ferromagnetic. Within the same model, we show that the ESR spectrum can be described by Bloch-Hasegawa type equations. Bottleneck is evidenced by the absence of a gg-shift. Surprisingly, as observed in CMR manganites, no narrowing effects of the ESR linewidth is detected in spite of the presence of the strong magnetic coupling. These results provide evidence that the magnetic order in Sr2FeMoO6Sr_{2}FeMoO_{6} does not originates in superexchange interactions, but from a novel mechanism recently proposed for double perovskites

    Decoupling Criticality and Importance in Mixed-Criticality Scheduling

    Research on mixed-criticality scheduling has flourished since Vestal’s seminal 2007 paper, but more efforts are needed in order to make these results more suitable for industrial adoption and robust and versatile enough to influence the evolution of future certification standards in keeping up with the times. With this in mind, we introduce a more refined task model, in line with the fundamental principles of Vestal’s mode-based adaptive mixed-criticality model, which allows a task’s criticality and its importance to be specified independently from each other. A task’s importance is the criterion that determines its presence in different system modes. Meanwhile, the task’s criticality (reflected in its Safety Integrity Level (SIL) and defining the rules for its software development process), prescribes the degree of conservativeness for the task’s estimated WCET during schedulability testing. We indicate how such a task model can help resolve some of the perceived weaknesses of the Vestal model, in terms of how it is interpreted, and demonstrate how the existing scheduling tests for the classic variant’s of Vestal’s model can be mapped to the new task model essentially without changes.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Energy efficiency considerations in integrated IT and optical network resilient infrastructures

    The European Integrated Project GEYSERS - Generalised Architecture for Dynamic Infrastructure Services - is concentrating on infrastructures incorporating integrated optical network and IT resources in support of the Future Internet with special emphasis on cloud computing. More specifically GEYSERS proposes the concept of Virtual Infrastructures over one or more interconnected Physical Infrastructures comprising both network and IT resources. Taking into consideration the energy consumption levels associated with the ICT today and the expansion of the Internet in size and complexity, that incurring increased energy consumption of both IT and network resources, energy efficient infrastructure design becomes critical. To address this need, in the framework of GEYSERS, we propose energy efficient design of infrastructures incorporating integrated optical network and IT resources, supporting resilient end-to-end services. Our modeling results quantify significant energy savings of the proposed solution by jointly optimizing the allocation of both network and IT resources

    The periodic Anderson model from the atomic limit and FeSi

    The exact Green's functions of the periodic Anderson model for U→∞U\to \infty are formally expressed within the cumulant expansion in terms of an effective cumulant. Here we resort to a calculation in which this quantity is approximated by the value it takes for the exactly soluble atomic limit of the same model. In the Kondo region a spectral density is obtained that shows near the Fermi surface a structure with the properties of the Kondo peak. Approximate expressions are obtained for the static conductivity % \sigma (T) and magnetic susceptibility χ(T)\chi (T) of the PAM, and they are employed to fit the experimental values of FeSi, a compound that behaves like a Kondo insulator with both quantities vanishing rapidly for T→0T\to 0. Assuming that the system is in the intermediate valence region, it was possible to find good agreement between theory and experiment for these two properties by employing the same set of parameters. It is shown that in the present model the hybridization is responsible for the relaxation mechanism of the conduction electrons.Comment: 26 pages and 8 figure

    Crystal Field and Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya Interaction in orbitally ordered La_{0.95}Sr_{0.05}MnO_3: An ESR Study

    We present a comprehensive analysis of Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction and crystal-field parameters using the angular dependence of the paramagnetic resonance shift and linewidth in single crystals of La_{0.95}Sr_{0.05}MnO_3 within the orthorhombic Jahn-Teller distorted phase. The Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction (~ 1K) results from the tilting of the MnO_6 octahedra against each other. The crystal-field parameters D and E are found to be of comparable magnitude (~ 1K) with D ~= -E. This indicates a strong mixing of the |3z^2-r^2> and |x^2-y^2> states for the real orbital configuration.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figure

    The Orbital Order Parameter in La0.95Sr0.05MnO3 probed by Electron Spin Resonance

    The temperature dependence of the electron-spin resonance linewidth in La0.95Sr0.05MnO3 has been determined and analyzed in the paramagnetic regime across the orbital ordering transition. From the temperature dependence and the anisotropy of linewidth and gg-value the orbital order can be unambiguously determined via the mixing angle of the wave functions of the ege_{\rm g}-doublet. The linewidth shows a similar evolution with temperature as resonant x-ray scattering results
