    Prevalence and distribution of adhesins and the expression of fibronectin-binding protein (FnbA and FnbB) among Staphylococcus aureus isolates from Shahrekord Hospitals

    OBJECTIVE: One of the most important causes of nosocomial infections is Staphylococcus aureus. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of these genes and the rate of expression of these genes during nasal colonization among the personnel of Kashani and Hajar hospitals. RESULTS: In this Analytical-descriptive study, 240 nasal swab specimens were collected from personnel of different departments of Kashani and Hajar hospitals in Shahr-e-kord. Nasal specimens were cultured and 110 Staphylococcus strains were isolated. Based on the results, 110 carriers of Staphylococcus aureus were identified. The frequency of clfA, clfB, fnbA and fnbB genes were 36.3%, 86.3%, 7.2% and 43.6% respectively. It was also observed that the fnbA gene showed no expression, but of 95 clfB-positive samples, 73 isolates (76.8%) were expressed clfB gene. This study showed that the abundance of these genes varies in nasal colonization. It was also observed that clfB gene with a high frequency and high expression rate has an important role in nose colonization. These results not only provide insight into the factors involved in S. aureus colonization but also provide potential therapeutic target

    epatitis C virus (HCV) is one of the leading causes of chronic liver disease, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma, resulting in major global public health concerns. The HCV infection is unevenly distributed worldwide, with variations in prevalence across and within countries. The studies on molecular epidemiology conducted in several countries provide an essential supplement for a comprehensive knowledge of HCV epidemiology, genotypes, and subtypes, along with providing information on the impact of current and earlier migratory flows. HCV is phylogenetically classified into 8 major genotypes and 57 subtypes. HCV genotype and subtype distribution differ according to geographic origin and transmission risk category. Unless people with HCV infection are detected and treated appropriately, the number of deaths due to the disease will continue to increase. In 2015, 1.75 million new viral infections were mostly due to unsafe healthcare procedures and drug use injections. In the same year, access to direct-acting antivirals was challenging and varied in developing and developed countries, affecting HCV cure rates based on their availability. The World Health Assembly, in 2016, approved a global strategy to achieve the elimination of the HCV public health threat by 2030 (by reducing new infections by 90% and deaths by 65%). Globally, countries are implementing policies and measures to eliminate HCV risk based on their distribution of genotypes and prevalence

    International comparisons of behavioral and emotional problems in preschool children: parents’ reports from 24 societies

    International comparisons were conducted of preschool children’s behavioral and emotional problems as reported on the Child Behavior Checklist for Ages 1½–5 by parents in 24 societies (N¼19,850). Item ratings were aggregated into scores on syndromes; Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders–oriented scales; a Stress Problems scale; and Internalizing, Externalizing, and Total Problems scales. Effect sizes for scale score differences among the 24 societies ranged from small to medium (3–12%). Although societies differed greatly in language, culture, and other characteristics, Total Problems scores for 18 of the 24 societies were within 7.1 points of the omnicultural mean of 33.3 (on a scale of 0–198). Gender and age differences, as well as gender and age interactions with society, were all very small (effect sizes<1%). Across all pairs of societies, correlations between mean item ratings averaged .78, and correlations between internal consistency alphas for the scales averaged .92, indicating that the rank orders of mean item ratings and internal consistencies of scales were very similar across diverse societies

    In Albania, olive trees are attacked by various pests, included mites, which are mostly represented by eriophid mites (Acari: Eriophyoidea). Among the eriophyoids associated with olive trees, Aceria oleae (Nalepa), Ditrymacus athiasella Keifer and Tegolophus hassani (Keifer) are the most common species in the Vlora region and A. oleae was always predominant. These three species show a preference for the local variety 'Kalinjot' and caused the same type of injury on leaves, flowers and fruits.     : Existing data indicate an association between vitamin D deficiency and increased severity of respiratory distress due to COVID-19 infection, especially in high-risk populations. To date, the effect of vitamin D on immunogenicity to SARS-CoV-2 vaccines has been investigated solely in young healthcare workers in a few studies, yielding conflicting findings, yet highlighting that the response to immunization is inversely related to age. Vitamin D status can potentially influence the antibody titers in people with a previous (or naïve) SARS-CoV-2 infection and vaccination, given its role in immune regulatory functions. From this standpoint, vitamin D supplementation can help reduce the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection, COVID-19 severity/mortality and rebalance immunological function, particularly in subjects with vigorous T lymphocyte responses to COVID-19. However, more research is needed to establish a correlation between vitamin D status and the generation of protective serological responses to SARS-CoV-2 vaccination

    Introduction: Artificial intelligence (AI) in gastrointestinal endoscopy includes systems designed to interpret medical images and increase sensitivity during examination. This may be a promising solution to human biases and may provide support during diagnostic endoscopy. Areas covered: This review aims to summarize and evaluate data supporting AI technologies in lower endoscopy, addressing their effectiveness, limitations, and future perspectives. Expert opinion: Computer-aided detection (CADe) systems have been studied with promising results, allowing for an increase in adenoma detection rate (ADR), adenoma per colonoscopy (APC), and a reduction in adenoma miss rate (AMR). This may lead to an increase in the sensitivity of endoscopic examinations and a reduction in the risk of interval-colorectal cancer. In addition, computer-aided characterization (CADx) has also been implemented, aiming to distinguish adenomatous and non-adenomatous lesions through real‐time assessment using advanced endoscopic imaging techniques. Moreover, computer-aided quality (CADq) systems have been developed with the aim of standardizing quality measures in colonoscopy (e.g. withdrawal time and adequacy of bowel cleansing) both to improve the quality of examinations and set a reference standard for randomized controlled trials

    Antibacterial activity and mechanism of action of chitosan nanofibers against toxigenic Clostridioides (Clostridium) difficile Isolates

    Background. Clostridioides difficile a Gram-positive, obliged anaerobic, rod-shaped spore-former bacterium, causes a wide spectrum of diseases, ranging from mild, self-limiting diarrhoea to serious diarrhea. Chitosan, a natural polysaccharide, is largely known for its activity against a wide range of microorganisms. Chitosan, in the form of nanofibrils (nanofibrilated chitosan), consists of separated fibers which can be suspended easily in aqueous media. Study design. This paper, for the first time, aims to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of chitosan nanofibers against C. difficile isolates. Methods. Chitosan nanofibers were characterized through scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. Minimum inhibitory concentration and minimum bactericidal concentration of chitosan nanofibers against toxigenic C. difficile isolates (with resistance gene: ermB, tetM and tetW) was determined by the standard broth microdilution method. Results. The Miniumum Inhibitory Concentration of chitosan nanofibers for two toxigenic isolates with resistance genes ermB, tetM and tetW, two toxigenic isolates ermB+ tetM+ and the standard strain ATCC 700057 was similar and equal to 0.25 mg/mL. The minimum bactericidal concentration for all isolates was 0.5 mg/mL. Conclusions. The results demonstrated that chitosan nanofibers exhibit potent antimicrobial activities against multiple toxigenic C. difficile isolates, and the antibacterial effect of chitosan nanofibers against C. difficile isolates with ermB, tetM and tetW resistance genes indicates that interfering with the synthesis of proteins is not the mechanism of action of chitosan nanofibers

    Grief Experience After Deaths: Comparison of Covid-19 and non-Covid-19 Causes

    The grief caused by loved ones� death causes grief is a global phenomenon. The Covid-19 pandemic caused significant changes in human lifestyles and the experience of grief. The purpose of the present study was to compare grief experiences in the deceased's relatives caused by Covid-19 and non-Covid-19. Seventy-five first- and second-degree relatives of the deceased infected with Covid-19 (n = 33) and non-Covid-19 (n = 42) in a Gorgan hospital in northern Iran were included cross-sectional study using convenience sampling. Data were collected using the GEQ-34 grief experience questionnaire and demographic variables and questions related to funeral and burial. The results revealed that the deceased's burial quality caused by the Covid-19 group was significantly lower (p = 0.035). However, the feeling of the Covid-19 label is significantly higher (p 0.05). Nevertheless, the experience of grief was significantly different in the group of relatives of the deceased infected by Covid-19 in terms of notoriety (P = 0.040) and physical reactions (p = 0.002). Educational interventions to reduce stigma and discrimination due to death caused by Covid-19 and clinical and psychological support of relatives of the deceased due to Covid-19 are recommended by compiling appropriate messages from different channels. © The Author(s) 2022
