    Introduced marine species in Croatian waters (Eastern Adriatic Sea)

    The Croatian part of the Adriatic Sea covers more than 35% of the total Croatian territory, which means that monitoring changes in marine ecosystems and the conservation of biodiversity are of great importance. Following global changes, Croatia is experiencing increasing problems due to the introduction of new species that include aliens (due to aquaculture activities and shipping) and species from other Mediterranean subregions that are extending their geographic range. This work provides a checklist of introduced species in Croatian waters. A total of 113 species (15 phytoplankton, 16 zooplankton, 16 macroalgae, 44 zoobenthic and 22 fish species) have been recorded in the eastern part of the Adriatic Sea, of which 61 species are alien and 52 introduced, due to climate change

    Depinning frequency in a heavily neutron-irradiated MgB2 sample

    The magnetic-field-induced variations of the microwave surface resistance have been investigated in a heavily neutron-irradiated MgB2 sample, in which the irradiation has caused the merging of the two gaps into a single value. The experimental results have been analyzed in the framework of the Coffey and Clem model. By fitting the experimental data, we have determined the field dependence of the depinning frequency, omega_0, at different values of the temperature. Although the pinning is not particularly effective, the value of omega_0 obtained at low temperatures is considerably higher than that observed in conventional low-temperature superconductors.Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures; to be published in Physica

    Temperature range of superconducting fluctuations above T_c in YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-\delta} single crystals

    Microwave absorption measurements in magnetic fields from zero up to 16 T were used to determine the temperature range of superconducting fluctuations above the superconducting critical temperature T_c in YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-\delta}. Measurements were performed on deeply underdoped, slightly underdoped, and overdoped single crystals. The temperature range of the superconducting fluctuations above T_c is determined by an experimental method which is free from arbitrary assumptions about subtracting the nonsuperconducting contributions to the total measured signal, and/or theoretical models to extract the unknown parameters. The superconducting fluctuations are detected in the ab-plane, and c-axis conductivity, by identifying the onset temperature T'. Within the sensitivity of the method, this fluctuation regime is found only within a fairly narrow region above T_c. Its width increases from 7 K in the overdoped sample (T_c = 89 K), to at most 23 K in the deeply underdoped sample (T_c = 57 K), so that T' falls well below the pseudogap temperature T*. Implications of these findings are discussed in the context of other experimental probes of superconducting fluctuations in the cuprates

    Non-resonant microwave absorption studies of superconducting MgB_2

    Non-resonant microwave absorption(NRMA) studies of superconducting MgB_2 at a frequency of 9.43 GHz in the field range -50 Gauss to 5000 Gauss are reported. The NRMA results indicate near absence of intergranular weak links. A linear temperature dependence of the lower critical field H_c1 is observed indicating a non s-wave superconductivity. However, the phase reversal of the NRMA signal which could suggest d-wave symmetry is also not observed.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figure

    Characteristic features of the temperature dependence of the surface impedance in polycrystalline MgB2_2 samples

    The real Rs(T)R_s(T) and imaginary Xs(T)X_s(T) parts of the surface impedance Zs(T)=Rs(T)+iXs(T)Z_s(T)=R_s(T)+iX_s(T) in polycrystalline MgB2_2 samples of different density with the critical temperature Tc38T_c\approx 38 K are measured at the frequency of 9.4 GHz and in the temperature range 5T<2005\le T<200 K. The normal skin-effect condition Rs(T)=Xs(T)R_s(T)=X_s(T) at TTcT\ge T_c holds only for the samples of the highest density with roughness sizes not more than 0.1 μ\mum. For such samples extrapolation T0T\to 0 of the linear at T<Tc/2T<T_c/2 temperature dependences λL(T)=Xs(T)/ωμ0\lambda_L(T)=X_s(T)/\omega\mu_0 and Rs(T)R_s(T) results in values of the London penetration depth λL(0)600\lambda_L(0)\approx 600 \AA and residual surface resistance Rres0.8R_{res}\approx 0.8 mΩ\Omega. In the entire temperature range the dependences Rs(T)R_s(T) and Xs(T)X_s(T) are well described by the modified two-fluid model.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures.     Non-linear microwave impedance of short and long Josephson Junctions

    The non-linear dependence on applied acac field (bωb_{\omega}) or current (iω% i_{\omega}) of the microwave (ac) impedance Rω+iXωR_{\omega}+iX_{\omega} of both short and long Josephson junctions is calculated under a variety of excitation conditions. The dependence on the junction width is studied, for both field symmetric (current anti-symmetric) and field anti-symmetric (current symmetric) excitation configurations.The resistance shows step-like features every time a fluxon (soliton) enters the junction, with a corresponding phase slip seen in the reactance. For finite widths the interference of fluxons leads to some interesting effects which are described. Many of these calculated results are observed in microwave impedance measurements on intrinsic and fabricated Josephson junctions in the high temperature superconductors, and new effects are suggested. When a % dc field (bdcb_{dc}) or current (idci_{dc}) is applied, interesting phase locking effects are observed in the ac impedance ZωZ_{\omega}. In particular an almost periodic dependence on the dc bias is seen similar to that observed in microwave experiments at very low dc field bias. These results are generic to all systems with a cos(ϕ)\cos (\phi) potential in the overdamped limit and subjected to an ac drive.Comment: 7 pages, 11 figure

    New Mediterranean biodiversity records (March 2016)

    In this Collective Article on “New Mediterranean Biodiversity Records”, we present additional records of species found in the Mediterranean Sea. These records refer to eight different countries mainly throughout the northern part of the basin, and include 28 species, belonging to five Phyla. The findings per country include the following species: Spain: Callinectes sapidus and Chelidonura fulvipunctata; Monaco: Aplysia dactylomela; Italy: Charybdis (Charybdis) feriata, Carcharodon carcharias, Seriola fasciata, and Siganus rivulatus; Malta: Pomacanthus asfur; Croatia: Lagocephalus sceleratus and Pomadasys incisus; Montenegro: Lagocephalus sceleratus; Greece: Amathia (Zoobotryon) verticillata, Atys macandrewii, Cerithium scabridum, Chama pacifica, Dendostrea cf. folium, Ergalatax junionae, Septifer cumingii, Syphonota geographica, Syrnola fasciata, Oxyu- richthys petersi, Scarus ghobban, Scorpaena maderensis, Solea aegyptiaca and Upeneus pori; Turkey: Lobotes surinamensis, Ruvettus pretiosus and Ophiocten abyssicolum. In the current article, the presence of Taractes rubescens (Jordan & Evermann, 1887) is recorded for the first time in the Mediterranean from Italy. The great contribution of citizen scientists in monitoring biodiversity records is reflected herein, as 10% of the authors are citizen scientists, and contributed 37.5% of the new findings.peer-reviewe
