    Written sentence context effects on acoustic-phonetic perception: fMRI reveals cross-modal semantic-perceptual interactions

    Available online 3 October 2019.This study examines cross-modality effects of a semantically-biased written sentence context on the perception of an acoustically-ambiguous word target identifying neural areas sensitive to interactions between sentential bias and phonetic ambiguity. Of interest is whether the locus or nature of the interactions resembles those previously demonstrated for auditory-only effects. FMRI results show significant interaction effects in right mid-middle temporal gyrus (RmMTG) and bilateral anterior superior temporal gyri (aSTG), regions along the ventral language comprehension stream that map sound onto meaning. These regions are more anterior than those previously identified for auditory-only effects; however, the same cross-over interaction pattern emerged implying similar underlying computations at play. The findings suggest that the mechanisms that integrate information across modality and across sentence and phonetic levels of processing recruit amodal areas where reading and spoken lexical and semantic access converge.     Inspeção de estruturas de betão armado com base em veículos aéreos não tripulados e processamento supervisionado de imagem

    A presente dissertação tem como objetivos o desenvolvimento de ferramentas e procedimentos para a deteção de anomalias em estruturas de betão armado de forma semi automatizada recorrendo a técnicas de Deep Learning. Das várias anomalias que podem ser encontradas em estruturas de betão armado, destacam-se neste documento as fissuras e as armaduras expostas, para as quais foi desenvolvido um método alternativo de inspeção, baseado no processamento avançado de imagens, de modo a determinar se seria viável e vantajosa a substituição deste método pelo método de inspeção visual tradicional. As ferramentas desenvolvidas assentam em técnicas de Inteligência Artificial, em particilar as redes neuronais convolucionais (RNC), mais concretamente na utilização do transfer learning recorrendo à RNC Alexnet. Foram conduzidas experiências em diversas construções de modo a aferir a eficiência do método, recorrendo a veículos aéreos não tripulados (VANT), e em condições de acesso condicionado. Os resultados obtidos mostram ser bastante promissores, sendo previsível que do aprimoramento do método, possa resultar na adoção desta tecnologia como auxiliar nas inspeções visuais num futuro próximo.This dissertation aim is to develop tools and procedures for the detection of anomalies in reinforced concrete structures in a semi-automated way using Deep-Learning techniques. Of the various anomalies that can be found in reinforced concrete structures, this document highlights the exposed rebars and cracks, for which an alternative inspection method was developed, based in advanced image processing, in order to determine whether it would be feasible and advantageous to replace this method with the traditional visual inspection method. The tools developed are based on artificial intelligence techniques, in particular, convolutional neural networks (CNN), more specifically in the use of transfer-learning using the CNN Alexnet. Experiments were conducted in several constructions in order to assess the efficiency of the method, using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), under conditions of conditioned access. The results show to be quite promising, and it is foreseeable that its improvement may result in the adoption of this technology for aid in visual inspections in the near future

    Legionella anisa or Legionella bozemanii? Traditional and molecular techniques as support in the environmental surveillance of a hospital water network

    Understanding the actual distribution of different Legionella species in water networks would help prevent outbreaks. Culture investigations followed by serological agglutination tests, with poly/monovalent antisera, still represent the gold standard for isolation and identification of Legionella strains. However, also MALDI-TOF and mip-gene sequencing are currently used. This study was conducted to genetically correlate strains of Legionella non pneumophila (L-np) isolated during environmental surveillance comparing different molecular techniques. Overall, 346 water samples were collected from the water system of four pavilions located in a hospital of the Apulia Region of Italy. Strains isolated from the samples were then identified by serological tests, MALDI-TOF, and mip-gene sequencing. Overall, 24.9% of water samples were positive for Legionella, among which the majority were Legionella pneumophila (Lpn) 1 (52.3%), followed by Lpn2-15 (20.9%), L-np (17.4%), Lpn1 + Lpn2-15 (7.1%), and L-np + Lpn1 (2.3%). Initially, L-np strains were identified as L. bozemanii by monovalent antiserum, while MALDI-TOF and mip-gene sequencing assigned them to L. anisa. More cold water than hot water samples were contaminated by L. anisa (p < 0.001). PFGE, RAPD, Rep-PCR, and SAU-PCR were performed to correlate L. anisa strains. Eleven out of 14 strains identified in all four pavilions showed 100% of similarity upon PFGE analysis. RAPD, Rep-PCR, and SAU-PCR showed greater discriminative power than PFGE

    Younger age at onset and sex predict celiac disease in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes: an Italian multicenter study

    OBJECTIVE— To estimate the prevalence of biopsy-confirmed celiac disease in Italian children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes and to assess whether age at onset of type 1 diabetes is independently associated with diagnosis of celiac disease. RESEARCH DESIGNANDMETHODS— The study group was a clinic-based cohort of children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes cared for in 25 Italian centers for childhood diabetes. Yearly screening for celiac disease was performed using IgA/IgG anti-gliadin and IgA anti-endomysium antibodies. RESULTS— Of the 4,322 children and adolescents (age 11.8 4.2 years) identified with type 1 diabetes, biopsy-confirmed celiac disease was diagnosed in 292 (prevalence 6.8%, 95% confidence interval [CI] 6.0 –7.6), with a higher risk seen in girls than in boys (odds ratio [OR] 1.93, 1.51–2.47). In 89% of these, diabetes was diagnosed before celiac disease. In logistic regression analyses, being younger at onset of diabetes, being female, and having a diagnosis of a thyroid disorder were independently associated with the risk of having diabetes and celiac disease. In comparison with subjects who were older than 9 years at onset of diabetes, subjects who were younger than 4 years at onset had an OR of 3.27 (2.20–4.85). CONCLUSIONS— We have provided evidence that 1) the prevalence of biopsy-confirmed celiac disease in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes is high (6.8%); 2) the risk of having both diseases is threefold higher in children diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 4 years than in those age 9 years; and 3) girls have a higher risk of having both diseases than boys

    Intestinal Obstruction Syndromes in Cystic Fibrosis: Meconium Ileus, Distal Intestinal Obstruction Syndrome, and Constipation

    Meconium ileus at birth, distal intestinal obstruction syndrome (DIOS), and constipation are an interrelated group of intestinal obstruction syndromes with a variable severity of obstruction that occurs in cystic fibrosis patients. Long-term follow-up studies show that today meconium ileus is not a risk factor for impaired nutritional status, pulmonary function, or survival. DIOS and constipation are frequently seen in cystic fibrosis patients, especially later in life; genetic, dietary, and other associations have been explored. Diagnosis of DIOS is based on suggestive symptoms, with a right lower quadrant mass confirmed on abdominal radiography, whereas symptoms of constipation are milder and of longer standing. In DIOS, early aggressive laxative treatment with oral laxatives (polyethylene glycol) or intestinal lavage with balanced osmotic electrolyte solution and rehydration is required, which now makes the need for surgical interventions rare. Constipation can generally be well controlled with polyethylene glycol maintenance treatment
