Taking pleasure seriously: the political significance of subcultural practice
This paper demonstrates that subcultural theory continues to provide a relevant and useful analysis of youth leisure practices and their political significance in contemporary society. It achieves this by analysing the theoretical antecedents to both subcultural theory and the post-subcultural theory that followed it. It is argued that the post-subcultural turn to studying affects and everyday lives resonates deeply with the Gramscian perspective informing subcultural theory. It is thus possible to interpret post-subculturalism as augmenting rather than negating its predecessor. Deploying an analysis that combines these perspectives allows for an account of contemporary youth leisure practices that demonstrates a number of different forms of politics explicated within the paper: a politics of identity and becoming; a politics of defiance; a politics of affective solidarity and a politics of different experience. Whilst not articulated or necessarily conscious, there is a proto-politics to youth leisure that precludes it from being dismissed as entirely empty, hedonistic and consumerist. This paper demonstrates how the lens of post-subculturalism focuses on the affective spaces where this politics is most apparent and provides a means of updating subcultural theory to understand contemporary youth practices
Microbiological and molecular characteristics of carbapenemase-producing klebsiella pneumoniae endemic in a tertiary Greek hospital during 2004-2010
We report 570 carbapenemase-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae (CPKP) clinical isolates in a 1,040-bed Greek tertiary hospital during 2004 to 2010. The first CPKP (VIM-producing) was isolated in September 2004. Despite initial containment, VIM producers have become endemic since 2006. KPC-producing K. pneumoniae was first isolated in August 2007 from a patient who came from Israel, spread rapidly, and outcompeted VIM. Overall, 267 (47%) VIM-producing and 301 (53%) KPC-producing strains were isolated, including 141 (24.7%) from patients with bacteraemia. Two isolates carrying both VIM and KPC were isolated in two consecutive months in 2009, but not since. The prevalence of CPKP increased from 0% in 2003 to 38.3% in 2010 (
NELIOTA: The wide-field, high-cadence lunar monitoring system at the prime focus of the Kryoneri telescope
We present the technical specifications and first results of the ESA-funded,
lunar monitoring project "NELIOTA" (NEO Lunar Impacts and Optical TrAnsients)
at the National Observatory of Athens, which aims to determine the
size-frequency distribution of small Near-Earth Objects (NEOs) via detection of
impact flashes on the surface of the Moon. For the purposes of this project a
twin camera instrument was specially designed and installed at the 1.2 m
Kryoneri telescope utilizing the fast-frame capabilities of scientific
Complementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor detectors (sCMOS). The system provides
a wide field-of-view (17.0' 14.4') and simultaneous observations in
two photometric bands (R and I), reaching limiting magnitudes of 18.7 mag in 10
sec in both bands at a 2.5 signal-to-noise level. This makes it a unique
instrument that can be used for the detection of NEO impacts on the Moon, as
well as for any astronomy projects that demand high-cadence multicolor
observations. The wide field-of-view ensures that a large portion of the Moon
is observed, while the simultaneous, high-cadence, monitoring in two
photometric bands makes possible, for the first time, the determination of the
temperatures of the impacts on the Moon's surface and the validation of the
impact flashes from a single site. Considering the varying background level on
the Moon's surface we demonstrate that the NELIOTA system can detect NEO impact
flashes at a 2.5 signal-to-noise level of ~12.4 mag in the I-band and R-band
for observations made at low lunar phases ~0.1. We report 31 NEO impact flashes
detected during the first year of the NELIOTA campaign. The faintest flash was
at 11.24 mag in the R-band (about two magnitudes fainter than ever observed
before) at lunar phase 0.32. Our observations suggest a detection rate of events .Comment: Accepted for publication in A&
Lotus japonicus contains two distinct ENOD40 genes that are expressed in symbiotic, nonsymbiotic, and embryonic tissues
ENOD40, an early nodulin gene, has been postulated to play a significant role in legume root nodule ontogenesis, We have isolated two distinct ENOD40 genes from Lotus japonicus, The transcribed regions of the two ENOD40 genes share 65% homology, while the two promoters showed no significant homology, Both transcripts encode a putative dodecapeptide similar to that identified in other legumes forming determinate nodules, Both ENOD40 genes are coordinately expressed following inoculation of roots with Mesorhizobium loti or treatment with purified Nod factors. In the former case, mRNA accumulation could be detected up to 10 days following inoculation while in the latter case the accumulation was transient. High levels of both ENOD40 gene transcripts were found in nonsymbiotic tissues such as stems, fully developed flowers, green seed pods, and hypocotyls, A relatively lower level of both transcripts was observed in leaves, roots, and cotyledons. In situ hybridization studies revealed that, in mature nodules, transcripts of both ENOD40 genes accumulate in the nodule vascular system; additionally, in young seed pods strong signal is observed in the ovule, particularly In the phloem and epithelium, as well as in globular stage embryos.Animal science
Ionization Probabilities through ultra-intense Fields in the extreme Limit
We continue our investigation concerning the question of whether atomic bound
states begin to stabilize in the ultra-intense field limit. The pulses
considered are essentially arbitrary, but we distinguish between three
situations. First the total classical momentum transfer is non-vanishing,
second not both the total classical momentum transfer and the total classical
displacement are vanishing together with the requirement that the potential has
a finite number of bound states and third both the total classical momentum
transfer and the total classical displacement are vanishing. For the first two
cases we rigorously prove, that the ionization probability tends to one when
the amplitude of the pulse tends to infinity and the pulse shape remains fixed.
In the third case the limit is strictly smaller than one. This case is also

Multiphoton detachment of electrons from negative ions
A simple analytical solution for the problem of multiphoton detachment from
negative ions by a linearly polarized laser field is found. It is valid in the
wide range of intensities and frequencies of the field, from the perturbation
theory to the tunneling regime, and is applicable to the excess-photon as well
as near-threshold detachment. Practically, the formulae are valid when the
number of photons is greater than two. They produce the total detachment rates,
relative intensities of the excess-photon peaks, and photoelectron angular
distributions for the hydrogen and halogen negative ions, in agreement with
those obtained in other, more numerically involved calculations in both
perturbative and non-perturbative regimes. Our approach explains the extreme
sensitivity of the multiphoton detachment probability to the asymptotic
behaviour of the bound-state wave function. Rapid oscillations in the angular
dependence of the -photon detachment probability are shown to arise due to
interference of the two classical trajectories which lead to the same final
state after the electron emerges at the opposite sides of the atom when the

Probing the diabetes and colorectal cancer relationship using gene – environment interaction analyses
BackgroundDiabetes is an established risk factor for colorectal cancer. However, the mechanisms underlying this relationship still require investigation and it is not known if the association is modified by genetic variants. To address these questions, we undertook a genome-wide gene-environment interaction analysis.MethodsWe used data from 3 genetic consortia (CCFR, CORECT, GECCO; 31,318 colorectal cancer cases/41,499 controls) and undertook genome-wide gene-environment interaction analyses with colorectal cancer risk, including interaction tests of genetics(G)xdiabetes (1-degree of freedom; d.f.) and joint testing of Gxdiabetes, G-colorectal cancer association (2-d.f. joint test) and G-diabetes correlation (3-d.f. joint test).ResultsBased on the joint tests, we found that the association of diabetes with colorectal cancer risk is modified by loci on chromosomes 8q24.11 (rs3802177, SLC30A8 - ORAA: 1.62, 95% CI: 1.34-1.96; ORAG: 1.41, 95% CI: 1.30-1.54; ORGG: 1.22, 95% CI: 1.13-1.31; p-value(3-d.f.): 5.46 x 10(-11)) and 13q14.13 (rs9526201, LRCH1 - ORGG: 2.11, 95% CI: 1.56-2.83; ORGA: 1.52, 95% CI: 1.38-1.68; ORAA: 1.13, 95% CI: 1.06-1.21; p-value(2-d.f.): 7.84 x 10(-09)).DiscussionThese results suggest that variation in genes related to insulin signaling (SLC30A8) and immune function (LRCH1) may modify the association of diabetes with colorectal cancer risk and provide novel insights into the biology underlying the diabetes and colorectal cancer relationship
