The main aim of this paper was to analyze how medicinal gardens in secondary schools can improve teaching-learning processes in rural settings. The sample comprised 179 students (69.3% girls) from a rural public secondary school in the province of Huila (Colombia). The age of the participants ranged from 15 to 17 years with a mean of 15.86 years (SD = 0.86). Seeking school motivation strategies for rural students from a rural institution in the municipality of Guadalupe, teachers of the natural sciences designed didactic-pedagogical alternatives employing situated learning that would allow them to contribute to solving school problems and environmental issues affecting rural areas. The environmental phenomena included the loss of fertile soils and the harmful effects of the use of agrochemicals. Medicinal gardens together with situated learning activities proved a useful teaching tool in formal rural educational settings

Identifying violence against the LGTBI+ community in Catalan universities

    Get PDF
Social struggles have led to the legal recognition of the rights of LGTBI+ people in some countries. Even so, violence against LGTBI+ people is a social problem throughout the world, and has resulted in the vulnerability and victimization of the members of this group. In Spain, no research has been published to date that analyzes this problem in the university context. Considering the scarcity of studies on the identification of this type of violence in Spain, the main objective of this study was to identify violence against LGBTI+ people in Catalan universities

There are many studies that evaluate the difficulty of computer programming courses for students, at all levels. We have observed that, in our university, dropout in the introductory computer programming subject tends to be greater in those students less related to computing or telecommunications engineering. Several studies establish a correlation between students learning performance and their personal perception of competence in programming. In order to be able to act appropriately and try to prevent failure, it is essential to make a good prior diagnosis of the students. There are several surveys to assess the attitude of students to programming, however, most of these surveys are either not available or are surveys in English. In any case, before being able to use any of them, it is necessary to validate them for our cultural context. In this paper we present the adaptation and validation of the Computer Programming Attitude Scale (CPAS) instrument for university students. After performing the exploratory factor analysis, we can conclude that it presents adequate psychometric properties to be used in the Spanish university population

We present the update of the geographical distribution of the indigo snake Drymarchon corais in the Ecuadorian Amazon. The data presented was obtained from the review of historical records, collection of specimens in the field, review of specimens in zoological collections, information from field researchers, and review of open access databases. Our study shows the presence of the species in localities and in altitudinal ranges that were previously unknown. In addition, we present natural history data that allow us to expand our knowledge of the ecology of the species.

Cognitive functioning, life satisfaction, and their relationship with the financial attitudes of older individuals who participate in an active aging program

Life expectancy has increased in many countries throughout the world over recent years, leading to new challenges related to aging. A large part of the population is over 60 years old, and therefore studies that focus on financial autonomy and active aging are necessary. In this paper, we analyze the relationship between cognitive functioning and life satisfaction in relation to financial attitudes in a sample of 251 elderly adults (71% women) participating in an active aging program (M = 67.5, SD = 4.5). We used the Mini-Mental State Examination, the Satisfaction with Life scale, and a questionnaire about financial attitudes to gather data. Our results show that cognitive functioning and life satisfaction are related to certain financial attitudes. We also observed differences associated with gender, education level, and financial independence. According to our findings, life satisfaction should be taken into account when the financial attitudes of older adults are evaluated. The importance of support groups for the elderly is highlighted as well as of all those recreation and health programs, since they constitute a means of promoting well-being

    Get PDF
IntroductionSuicide is the second leading cause of death in the 15 to 29 age group worldwide, and is a severe public health problem. Adolescent and young adult individuals attend educational institutions which can play an essential role in detecting and preventing suicide. For this reason, the purpose of this research is to identify what educational institutions and agents are called into action in suicide prevention, intervention, and postvention.MethodsThe method of systematic review of the literature based on the PRISMA protocol was used. The review protocol was registered in PROSPERO (PROSPERO 2020 CRD42020189127). The systematic review yielded 66 articles published between 1990 and February 2023.ResultsThe results show that a wide variety of educational stakeholders are required to intervene for suicide prevention, interventions and postvention between primary education and college. The study describes the different programs that have been provided, the countries in which they have been implemented and the agents who have been targeted. It also identifies gaps in the research on suicide in the educational field.DiscussionOverall, educational suicide initiatives report positive effects on participants’ understanding, attitudes, and beliefs regarding suicide and suicide prevention, although some studies have expressed some caution
