Aqua_Culture: Recognizing New Institutional Models for the Reactivation of Inherent Values in the Urban and Cultural Landscape of Arecibo

    Get PDF
Natural resources have dictated the sucessful development of the city of Arecibo until the dissolution of the city\u27s industrial models. This thesis aims to create a Marine Research and Educational Center that promotes the engagement between the city\u27s urban dwellers and its waterfront in a desire to recover the city\u27s valuable historical landscape while promoting new forms of social revitalization through the means of education.\u2

Does society show differential attention to researchers based on gender and field?

While not all researchers prioritize social impact, it is undeniably a crucial aspect that adds significance to their work. The objective of this paper is to explore potential gender differences in the social attention paid to researchers and to examine their association with specific fields of study. To achieve this goal, the paper analyzes four dimensions of social influence and examines three measures of social attention to researchers. The dimensions are media influence (mentions in mainstream news), political influence (mentions in public policy reports), social media influence (mentions in Twitter), and educational influence (mentions in Wikipedia). The measures of social attention to researchers are: proportion of publications with social mentions (social attention orientation), mentions per publication (level of social attention), and mentions per mentioned publication (intensity of social attention). By analyzing the rankings of authors -- for the four dimensions with the three measures in the 22 research fields of the Web of Science database -- and by using Spearman correlation coefficients, we conclude that: 1) significant differences are observed between fields; 2) the dimensions capture different and independent aspects of the social impact. Finally, we use non-parametric means comparison tests to detect gender bias in social attention. We conclude that for most fields and dimensions with enough non-zero altmetrics data, gender differences in social attention are not predominant, but are still present and vary across fields.Comment: 23 pages, 5 figures, 7 table

    Get PDF

Discovery of a massive supercluster system at z0.47z \sim 0.47

Superclusters are the largest relatively isolated systems in the cosmic web. Using the SDSS BOSS survey we search for the largest superclusters in the redshift range 0.43<z<0.710.43<z<0.71. We generate a luminosity-density field smoothed over 8h1Mpc8 h^{-1}\mathrm{Mpc} to detect the large-scale over-density regions. Each individual over-density region is defined as single supercluster in the survey. We define the superclusters in the way that they are comparable with the superclusters found in the SDSS main survey. We found a system we call the BOSS Great Wall (BGW), which consists of two walls with diameters 186 and 173 h1h^{-1}Mpc, and two other major superclusters with diameters of 64 and 91 h1h^{-1}Mpc. As a whole, this system consists of 830 galaxies with the mean redshift 0.47. We estimate the total mass to be approximately 2×1017h1M2\times10^{17}h^{-1}M_\odot. The morphology of the superclusters in the BGW system is similar to the morphology of the superclusters in the Sloan Great Wall region. The BGW is one of the most extended and massive system of superclusters yet found in the Universe.Comment: 4 pages, accepted as a letter in A&

    Get PDF
This paper presents a study of interrogative sentences in the Catalan of Barcelona, the Spanish of Tenerife in the Canary Islands, and the Galician spoken in Santiago de Compostela. After a brief acoustic description of the melody used in each language variety, the results of perception tests carried out with subjects from the three areas of study on the sentences in the corpus (each containing three pitch accents) are given, the sentences first having been synthesized and stripped of their lexical content. The results show that, although each group of subjects recognize more easily and consider more normal the sentences from their own linguistic variety, mutual intelligibilty among speakers of the Romance varieties studied is good

Variable Stars in Local Group Galaxies. IV. RR Lyrae stars in the central regions of the low-density galaxy Crater II

    Get PDF
We present a search and analysis of variable stars in the recently discovered Crater~II dwarf galaxy. Based on BB, VV, II data collected with the Isaac Newton Telescope (FoV\sim0.44 square degrees) we detected 37 variable stars, of which 34 are bone-fide RR Lyrae stars of Crater~II (28 RRab, 4 RRc, 2 RRd). We applied the metal-independent (VV, BVB-V) Period--Wesenheit relation and derived a true distance modulus (μ\mu = 20.30±\pm0.08 mag (σ\sigma=0.16 mag). Individual metallicities for RR Lyrae stars were derived by inversion of the predicted II-band Period-Luminosity relation. We find a mean metallicity of [Fe/H]=-1.64 and a standard deviation of σ[Fe/H]\sigma_{[Fe/H]} =0.21 dex, compatible with either negligible or vanishing intrinsic metallicity dispersion. The analysis of the Colour-Magnitude Diagram reveals a stark paucity of blue horizontal branch stars, at odds with other Galactic dwarfs, and globular clusters with similar metal abundances.Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publications on MNRAS.
