Should Mission Statements Be Promises? (And should they have to be?)

    Get PDF
This paper explores how mission statements might become a resource for improving nonprofit governance and accountability. The author asks what legal duty or moral obligation nonprofit organizations should be under to articulate a mission statement that others (the government, donors, prospective beneficiaries, the public at large) could use to assess their goals and performance. The paper explores how mission statements might include auditable claims, rather than vague aspirations, and raises questions about how various stakeholders might be empowered to use mission statements in holding an organization to account. This publication is Hauser Center Working Paper No. 33.5. Hauser Working Paper Series Nos. 33.1-33.9 were prepared as background papers for the Nonprofit Governance and Accountability Symposium October 3-4, 2006

Scalar Matter Coupled to Quantum Gravity in the Causal Approach: Finite One-Loop Calculations and Perturbative Gauge Invariance

    Get PDF
Quantum gravity coupled to scalar massive matter fields is investigated within the framework of causal perturbation theory. One-loop calculations include matter loop graviton self-energy and matter self-energy and yield ultraviolet finite and cutoff-free expressions. Perturbative gauge invariance to second order implies the usual Slavnov-Ward identities for the graviton self-energy in the loop graph sector and generates the correct quartic graviton-matter interaction in the tree graph sector. The mass zero case is also discussed.Comment: 37 pages, latex, no figures, some typos corrected, section 3 modifie

    Change terminates housemother program

With the changing picture of dormitory life, the image of housemothers has also changes. When former Dean of Men John Stewart hired housemothers 15 years ago, he told them they were to train the boys in the social graces--pulling out chairs and opening doors. Stewart felt women would improve the atmosphere in the dorms

Training high performance skills using above real-time training

    Get PDF
The Above Real-Time Training (ARTT) concept is a unique approach to training high performance skills. ARTT refers to a training paradigm that places the operator in a simulated environment that functions at faster than normal time. Such a training paradigm represents a departure from the intuitive, but not often supported, feeling that the best practice is determined by the training environment with the highest fidelity. This approach is hypothesized to provide greater 'transfer value' per simulation trial, by incorporating training techniques and instructional features into the simulator. These techniques allow individuals to acquire these critical skills faster and with greater retention. ARTT also allows an individual trained in 'fast time' to operate at what appears to be a more confident state, when the same task is performed in a real-time environment. Two related experiments are discussed. The findings appear to be consistent with previous findings that show positive effects of task variation during training. Moreover, ARTT has merit in improving or maintaining transfer with sharp reductions in training time. There are indications that the effectiveness of ARTT varies as a function of task content and possibly task difficulty. Other implications for ARTT are discussed along with future research directions

Analyzing the Relationship Between COVID and Amateur Painting

    Get PDF
The COVID-19 pandemic has left many at home, looking for something to occupy their time. People have used social media platforms to share how they use their time with ample posts about baking, sewing, and painting. This project is particularly interested in the increasing popularity of painting, evident not only on social media, but also on television, for example, PBS’s “The Joy of Painting,” hosted by the much loved Bob Ross. While many young adults enjoy watching Bob Ross for its quiet tranquility, and the ironic pleasure of his distinctive mannerisms, there are those, perhaps, who are actually inspired to take up painting themselves. This research focuses on business reports from the art supply industry, that give a history of sales and sales projections, to support my contention that there has been a significant increase in amateur painting as a result of the pandemic. There have been earlier periods during which amateur painting has flourished, and I will compare the prevailing conditions that fostered increased creative activity historically, with the circumstances of confinement that we have recently been subject to. Keywords: amateur painting, amateur art, art supply industry, Bob Ross, pandemic recreationhttps://orb.binghamton.edu/research_days_posters_2021/1077/thumbnail.jp

Public Elementary School Teachers’ Perceptions of Health Education & Promotion

    Get PDF
Background: The importance of school health education has become well-known in the past two decades, however, there is limited research surrounding the perceptions and attitudes of classroom teachers and school health. The purpose of this study was to understand classroom teachers’ perceptions of health education at the elementary school level, so that policy makers might have a clearer understanding of the state of health in today’s classrooms. Methods: Public Elementary School Teachers, located in Western New York, participated in a qualitative online survey consisting of 10 questions. The survey focused on their perceptions of health education and promotion. Participant’s answers were then analyzed by researchers, using an open coding process, classifying teachers results into major themes and topics. Results: The majority of teachers who responded were passionate about creating healthy classrooms, yet felt limited due to the lack of accessible resources and scope of practice. Many teachers understood the importance of school health and would attempt to incorporate aspects of health education into various moments throughout the day. Conclusions: Despite a wide range of student health issues and a lack of resources, classroom teachers are passionate about creating healthy classrooms and healthy students

The Effect of Teaching with Acoustical Guidance (TAG) on the Mastery of a Grand Rond de Jambe (En Dehors) and a Ballotte

    Get PDF
This study examined the effect of Teaching with Acoustical Guidance (TAG) on the mastery of two ballet skills, the Grand Rond de Jambe (en dehors) and a Ballotte\u27. Dance technique classes still follow traditional methods of teaching and mastering skills without much integration of motor learning concepts. TAG Teach is a method that uses positive reinforcement, shaping, and a hand held device that produces an acoustic sound to mark correct behaviors at the moment they occur. The purpose of this study was to determine if TAG was a faster and more effective technique to aid in the mastery of two ballet skills. The participants were also asked if they found TAG to boost their confidence, make them happier, make them feel that they learned more, and if they found it pleasing to use. Participants were 6 dancers who had never used TAG before; their ages were 17-19. A staggered multiple baseline design was used to see the progress of the two skills from baseline to mastery. One skill was taught with TAG and the other skill was taught using the traditional teaching method. A questionnaire was given at the end of each session asking about the participants\u27 confidence, happiness, learning, and anxiety while training with the two different methods. Results showed that all participants mastered their TAG trained skill first, and preferred TAG to the traditional method. The participants were more confident with TAG, happier, felt they learned more, and found TAG more pleasing to use. TAG produced more practice trials in each session with the average ratings for correct responses to those trials at a higher level than the traditional teaching method. Although both methods helped participants to master the two skills dancers preferred TAG, and it produced higher correct responses to corrections making it more effective as a teaching method
