    Signatures of pulsars in the light curves of newly formed supernova remnants

    We explore the effect of pulsars, in particular those born with millisecond periods, on their surrounding supernova ejectas. While they spin down, fast-spinning pulsars release their tremendous rotational energy in the form of a relativistic magnetized wind that can affect the dynamics and luminosity of the supernova. We estimate the thermal and non-thermal radiations expected from these specific objects, concentrating at times a few years after the onset of the explosion. We find that the bolometric light curves present a high luminosity plateau (that can reach 10^(43)–10^(44) erg s^(−1)) over a few years. An equally bright TeV gamma-ray emission, and a milder X-ray peak (of the order of 10^(40)–10^(42) erg s^(−1)) could also appear a few months to a few years after the explosion, as the pulsar wind nebula emerges, depending on the injection parameters. The observations of these signatures by following the emission of a large number of supernovae could have important implications for the understanding of core-collapse supernovae and reveal the nature of the remnant compact object

    Stress, coping and job satisfaction in UK academics during the COVID-19 pandemic

    Objectives. The occurrence of work-related stress is high among UK academics. This is associated with increased risk of ill-health, reduced productivity, and lower job satisfaction. These might have been exacerbated by the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. Social support and coping strategies have the potential to ameliorate the impact of stress but have been less explored in academics; these were explored in a cross-sectional study. Methods. Fifty academic staff were recruited via links posted on social media and through snowballing sample technique. The survey included key demographics such as age, gender, relationship status, educational attainment, known to have relationship with work-related stress. Other measures include perceived stress, social support, coping strategies and job satisfaction. Results. Moderate stress was found in UK academics. Greater impact of COVID-19 and greater use of avoidance coping were significant predictors of higher stress. Conclusion. Encouraging the use of adaptive coping strategies such as problem solving, through staff training could help to reduce stress. Future longitudinal research should examine stress and coping in academics, establishing causation, while accounting for confounders such as contract type, teaching hours, and class sizes. Stress-management interventions should account for pandemic-related stressors including high workload and isolation, as academics continue to engage in hybrid/remote working. Implication. It is important that universities put in place support systems to reduce the level of stress in academics. This could be through training and education in the use of adaptive coping strategies, such as planning and problem solving as well as support from co-workers and management; which are associated with positive psychological wellbeing

    Ultra-high-energy cosmic rays and neutrinos from tidal disruptions by massive black holes

    Tidal disruptions are extremely powerful phenomena that have been designated as candidate sources of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays. The disruption of a star by a black hole can naturally provide protons and heavier nuclei, which can be injected and accelerated to ultra-high energies within a jet. Inside the jet, accelerated nuclei are likely to interact with a dense photon field, leading to a significant production of neutrinos and secondary particles. We model numerically the propagation and interactions of high-energy nuclei in jetted tidal disruption events in order to evaluate consistently their signatures in cosmic rays and neutrinos. We propose a simple model of the light curve of tidal disruption events, consisting of two stages: a high state with bright luminosity and short duration and a medium state, less bright and longer lasting. These two states have different impacts on the production of cosmic rays and neutrinos. In order to calculate the diffuse fluxes of cosmic rays and neutrinos, we model the luminosity function and redshift evolution of jetted tidal disruption events. We find that we can fit the latest ultra-high-energy cosmic-ray spectrum and composition results of the Auger experiment for a range of reasonable parameters. The diffuse neutrino flux associated with this scenario is found to be subdominant, but nearby events can be detected by IceCube or next-generation detectors such as IceCube-Gen2

    Positive psychology of Malaysian students: impacts of engagement, motivation, self-compassion and wellbeing on mental health

    Malaysia plays a key role in education of the Asia Pacific, expanding its scholarly output rapidly. However, mental health of Malaysian students is challenging, and their help-seeking is low because of stigma. This study explored the relationships between mental health and positive psychological constructs (academic engagement, motivation, self-compassion, and wellbeing), and evaluated the relative contribution of each positive psychological construct to mental health in Malaysian students. An opportunity sample of 153 students completed the measures regarding these constructs. Correlation, regression, and mediation analyses were conducted. Engagement, amotivation, self-compassion, and wellbeing were associated with, and predicted large variance in mental health. Self-compassion was the strongest independent predictor of mental health among all the positive psychological constructs. Findings can imply the strong links between mental health and positive psychology, especially selfcompassion. Moreover, intervention studies to examine the effects of self-compassion training on mental health of Malaysian students appear to be warranted.N/

    Ontological addiction theory: attachment to me, mine, and I

    Background: Ontological addiction theory (OAT) is a novel metaphysical model of psychopathology and posits that human beings are prone to forming implausible beliefs concerning the way they think they exist, and that these beliefs can become addictive leading to functional impairments and mental illness. The theoretical underpinnings of OAT derive from the Buddhist philosophical perspective that all phenomena, including the self, do not manifest inherently or independently. Aims and methods: This paper outlines the theoretical foundations of OAT along with indicative supportive empirical evidence from studies evaluating meditation awareness training as well as studies investigating non-attachment, emptiness, compassion, and loving-kindness. Results: OAT provides a novel perspective on addiction, the factors that underlie mental illness, and how beliefs concerning selfhood are shaped and reified. Conclusion: In addition to continuing to test the underlying assumptions of OAT, future empirical research needs to determine how ontological addiction fits with extant theories of self, reality, and suffering, as well with more established models of addiction

    Mental Distress, Stigma and Help-Seeking in the Evangelical Christian Church: Study Protocol

    A large body of research supports the central importance of religious and spiritual belief systems for personal wellbeing. Many religious communities hold beliefs about the causes and suitable treatments for mental health conditions, which can influence how an individual experiences their mental health, as well as the likelihood of seeking professional or religious help for their psychological difficulties. Research suggests that this is especially the case for evangelical Christians, who are more likely to view mental illness as caused by demons, sin, diminished faith, or generational curses. Whilst recent qualitative evidence suggests that such beliefs can hold negative effects for evangelical Christians, there is little research exploring quantitative pathways. This study protocol paper presents a pilot study, which aims to explore how beliefs about the causes of mental illness, religious fundamentalism, help-seeking, stigma and mental health are related in evangelical Christian communities. Whilst there is some existing research exploring this area, most is drawn from a US context. The findings of the present study, therefore, will uniquely apply to a UK context. A quantitative design is proposed, which will involve statistical analyses such as correlation, regression, moderation and path analysis, to explore associations between these variables. Ethical considerations and dissemination plans are discussed, with awareness of characteristics of our target sample.N/

    The optical depth of the Universe to ultrahigh energy cosmic ray scattering in the magnetized large scale structure

    This paper provides an analytical description of the transport of ultrahigh energy cosmic rays in an inhomogeneously magnetized intergalactic medium. This latter is modeled as a collection of magnetized scattering centers such as radio cocoons, magnetized galactic winds, clusters or magnetized filaments of large scale structure, with negligible magnetic fields in between. Magnetic deflection is no longer a continuous process, it is rather dominated by scattering events. We study the interaction between high energy cosmic rays and the scattering agents. We then compute the optical depth of the Universe to cosmic ray scattering and discuss the phenomological consequences for various source scenarios. For typical parameters of the scattering centers, the optical depth is greater than unity at 5x10^{19}eV, but the total angular deflection is smaller than unity. One important consequence of this scenario is the possibility that the last scattering center encountered by a cosmic ray be mistaken with the source of this cosmic ray. In particular, we suggest that part of the correlation recently reported by the Pierre Auger Observatory may be affected by such delusion: this experiment may be observing in part the last scattering surface of ultrahigh energy cosmic rays rather than their source population. Since the optical depth falls rapidly with increasing energy, one should probe the arrival directions of the highest energy events beyond 10^{20}eV on an event by event basis to circumvent this effect.Comment: version to appear in PRD; substantial improvements: extended introduction, sections added on angular images and on direction dependent effects with sky maps of optical depth, enlarged discussion of Auger results (conclusions unchanged); 27 pages, 9 figure

    Cationic siRNAs Provide Carrier-Free Gene Silencing in Animal Cells

    siRNA-mediated gene silencing requires intracellular delivery of the nucleic acid. We have developed a carrierless molecular approach that follows the same cell entry route as cationic supramolecular complexes, yet should avoid the extracellular barriers encountered by nanoparticles. Cationic oligospermine−oligonucleotide conjugates (ZNAs, for Zip Nucleic Acids) were synthesized stepwise on an oligonucleotide synthesizer using a DMT-spermine phosphoramidite derivative. They were shown to enter cells and have access to the cytoplasm, provided their formal charge ratio N/P was >1.5. Cationic siRNAs that fulfilled this condition were shown to achieve selective inhibition of luciferase gene expression in the submicromolar concentration range in constitutively luciferase-expressing cells

    From Whence Cometh My Help? Psychological Distress and Help-Seeking in the Evangelical Christian Church

    Seeking professional help for psychological distress is generally associated with improved outcomes and lower levels of distress. Given the saliency of religious teachings, it has been shown that aspects of Christian belief may influence adherents’ attitudes towards mental health help-seeking. Based on existing research on American Evangelicals, it was hypothesised that religious social support would positively predict attitudes towards mental health help-seeking, whilst fundamentalism, mental distress, and the belief that psychopathology is caused by immoral or sinful living would negatively predict participants’ attitudes. On a convenience sample of 252 British Evangelicals, our hypotheses were supported and these variables significantly predicted participants’ attitudes towards seeking mental health help, F(7,243) = 9.64, p < 0.001, R2 = 0.195. These findings together suggest that whilst religious support positively predicts help-seeking attitudes, Evangelical fundamentalism, in addition to beliefs that mental illness has a spiritual cause, as well as experiences of mental distress may be associated with more negative attitudes towards psychotherapeutic intervention. Thus, mental health practitioners should be aware of clients’ religious worldviews and tailor interventions appropriately, acknowledging that working with religious organisations may yield the most positive outcomes for patients.N/

Small tags such as Cys4 tag (tetracysteine; Cys–Cys–X–X–Cys–Cys) are less likely disrupt protein function in the living cell than green fluorescent protein. Herein we report the first example of the design and synthesis of a dual fluorescence and hyperpolarized 129Xe NMR-based sensor of Cys4-tagged proteins. This sensor becomes fluorescent when bound to such Cys4-tagged peptides, and the 129Xe NMR spectrum exhibits a specific signal, characteristic of the biosensor-peptide association
