Repeated Evolution of Digital Adhesion in Geckos: A Reply to Harrington and Reeder
We published a phylogenetic comparative analysis that found geckos had gained and lost adhesive toepads multiple times over their long evolutionary history (Gamble et al., PLoS One, 7, 2012, e39429). This was consistent with decades of morphological studies showing geckos had evolved adhesive toepads on multiple occasions and that the morphology of geckos with ancestrally padless digits can be distinguished from secondarily padless forms. Recently, Harrington & Reeder (J. Evol. Biol., 30, 2017, 313) reanalysed data from Gamble et al. (PLoS One, 7, 2012, e39429) and found little support for the multiple origins hypothesis. Here, we argue that Harrington and Reeder failed to take morphological evidence into account when devising ancestral state reconstruction models and that these biologically unrealistic models led to erroneous conclusions about the evolution of adhesive toepads in geckos
Coming to America: Multiple Origins of New World Geckos
Geckos in the Western Hemisphere provide an excellent model to study faunal assembly at a continental scale. We generated a time-calibrated phylogeny, including exemplars of all New World gecko genera, to produce a biogeographic scenario for the New World geckos. Patterns of New World gecko origins are consistent with almost every biogeographic scenario utilized by a terrestrial vertebrate with different New World lineages showing evidence of vicariance, dispersal via temporary land bridge, overseas dispersal, or anthropogenic introductions. We also recovered a strong relationship between clade age and species diversity, with older New World lineages having more species than more recently arrived lineages. Our data provide the first phylogenetic hypothesis for all New World geckos and highlight the intricate origins and ongoing organization of continental faunas. The phylogenetic and biogeographical hypotheses presented here provide an historical framework to further pursue research on the diversification and assembly of the New World herpetofauna
Mars Rover Sample Return: A sample collection and analysis strategy for exobiology
For reasons defined elsewhere it is reasonable to search for biological signatures, both chemical and morphological, of extinct life on Mars. Life on Earth requries the presence of liquid water, therefore, it is important to explore sites on Mars where standing bodies of water may have once existed. Outcrops of layered deposits within the Valles Marineris appear to be ancient lake beds. Because the outcrops are well exposed, relatively shallow core samples would be very informative. The most important biological signature to detect would be organics, microfossils, or larger stromato-like structures, although the presence of cherts, carbonates, clays, and shales would be significant. In spite of the limitations of current robotics and pattern recognition, and the limitations of rover power, computation, Earth communication bandwidth, and time delays, a partial scenario was developed to implement such a scientific investigation. The rover instrumentation and the procedures and decisions and IR spectrometer are described in detail. Preliminary results from a collaborative effort are described, which indicate the rover will be able to autonomously detect stratification, and hence will ease the interpretation burden and lead to greater scientific productivity during the rover's lifetime

Trichinae Certification in the United States Pork Industry
We report here on progress in the Trichinae Certification pilot program. This program uses an on-farm auditing system to document good production practices (GPPs) for swine relative to the risk of exposure to Trichinella spiralis. The pilot phase of this program continues while regulations to establish it as an official USDA program are being developed. Launch of the Trichinae Certification Program in the United States is expected to take place when regulations are finalized within the next year. Tunable singlet-triplet splitting in a few-electron Si/SiGe quantum dot
We measure the excited-state spectrum of a Si/SiGe quantum dot as a function
of in-plane magnetic field, and we identify the spin of the lowest three
eigenstates in an effective two-electron regime. The singlet-triplet splitting
is an essential parameter describing spin qubits, and we extract this splitting
from the data. We find it to be tunable by lateral displacement of the dot,
which is realized by changing two gate voltages on opposite sides of the
device. We present calculations showing the data are consistent with a spectrum
in which the first excited state of the dot is a valley-orbit state.Comment: 4 pages with 3 figure
Chronology and function of a new circular mammoth bone structure from Kostenki 11

The final version is available from Cambridge University Press via the DOI in this record.We report on assemblages of charcoal, burnt bone and microlithic debitage retrieved by flotation from a new circular mammoth bone feature discovered at Kostenki 11-Ia, Russian Federation, the first time a mammoth bone circle has ever been systematically sampled in this way. New radiocarbon dates are used to provide the first coherent chronology for the site, revealing it as one of the oldest such features on the Russian Plain and confirming occupation of this region during Greenland Stadial 3 at the onset of the last glacial maximum. Implications for human activity within and around the mammoth bone feature are discussed.Leverhulme Trus
Transport through an impurity tunnel coupled to a Si/SiGe quantum dot
Achieving controllable coupling of dopants in silicon is crucial for
operating donor-based qubit devices, but it is difficult because of the small
size of donor-bound electron wavefunctions. Here we report the characterization
of a quantum dot coupled to a localized electronic state, and we present
evidence of controllable coupling between the quantum dot and the localized
state. A set of measurements of transport through this device enable the
determination of the most likely location of the localized state, consistent
with an electronically active impurity in the quantum well near the edge of the
quantum dot. The experiments we report are consistent with a gate-voltage
controllable tunnel coupling, which is an important building block for hybrid
donor and gate-defined quantum dot devices.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
