    Guide to some minerals and rocks in Indiana

    Indiana Geological Survey Circular 4The study of minerals and rocks is an important part of the science of geology, which treats of the history of the earth and its life, especially as recorded in the rocks. Surprisingly many of us accept as commonplace many of nature's creations because they are so familiar. Actually, we can find the earth we live on a fascinating world if only we open our eyes to see it. Geologically, Indiana is an interesting state. It has many fascinating geologic and scenic prospects in its more rugged regions., and even its flat areas possess much interesting geologic phenomenan. At one time or another everyone probably has been curious about some particular rock or other object originating in the earth. But most of us who have been curious about these rocks or objects could not identify them, and thus our curiosity remained unsatisfied because we could find no explanation for their existence. This circular was prepared with the hope that it may satisfy, at least in part, the curiosity aroused by finding rocks or minerals. It is hoped that those who have discovered rocks and minerals will be encouraged to become further acquainted with their finds by using this guide. It is impossible to cover fully in this brief report all the characteristics and variations of each kind of rock and mineral found in Indiana.     Affect and memory in young children

    The state-dependent theory of the relationship between affective states and memory holds that recall will be best when the affective state at recall matches that during learning. Sequential happy, neutral, and sad affective states that were either consistent (e.g., Happy-Happy) or inconsistent (e.g., Sad-Neutral) were experimentally induced in preschool children prior to encoding and then again prior to retrieval (free and cued recall, recognition memory). Facial ratings indicated that the inductions were effective in inducing affect. Nevertheless, emotional states did not influence children's ability to recall items under free or cued conditions, and recognition memory was essentially perfect for all subjects. Thus, there was no evidence for state-dependent learning or for a “positive loop” between subjects' positive affect at retrieval and memory for positively rated information.     Microplastic ingestion ubiquitous in marine turtles

    Despite concerns regarding the environmental impacts of microplastics, knowledge of the incidence and levels of synthetic particles in large marine vertebrates is lacking. Here, we utilize an optimized enzymatic digestion methodology, previously developed for zooplankton, to explore whether synthetic particles could be isolated from marine turtle ingesta. We report the presence of synthetic particles in every turtle subjected to investigation (n = 102) which included individuals from all seven species of marine turtle, sampled from three ocean basins (Atlantic [ATL]: n = 30, four species; Mediterranean (MED): n = 56, two species; Pacific (PAC): n = 16, five species). Most particles (n = 811) were fibres (ATL: 77.1% MED: 85.3% PAC: 64.8%) with blue and black being the dominant colours. In lesser quantities were fragments (ATL: 22.9%: MED: 14.7% PAC: 20.2%) and microbeads (4.8%; PAC only; to our knowledge the first isolation of microbeads from marine megavertebrates). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT‐IR) of a subsample of particles (n = 169) showed a range of synthetic materials such as elastomers (MED: 61.2%; PAC: 3.4%), thermoplastics (ATL: 36.8%: MED: 20.7% PAC: 27.7%) and synthetic regenerated cellulosic fibres (SRCF; ATL: 63.2%: MED: 5.8% PAC: 68.9%). Synthetic particles being isolated from species occupying different trophic levels suggest the possibility of multiple ingestion pathways. These include exposure from polluted seawater and sediments and/or additional trophic transfer from contaminated prey/forage items. We assess the likelihood that microplastic ingestion presents a significant conservation problem at current levels compared to other anthropogenic threats

    Z-Spec: a broadband direct-detection millimeter-wave spectrometer -- instrument status and first results

    We report on the status of Z-Spec, including preliminary results of our first astronomical measurements. Z-Spec is a cryogenic, broadband, millimeter-wave grating spectrometer designed for molecular line surveys of galaxies, including carbon monoxide redshift measurements of high-redshift submillimeter sources. With an instantaneous bandwidth of 185-305 GHz, Z-Spec covers the entire 1 mm atmospheric transmission window with a resolving power of 200-400. The spectrometer employs the Waveguide Far-Infrared Spectrometer (WaFIRS) architecture, in which the light propagation is confined within a parallel-plate waveguide, resulting in a minimum mechanical envelope. Its array of 160 silicon-nitride micromesh bolometers is cooled to below 100 mK for background-limited performance. With its sensitivity, broad bandwidth, and compactness, Z-Spec serves as a prototype for a future far-IR spectrometer aboard a cold telescope in space. Z-Spec successfully demonstrated functionality with a partial array of detectors and warm electronics during a week-long engineering run at the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory in June, 2005. We describe the instrument performance evaluated at the telescope and in subsequent laboratory tests and compare these results with design specifications. Following several modifications we returned to the telescope in April, 2006. We present a preliminary astronomical spectrum and discuss our plans to improve sensitivity and throughput to achieve our ultimate science goals

    Work-to-family enrichment and gender inequalities in eight European countries

    All social roles have positive and rewarding as well as negative/problematic aspects. Research on the work–family interface has predominantly focused on conflicting roles. In contrast, this paper extends research on work–family enrichment (WFE), a positive aspect of work and gender differences in WFE in a cross-national context. Drawing upon social role theory and the culture sensitive theory on work–family enrichment, we examined gender differences in experiences of developmental WFE in a sample of service sector employees in eight European countries. In line with traditional gender roles, women reported more WFE than men. The relationship was moderated by both an objective and subjective measure of gender egalitarianism but in the opposite direction as hypothesized. The gender gap in WFE was larger in more gender-egalitarian countries, where women may be better able to transfer resources from the work domain to benefit their family role than in low egalitarian societies. National differences in labour market factors, family models and the public discourse on work–life balance mainly explain the unanticipated findings

    Search for exotic resonances decaying into WZ/ZZ in pp collisions at √s=7 TeV

The analysis uses a data sample of pp collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5 fb-1 collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC at √s=7 TeV in 2011. No significant excess is observed in the mass distribution of the VZ candidates compared with the background expectation from standard model processes. Model-dependent upper limits at the 95% confidence level are set on the product of the cross section times the branching fraction of hypothetical particles decaying to the VZ final state as a function of mass. Sequential standard model W′ bosons with masses between 700 and 940 GeV are excluded. In the Randall-Sundrum model for graviton resonances with a coupling parameter of 0.05, masses between 750 and 880 GeV are also exclude

    Different expression ratio of S100A8/A9 and S100A12 in acute and chronic lung diseases

    Calgranulins are a family of powerful chemoattractants, which have been implicated as biomarkers in inflammatory diseases. To determine how different respiratory diseases affect the expression of calgranulins, we measured the expression of S100A8/A9 and S100A12 in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) of ARDS patients and healthy volunteers by ELISA. Analysis of calgranulin expression revealed a high level of S100A12 in the lavages of patients suffering from ARDS compared to controls (p< 0.001). Based on the hypothesis that the increased expression of S100A12 relative to the S100A8/A9 heterodimer was a characteristic of respiratory diseases with neutrophilic inflammation, we measured calgranulin expression in BALF of cystic fibrosis (CF) patients. Despite similarly elevated levels of S100A8/A9, S100A12 was significantly higher in ARDS compared to CF BALF (p<0.001). The differential expression of calgranulins was unique for inflammatory markers, as an array of cytokines did not differ between CF and ARDS patients
