Core competencies of professional service providers in federally funded education programs

The purpose of this national study was to identify core competencies for administrators and other professional service providers in selected federally funded education programs. The population was administrators of Talent Search, Upward Bound, and Student Support Services projects. A proportional stratified random sample of 579 administrators received the survey; 354 responded. The usable response was 346 (59.8%). A researcher-developed instrument was revised according to advice of a national panel of experts. The instrument was piloted and again revised prior to the national survey. The overall Cronbach\u27s alpha for the instrument was .97. The 100-item questionnaire was divided into 18 core competency categories: Administration, Admissions, Advising, Curricula, Extra-curricula, Financial Aid, Follow Up and Evaluation, Grantwriting, Information, Interpersonal Skills, Leadership, Motivation, Planning, Professional Development, Public Relations, Recruitment, Teaching, and Technology

A unique solution to improve an amblyopic child’s adherence to patching

Amblyopia should be treated in early ages to have better outcomes. Stimulation of suppressed eye and depriving light stimulus to the good eye is the main principal of the amblyopia treatment. Adherence to the patching for the treatment of amblyopia in children remains challenging. This could be due to poor cooperation of child or ill-fitting patch. Younger children can be motivated to mimic cartoon figures to improve their adherence to patching. Amblyopia treatment is a team work of parents and optometrist who not only select the mode of management but improve the acceptance of child for patching.  We present a child with mild anisometropia and hypermetropia-induced esotropia and amblyopia who was non-compliant to patching. An innovative idea by the parents using a Ninja Turtle patch on the prescribed spectacle was very well accepted by the child and both esotropia and amblyopia improved within four months of the patching treatment. The vision in the affected eye improved from 20/200 to 20/20 with refractive error correction and patching. We share this low-cost child-friendly patching technique that parents invented that can be used to improve adherence to patching by young children during amblyopia therapy. New World of Gossamer Superconductivity

Since the discovery of the high-T$_{c}$ cuprate superconductor La$_{2-x}$BaCuO$_{4}$ in 1986 by Bednorz and M\"{u}ller, controversy regarding the nature or origin of this remarkable superconductivity has continued. However, d-wave superconductivity in the hole-doped cuprates, arising due to the anti-paramagnon exchange, was established around 1994. More recently we have shown that the mean field theory, like the BCS theory of superconductivity and Landau's Fermi liquid theory are adequate to describe the cuprates. The keys for this development are the facts that a)the pseudogap phase is d-wave density wave (dDW) and that the high-T$_{c}$ cuprate superconductivity is gossamer (i.e. it exists in the presence of dDW).Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure

Relation between organizational commitment and professional commitment: an exploratory study conducted with teachers

The existence of several kinds of commitments in the workplace is well known. However, there are few studies that relate these different commitments or those established by deterministic models. This study explored the relationship between organizational and professional commitment in public higher education professors according to the multidimensional perspective of Meyer and Allen (1991), based on a convenience sample of 219 teachers. The proposed models were estimated through structural equation modeling methodology. Model 1 specified a relationship of direct influence of Professional Commitment on Organizational Commitment and Model 2 established the opposite relationship of direct influence of organizational commitment on professional commitment. Both models presented a good fit to the data without statistically significant differences between them. Nevertheless, the explanatory power of Model 1 was superior to Model 2, due to the fact that it includes a larger number of determinant relationships that are statistically significant. Some Small Collections of Alpheid Shrimp from the Indian Ocean, Including Two New Species of the Genus Synalpheus

Some small collections of alpheid shrimp resulting from the participation of the United States research vessels in the International Indian Ocean Expeditions are reported: 53 species in six genera were collected, with many of the collection records extending the known range of the various species within the Indian Ocean. Two new species are described from the deeper sublittoral zone: Synalpheus cretoculatus from off the southern tip of Burma and Synalpheus somalia from the oceanic coast of Somalia near the Gulf of Aden

A new species of snapping shrimp, Alpheus randalli, which was collected in association with a goby, Amblyeleotris sp., in the Marquesas is described. A shrimp of similar coloration and association was observed in the Indian Ocean. This species is the second of the Edwardsii group reported to live in association with gobies
