The Spanish Institute of Oceanography carried out in 2010 two bottom trawl surveys in the NAFO Regulatory Area in Division 3NO and 3L during the months of June, July and August respectively. The results on Northern shrimp (Pandalus borealis) are presented and compared with those from previous surveys from the same series. In 2010 the catch (21 kg.) and estimated biomass (114 t.) confirm the decrease of shrimp importance from 2004 in 3NO. In 3L Division, northern shrimp indices show a drastic decline (49% with respect to 2009) and confirm the downward trend initiated in 2009. Estimated biomass increased from 2003-2006; then, the values of these indices declined in 2007 (about 10%) and increased again in 2008 up to its historical maximum (149265 t.). In 2010 the biomass estimated 37803 t in 3L and 114 t. in 3NO were the lowest in the time series of Spanish . Catch results from the surveys and data analysis are discussed in this paper

The relationship between approaches to learning and academic performance in higher technological education has been poorly documented and there is still no definitive consensus on the matter among these studies. The objective of this work is to demonstrate the relationship of the learning approaches used by Computer Science students with academic performance. The methodological approach is qualitative with a descriptive cross-sectional study, where the inventory based on the reduced ASSIST scale is used as an instrument, to a population sample for convenience of two institutions of higher technological education. The main conclusion is that there are marked statistical differences between age groups, biological gender and semester that attend with the dimensions of superficial, strategic and deep focus, exposing the instrument a high internal consistency for the dimensions and good for the instrument in general. Higgs Mass Bounds Separate Models of Electroweak Symmetry Breaking

Vacuum stability implies a lower limit on the mass of the higgs boson in the Standard Model (SM). In contrast, an upper limit on the lightest higgs mass can be calculated in supersymmetric (susy) models. The main uncertainty in each limit is the value of the top mass, which may now be fixed by the recent CDF result. We study the possibility that these bounds do not overlap, and find that (i) a mass gap emerges at mt160m_t\sim 160 GeV between the SM and the Minimal Susy Standard Model (MSSM); and between the SM and the Minimal plus Singlet Susy Model [(M+1)SSM] if the independent scalar self--coupling of the latter is perturbatively small or if the tanβ\tan\beta parameter is large; this gap widens with increasing mtm_t; (ii) there is no overlap between the SM and the MSSM bounds at even smaller values of mtm_t for the tanβ\tan\beta value (1\sim 1--2) preferred in Supersymmetric Grand Unified Theories. Thus, if the new top mass measurement remains valid, a measurement of the first higgs mass will serve to exclude either the SM or MSSM/(M+1)SSM higgs sectors. In addition, we discuss the upper bound on the lightest higgs mass in susy models with an extended higgs sector, and in models with a strongly interacting higgs sector. Finally, we comment on the discovery potential for the lightest higgses in these models.Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures, VAND-TH-94-1

A Community Program of Integrated Care for Frail Older Adults: +AGIL Barcelona

Objectives: To assess the 3-month impact on physical function of a program for community-dwelling frail older adults, based on the integration of primary care, geriatric medicine, and community resources, implemented in 'real life'. Design: Interventional cohort study. Setting: Primary care in Barcelona, Spain. Participants: Individuals aged ≥80 years (n=134), presenting at least one sign of frailty (i.e., slow gait speed, weakness, memory complaints, involuntary weight loss, poor social support). Intervention: After frailty screening by the primary care team, candidates were referred to a geriatric team (geriatrician + physical therapist), who performed a comprehensive geriatric assessment and designed a tailored multidisciplinary intervention in the community, including a) multi-modal physical activity (PA) sessions, b) promotion of adherence to a Mediterranean diet c) health education and d) medication review. Measurements: Participants were assessed based on a comprehensive geriatric assessment including physical performance (Short Physical Performance Battery -SPPB- and gait speed), at baseline and at a three month follow-up. Results: A total of 112 (83.6%) participants (mean age=80.8 years, 67.9% women) were included in this research. Despite being independent in daily life, participants' physical performance was impaired (SPPB=7.5, SD=2.1, gait speed=0.71, SD=0.20 m/sec). After three months, 90.2% of participants completed ≥7.5 physical activity sessions. The mean improvements were +1.47 (SD 1.64) points (p<0.001) for SPPB, +0.08 (SD 0.13) m/sec (p<0.001) for gait speed, -5.5 (SD 12.10) sec (p<0.001) for chair stand test, and 53% (p<0.001) improved their balance. Results remained substantially unchanged after stratifying the analyses according to the severity of frailty. Conclusions: Our results suggested that a 'real-world' multidisciplinary intervention, integrating primary care, geriatric care, and community services may improve physical function, a marker of frailty, within 3 months. Further studies are needed to address the long-term impact and scalability of this implementation program

Are Messages of R-parity Violating Supersymmetry Hidden within Top Quark Signals ?

In an R-parity nonconserving supersymmetric theory, the lighter stop can dominantly decay into bμb\mu and bτb\tau if R-parity breaking has to explain the neutrino mass and mixing pattern suggested by the data on atmospheric muon neutrinos. This should give rise to dilepton+dijetdilepton+dijet and singlelepton+jetssingle-lepton+jets, signals resembling those of the top quark at the Fermilab Tevatron. One can thus constrain the stop parameter space using the current top search data, and similarly look for the first signals of supersymmetry at the upgraded runs of the Tevatron.Comment: 13 pages, RevTeX, 2 PS figures, uses epsfig.sty, few comments and references added, version to appear in Phys. The Higgs Mass as the Discriminator of Electroweak Models

In the Minimal Supersymmetric Model (MSSM) and the Next to Minimal Supersymmetric Model [(M+1)SSM], an upper bound on the lightest higgs mass can be calculated. On the other hand, vacuum stability implies a lower limit on the mass of the higgs boson in the Standard Model (SM). We find that a gap exists for mt>165m_t \stackrel{>}{\sim} 165 GeV between the SM and both the MSSM and the (M+1)SSM bounds. Thus, if the new top quark mass measurement by CDF remains valid, a first measurement of the higgs mass will serve to exclude either the SM or the MSSM/(M+1)SSM higgs sectors. In addition, we discuss Supersymmetric Grand Unified Theories, other extentions of the SM, the discovery potential of the lightest higgs, and the assumptions on which our conclusions are based.Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures, VAND-TH-94-1

Late-time cosmology in (phantom) scalar-tensor theory: dark energy and the cosmic speed-up

We consider late-time cosmology in a (phantom) scalar-tensor theory with an exponential potential, as a dark energy model with equation of state parameter close to -1 (a bit above or below this value). Scalar (and also other kinds of) matter can be easily taken into account. An exact spatially-flat FRW cosmology is constructed for such theory, which admits (eternal or transient) acceleration phases for the current universe, in correspondence with observational results. Some remarks on the possible origin of the phantom, starting from a more fundamental theory, are also made. It is shown that quantum gravity effects may prevent (or, at least, delay or soften) the cosmic doomsday catastrophe associated with the phantom, i.e. the otherwise unavoidable finite-time future singularity (Big Rip). A novel dark energy model (higher-derivative scalar-tensor theory) is introduced and it is shown to admit an effective phantom/quintessence description with a transient acceleration phase. In this case, gravity favors that an initially insignificant portion of dark energy becomes dominant over the standard matter/radiation components in the evolution process.Comment: LaTeX file, 48 pages, discussion of Big Rip is enlarged, a reference is adde

Particle spectrum in the modified NMSSM in the strong Yukawa coupling limit

    Get PDF
A theoretical analysis of solutions of renormalisation group equations in the MSSM corresponding to the quasi-fixed point conditions shows that the mass of the lightest Higgs boson in this case does not exceed 94±5GeV94\pm 5\text{GeV}. It means that a substantial part of the parameter space of the MSSM is practically excluded by existing experimental data from LEP II. In the NMSSM the upper bound on the lightest Higgs boson mass reaches its maximum in the strong Yukawa coupling regime, when Yukawa constants are considerably larger the gauge ones on the Grand Unification scale. In this paper a particle spectrum in a simple modification of NMSSM which leads to a self-consistent solution in the considered region of the parameter space is studied. This model allows one to get mh125GeVm_h\sim 125\text{GeV} even for comparatively low values of tanβ1.9\tan\beta\ge 1.9. For an analysis of the Higgs boson spectrum and neutralino spectrum a method for diagonalisation of mass matrices proposed formerly is used. The mass of the lightest Higgs boson in this model does not exceed 130.5±3.5GeV130.5\pm 3.5\text{GeV}.Comment: 34 pages, 5 figures included, LaTeX 2
