Diffeomorphism classification of finite group actions on disks
AbstractIn this paper we discuss the diffeomorphism classification of finite group actions on disks. We answer the question when an action on a space M can be extended to an action on a disk such that the action is free away from M. Let the singular set consist of the points with nontrivial isotropy group. We show (under some dimension assumptions) that disks with diffeomorphic neighborhoods of the singular set can be imbedded into each other. As a consequence we find a classification of group actions on disks in terms of the neighborhood of the singular set and an element in the Whitehead group of G
Involutions on S^6 with 3-dimensional fixed point set
In this article, we classify all involutions on S^6 with 3-dimensional fixed
point set. In particular, we discuss the relation between the classification of
involutions with fixed point set a knotted 3-sphere and the classification of
free involutions on homotopy CP^3's.Comment: 23 page
Smith equivalence and finite Oliver groups with Laitinen number 0 or 1
In 1960, Paul A. Smith asked the following question. If a finite group G acts
smoothly on a sphere with exactly two fixed points, is it true that the tangent
G-modules at the two points are always isomorphic? We focus on the case G is an
Oliver group and we present a classification of finite Oliver groups G with
Laitinen number a_G = 0 or 1. Then we show that the Smith Isomorphism Question
has a negative answer and a_G > 1 for any finite Oliver group G of odd order,
and for any finite Oliver group G with a cyclic quotient of order pq for two
distinct odd primes p and q. We also show that with just one unknown case, this
question has a negative answer for any finite nonsolvable gap group G with a_G
> 1. Moreover, we deduce that for a finite nonabelian simple group G, the
answer to the Smith Isomorphism Question is affirmative if and only if a_G = 0
or 1.Comment: Published by Algebraic and Geometric Topology at

One-connectivity and finiteness of Hamiltonian -manifolds with minimal fixed sets
Let the circle act effectively in a Hamiltonian fashion on a compact
symplectic manifold . Assume that the fixed point set
has exactly two components, and , and that . We first show that , and are simply connected. Then we
show that, up to -equivariant diffeomorphism, there are finitely many such
manifolds in each dimension. Moreover, we show that in low dimensions, the
manifold is unique in a certain category. We use techniques from both areas of
symplectic geometry and geometric topology
Smooth free involution of and Smith conjecture for imbeddings of in
This paper establishes an equivalence between existence of free involutions
on and existence of involutions on with fixed point set an
imbedded , then a family of counterexamples of the Smith conjecture for
imbeddings of in are given by known result on . In
addition, this paper also shows that every smooth homotopy complex projective
3-space admits no orientation preserving smooth free involution, which answers
an open problem [Pe]. Moreover, the study of existence problem for smooth
orientation preserving involutions on is completed.Comment: 10 pages, final versio
