    Staurosira magallanesica, a replacement name for Staurosira patagonica

    Staurosira patagonica M.L.Garcia, Maidana, Ector & E.Morales described a new species found in material of Maar Magallanes, Patagonia, Argentina and other lakes in southern Patagonia. This new species was analysed in detail by light and electron microscopy and a comprehensive description is given in Garcia et al. (2017: 107, 114, figs 2-45). However, this name is a later homonym of Staurosira patagonica Cleve, 1882. If we compare our species to Cleve’s illustration (Cleve 1882: pl. 16: fig. 13), we can easily differentiate the two by their general valve outline and morphometric data. As pointed out by Garcia et al. (2017), re-examination of the type material of members of the Fragilariaceae is needed to confirm identities, establish taxonomic boundaries and to facilitate identification, and this is also the case with Staurosira patagonica Cleve. A new name is, however, required for Staurosira patagonica M.L.Garcia, Maidana, Ector & E.Morales as it is an illegitimate name: Staurosira magallanesica M.L.Garcia, Maidana, Ector & E.Morales nom. nov.     Techniques for a Successful Full-length Peroneal Artery Sonographic Visualization

    AbstractAimTo compare the lateral and medial approaches to insonate the peroneal artery (PA).MethodsLateral and medial sonographic approaches are compared in 20 healthy individuals. Arterial visualization was defined as visibility of both adventitias between both peroneal veins.ResultsOne hundred percent PAs were successfully identified through the lateral approach compared to 85% through the medial approach. The medial approach failed to adequately image six proximal PAs.ConclusionThe lateral approach to the PA may be superior to the medial view. The PA should be imaged through both approaches

    Duplex Scanning or Arteriography for Preoperative Planning of Lower Limb Revascularisation

    AbstractObjective: to compare the accuracy of duplex and angiography for the planning of lower limb revascularisation.Patients and methods: Sixty limbs (82% with critical limb ischaemia) were assessed by means of duplex by one surgeon and by angiography by another in terms of the optimum inflow and outflow sites for arterial bypass. These data were then compared with the final operation performed which was used as the gold standard. Surgeons were blinded to the determinations of the other.Results: surgical plans based on duplex scan and angiography were correct in 77% (40/52) and 79% (41/52), respectively and plans based on the one imaging modality was modified by the other in only 1 and 2 instances. The diagnostic agreement between duplex scanning and arteriography was excellent (Kappa value=0.94, 95% C.I. 0.89–0.98).Conclusions: the reliability of duplex scanning is comparable to digital angiography in the preoperative planning of lower extremity arterial reconstruction. However neither exam can be considered as the gold standard because intraoperative arteriography needs to be available in a significant number of infrapopliteal procedures

    Garbage collection auto-tuning for Java MapReduce on Multi-Cores

    MapReduce has been widely accepted as a simple programming pattern that can form the basis for efficient, large-scale, distributed data processing. The success of the MapReduce pattern has led to a variety of implementations for different computational scenarios. In this paper we present MRJ, a MapReduce Java framework for multi-core architectures. We evaluate its scalability on a four-core, hyperthreaded Intel Core i7 processor, using a set of standard MapReduce benchmarks. We investigate the significant impact that Java runtime garbage collection has on the performance and scalability of MRJ. We propose the use of memory management auto-tuning techniques based on machine learning. With our auto-tuning approach, we are able to achieve MRJ performance within 10% of optimal on 75% of our benchmark tests

    Bacterial biodiversity drives the evolution of CRISPR-based phage resistance

The final version is available from Springer Nature via the DOI in this record About half of all bacteria carry genes for CRISPR–Cas adaptive immune systems, which provide immunological memory by inserting short DNA sequences from phage and other parasitic DNA elements into CRISPR loci on the host genome. Whereas CRISPR loci evolve rapidly in natural environments, bacterial species typically evolve phage resistance by the mutation or loss of phage receptors under laboratory conditions. Here we report how this discrepancy may in part be explained by differences in the biotic complexity of in vitro and natural environments. Specifically, by using the opportunistic pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa and its phage DMS3vir, we show that coexistence with other human pathogens amplifies the fitness trade-offs associated with the mutation of phage receptors, and therefore tips the balance in favour of the evolution of CRISPR-based resistance. We also demonstrate that this has important knock-on effects for the virulence of P. aeruginosa, which became attenuated only if the bacteria evolved surface-based resistance. Our data reveal that the biotic complexity of microbial communities in natural environments is an important driver of the evolution of CRISPR–Cas adaptive immunity, with key implications for bacterial fitness and virulence.European CommissionNatural Environment Research Council (NERC

    The kinematics of the quadrupolar nebula M1-75 and the identification of its central star

    The link between the shaping of bipolar planetary nebulae and their central stars is still poorly understood. The kinematics and shaping of the multipolar nebula M 1-75 are hereby investigated, and the location and nature of its central star are briefly discussed. Fabry-Perot data from GHaFAS on the WHT sampling the Doppler shift of the [N II] 658.3 nm line are used to study the dynamics of the nebula, by means of a detailed 3-D spatio-kinematical model. Multi-wavelength images and spectra from the WFC and IDS on the INT, and from ACAM on the WHT, allowed us to constrain the parameters of the central star. The two pairs of lobes, angularly separated by ~22 degrees, were ejected simultaneously approx. ~3500-5000 years ago, at the adopted distance range from 3.5 to 5.0 kpc. The larger lobes show evidence of a slight degree of point symmetry. The shaping of the nebula could be explained by wind interaction in a system consisting of a post-AGB star surrounded by a disc warped by radiative instabilities. This requires the system to be a close binary or a single star which engulfed a planet as it died. On the other hand, we present broad- and narrow-band images and a low S/N optical spectrum of the highly-reddened, previously unnoticed star which is likely the nebular progenitor. Its estimated V-I colour allows us to derive a rough estimate of the parameters and nature of the central star.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysic

    Este libro se gestó a la sombra de un gran interrogante que atraviesa nuestro trabajo en el aula, puntualmente ¿cómo proporcionar a los/as estudiantes textos que sin dejar de ser rigurosos y académicos faciliten la comprensión de la Historia, Historia del Arte y Geografía? Fue en esa dirección que asumimos este desafío, ahora plasmado en su escritura, con el objetivo de generar una producción académica, pero mediada, para optimizar el acceso y la lectura de los/as estudiantes en la dinámica del proceso de enseñanza y aprendizaje. Los trabajos que integran esta producción se inscriben en una línea que persigue aunar criterios metodológicos y didácticos, propugnando el fortalecimiento de los equipos docentes en función de la enseñanza de las Ciencias Sociales en el ámbito del Bachillerato de Bellas Artes. La escritura de los capítulos adhiere a una perspectiva de abordaje del pasado descentrada de los lineamientos de la “historia única”, narrativa en torno a la cual se han solidificado determinadas memorias silenciándose otras, alternativas o discrepantes. La novelista nigeriana Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, en su brillante conferencia titulada The dangers of a single story (2010) pone la mirada en el poder y en el rol que este ha desempeñado en la elaboración de las versiones sobre el pasado. En suma, del poder depende quiénes son los que cuentan, cómo se cuenta, cuánto se cuenta, “es la habilidad no sólo de contar la historia del otro, sino de hacer que esa sea la historia definitiva”. Por lo general, se trata de “una historia lineal y estatista, que nos impide ver que en cada momento del pasado ha existido una diversidad de futuros posibles” (Fontana, 2003, 17), que fueron proyectos alternativos que no lograron sus fines y quedaron subsumidos bajo la versión que finalmente se impuso. En esa trama, los sujetos sociales en los que se pone el foco de atención son siempre las personas “relevantes” que pertenecen a los grupos dominantes, por lo tanto, el relato histórico toma distancia de los hombres y mujeres comunes, personas de carne y hueso que también contribuyen a moldear el microcosmos del cual formaron parte.Bachillerato de Bellas Artes "Prof. Francisco A.
