Evaluating GAIA performances on eclipsing binaries. III. Orbits and stellar parameters for UW LMi, V432 Aur and CN Lyn

The orbits and physical parameters of three detached F and G-type eclipsing binaries have been derived combining Hipparcos H(P) photometry with 8480-8740 Ang ground-based spectroscopy, simulating the photometric+spectroscopic observations that the GAIA mission will obtain. Tycho B(T) and V(T) light curves are too noisy to be modeled for the three targets, and only mean Tycho colors are retained to constrain the temperature. No previous combined photometric+spectroscopic solution exists in literature for any of the three targets. Quite remarkably, CN Lyn turned out to be an equal masses F5 triple system. Distances from the orbital solutions agree within the astrometric error with the Hipparcos parallaxes.Comment: A&A, accepted in pres

    Get PDF

SN 2013df, a double-peaked IIb supernova from a compact progenitor and an extended H envelope

Optical observations of the type IIb SN 2013df from a few days to about 250 days after explosion are presented. These observations are complemented with UV photometry taken by \textit{SWIFT} up to 60 days post-explosion. The double-peak optical light curve is similar to those of SNe 1993J and 2011fu although with different decline and rise rates. From the modelling of the bolometric light curve, we have estimated that the total mass of synthesised 56^{56}Ni in the explosion is 0.1\sim0.1 M_{\odot}, while the ejecta mass is 0.81.40.8-1.4 M_{\odot} and the explosion energy 0.41.2×10510.4-1.2 \times 10^{51}erg. In addition, we have estimated a lower limit to the progenitor radius ranging from 6416964-169 RR_{\odot}. The spectral evolution indicates that SN 2013df had a hydrogen envelope similar to SN 1993J (0.2\sim 0.2 M_{\odot}). The line profiles in nebular spectra suggest that the explosion was asymmetric with the presence of clumps in the ejecta, while the [O\,{\sc i}] λ\lambdaλ\lambda63006300, 63646364 luminosities, may indicate that the progenitor of SN 2013df was a relatively low mass star ( 1213\sim 12-13 M_{\odot}).Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures, 9 tables, accepted for publication in MNRA

Development of non evaporable getter pumps for large hydrogen throughput and capacity in high vacuum regimes

    Get PDF
In vacuum technology, capture pumps based on Non Evaporable Getters are commonly applied to ultra-high vacuum systems. Recent improvements in the absorption of hydrogenic species, with the introduction of Zr–V–Ti–Al alloys (ZAO®), make them an appealing and viable solution for the application in fusion research, and in particular for the vacuum system of neutral beam injectors (hydrogen pumping speed of thousands of m3/s, pressure of tens of mPa). This paper describes the characterization of the new NEG material in pumps of increasing dimensions, including the development, construction and test of a large mockup pump of modular design, to demonstrate the scalability of the technology. Effective pumping speeds of the order of 14 m3/s or higher at a concentration of 130 Pa m3/kg were achieved by the mockup pump, for an installed getter mass of about 16 kg, and a stability within 10% up to 1300 Pa m3/kg The measured effective pumping speed per unit area of sintered disks is of the order of 3.5 m/s, corresponding to 4.9 m/s at the disk surfaces as derived from numerical simulations. General guidelines for the design of large NEG pumps for hydrogen are discussed, including thermal aspects and duty cycle of the pump

Evaluating GAIA performances on eclipsing binaries. II. Orbits and stellar parameters for V781 Tau, UV Leo and GK Dra

The orbits and physical parameters of three close, double-lined G0 eclipsing binaries have been derived combining H_P, V_T, B_T photometry from the Hipparcos/Tycho mission with 8480-8740 \AA ground-based spectroscopy. The setup is mimicking the photometric and spectroscopic observations that should be obtained by GAIA. The binaries considered here are all of G0 spectral type, but each with its own complications: V781 Tau is an overcontact system with components of unequal temperature, UV Leo shows occasional surface spots and GK Dra contains a delta-Scuti variable. Such peculiarities will be common among binaries to be discovered by GAIA. We find that the values of masses, radii and temperatures for such stars can be derived with a 1-2% accuracy using the adopted GAIA-like observing mode.Comment: accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics, contains 5 Tables and 3 Figures; correction of an important typ
