    Ag nanoparticles of two different sizes (1 and 4 nm) were prepared within an apoferritin cavity by using an Ag+-loaded apoferritin as a nanoconfined environment for their construction. The initial amount of Ag' ions injected in the apoferritin cavity dictates the size of the final Ag particles. The protein shell prevents bulk aggregation of the metal particles, which renders them water soluble and extremely stable

El acuerdo de transferencia de copyright del trabajo completo es incompatible con el depósito del mismo en RIUMA.Se describe la implementación inicial de un método simplificado de grabación en directo de sesiones de clase en asignaturas de las Escuelas de Ingeniería de la Universidad de Málaga. La simplificación se logra al incorporar en la actividad diaria del aula ciertas características típicas de la grabación en diferido de mini videos docentes. En una configuración mínima se graba únicamente el audio y el video en pantalla de la clase, evitando los desafíos técnicos y las dificultades que implica la grabación de otros elementos como la pizarra.     Improving accuracy and speeding up Document Image Classification through parallel systems

    This paper presents a study showing the benefits of the EfficientNet models compared with heavier Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) in the Document Classification task, essential problem in the digitalization process of institutions. We show in the RVL-CDIP dataset that we can improve previous results with a much lighter model and present its transfer learning capabilities on a smaller in-domain dataset such as Tobacco3482. Moreover, we present an ensemble pipeline which is able to boost solely image input by combining image model predictions with the ones generated by BERT model on extracted text by OCR. We also show that the batch size can be effectively increased without hindering its accuracy so that the training process can be sped up by parallelizing throughout multiple GPUs, decreasing the computational time needed. Lastly, we expose the training performance differences between PyTorch and Tensorflow Deep Learning frameworks

    Parasites in feces of the endemic rattlesnake, Crotalus triseriatus (Serpentes: Viperidae), from Mexican highlands

    Artículo científicoThere are few studies about parasitic infections in Crotalus triseriatus (Wagler, 1830), an endemic rattlesnake from the highlands of central Mexico. This species occupies several habitats, from conserved forested regions to heavily impacted landscapes. To increase the parasitological knowledge of this reptile species without impacting populations, we obtained fecal samples of 16 rattlesnakes between 2012 and 2014 from Toluca Valley, Mexico. By using flotation technique, we found oocysts of Eimeria sp. and eggs of Capillariidae sp. The most frequent parasite was Eimeria sp. (62.5%). This study provides the first records of occurrence of parasites in reptilian feces from Mexico. Our results may be important for wildlife conservation purposes, for example, they could indicate of the population health of this species during processes of translocation

    Modeling human endometrial decidualization from the interaction between proteome and secretome

    CONTEXT: Decidualization of the human endometrium, which involves morphological and biochemical modifications of the endometrial stromal cells (ESCs), is a prerequisite for adequate trophoblast invasion and placenta formation. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate the proteome and secretome of in vitro decidualized ESCs. These data were combined with published genomic information and integrated to model the human decidualization interactome. DESIGN: Prospective experimental case-control study. SETTING: A private research foundation. PATIENTS: Sixteen healthy volunteer ovum donors. INTERVENTION: Endometrial samples were obtained, and ESCs were isolated and decidualized in vitro. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Two-dimensional difference in-gel electrophoresis, matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time-of-flight mass spectrometry, Western blot, human protein cytokine array, ELISA, and bioinformatics analysis were performed. RESULTS: The proteomic analysis revealed 60 differentially expressed proteins (36 over- and 24 underexpressed) in decidualized versus control ESCs, including known decidualization markers (cathepsin B) and new biomarkers (transglutaminase 2, peroxiredoxin 4, and the ACTB protein). In the secretomic analysis, a total of 13 secreted proteins (11 up- and 2 down-regulated) were identified, including well-recognized markers (IGF binding protein-1 and prolactin) and novel ones (myeloid progenitor inhibitory factor-1 and platelet endothelial cell adhesion molecule-1). These proteome/secretome profiles have been integrated into a decidualization interactome model. CONCLUSIONS: Proteomic and secretomic have been used as hypothesis-free approaches together with complex bioinformatics to model the human decidual interactome for the first time. We confirm previous knowledge, describe new molecules, and we have built up a model for human in vitro decidualization as invaluable tool for the diagnosis, therapy, and interpretation of biological phenomena.The participation of T.G.-G. was supported by a grant of the Ministry of Education and Science AP2007-04066 (FPU).     Assessment of Biomass Energy Potential and Forest Carbon Stocks in Biscay (Spain)

    The aim of this research is to identify, quantify and characterize the potential available forest biomass of Pinus radiata D. Don and Eucalyptus globulus Labill. across Biscay province in northern Spain. In order to do this, we have used information from the National Inventories of Spain to quantify the amount of carbon dioxide accumulated in the forests of Biscay by means of stratum-species-based forestry statistics. The total biomass and biomass fractions have been estimated using two different methods: allometric biomass equations (ABE) and biomass expansion factors (BEF). The second objective is to develop a methodology to quantify and produce a cartography of the prospective energy production of residual biomass from the most representative forest species of Biscay. For this purpose, we have used a Geographic Information System (GIS) computer tool. We have found that the stock of carbon accumulated in the main forest species in Biscay in 2014 amounts to 8.2 Tg (ABE) and 6.63 Tg (BEF) equivalent to 30 and 24.3 Tg of CO2, respectively. The quantity of forestry biomass residue (FBR) obtained has been estimated as 52,214 Mg.year(-1) dry matter.     Blockade of the Interaction of Calcineurin with FOXO in Astrocytes Protects Against Amyloid-beta-Induced Neuronal Death

    Astrocytes actively participate in neuro-inflammatory processes associated to Alzheimer's disease (AD), and other brain pathologies. We recently showed that an astrocyte-specific intracellular signaling pathway involving an interaction of the phosphatase calcineurin with the transcription factor FOXO3 is a major driver in AD-associated pathological inflammation, suggesting a potential new druggable target for this devastating disease. We have now developed decoy molecules to interfere with calcineurin/FOXO3 interactions, and tested them in astrocytes and neuronal co-cultures exposed to amyloid-beta (A beta) toxicity. We observed that interference of calcineurin/FOXO3 interactions exerts a protective action against A beta-induced neuronal death and favors the production of a set of growth factors that we hypothesize form part of a cytoprotective pathway to resolve inflammation. Furthermore, interference of the A beta-induced interaction of calcineurin with FOXO3 by decoy compounds significantly decreased amyloid-beta protein precursor (A beta PP) synthesis, reduced the A beta PP amyloidogenic pathway, resulting in lower A beta levels, and blocked the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines TNF alpha and IL-6 in astrocytes. Collectively, these data indicate that interrupting pro-inflammatory calcineurin/FOXO3 interactions in astrocytes triggered by A beta accumulation in brain may constitute an effective new therapeutic approach in AD.     Delocalization in harmonic chains with long-range correlated random masses

    We study the nature of collective excitations in harmonic chains with masses exhibiting long-range correlated disorder with power spectrum proportional to 1/kα1/k^{\alpha}, where kk is the wave-vector of the modulations on the random masses landscape. Using a transfer matrix method and exact diagonalization, we compute the localization length and participation ratio of eigenmodes within the band of allowed energies. We find extended vibrational modes in the low-energy region for α>1\alpha > 1. In order to study the time evolution of an initially localized energy input, we calculate the second moment M2(t)M_2(t) of the energy spatial distribution. We show that M2(t)M_2(t), besides being dependent of the specific initial excitation and exhibiting an anomalous diffusion for weakly correlated disorder, assumes a ballistic spread in the regime α>1\alpha>1 due to the presence of extended vibrational modes.Comment: 6 pages, 9 figure

    Os ambientes virtuais de aprendizagem podem ser compreendidos como espaços técnicos e pedagógicos de trabalho educativo. Possuem ferramentas que são utilizadas e substituem as interações do ensino presencial. Além dessa perspectiva nosso objetivo neste artigo é analisar os ambientes de aprendizagem identificando quais os elementos técnicos e pedagógicos de uma metodologia de uso desse espaço virtual, especificamente para facilitar o desenvolvimento de competências e habilidades docentes. A metodologia de pesquisa utilizada sob o enfoque qualitativo foi puramente descritiva e nos possibilitaram chegar a resultados de grande valor para o uso dos ambientes de aprendizagem, delineando uma sequência metodológica e didática de uso.Virtual environments of learning can be understood as pedagogical and technical spaces of educational work. They have tools that are used and substitute the interactions of presential education. Beyond this perspective our aim in this article is to analyze learning environments identifying which are the technical and pedagogical elements of a methodology of use of such virtual space, specifically to make the development of competences and teaching abilities easier. The methodology of research used under the qualitative approach was purely descriptive and made possible to reach valuable results for the use of learning environments, in which was delineated a methodological and didactic sequence of use
