    A First Look at the Abundance Pattern -- O/H, C/O, Ne/O, and Fe/O -- in z>7z>7 Galaxies with JWST/NIRSpec

    We analyze the rest-frame near-UV and optical nebular spectra of three z > 7 galaxies from the Early Release Observations taken with the Near-Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) on the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). These three high-z galaxies show the detection of several strong-emission nebular lines, including the temperature-sensitive [O III] λ\lambda4363 line, allowing us to directly determine the nebular conditions and gas-phase abundances for O/H, C/O, Ne/O, and Fe/O. We derive O/H abundances and ionization parameters that are generally consistent with other recent analyses. The lowest-mass galaxy has a large O/H uncertainty, which as a significant effect on anchoring the mass-metallicity relationship (i.e., slope) and tests of its redshift evolution. We also detect the C III] λ\lambdaλ\lambda1907,1909 emission in a z > 8 galaxy from which we determine the most distant C/O abundance to date. This valuable detection provides the first test of C/O redshift evolution out to high-redshift. For neon, we use the high-ionization [Ne III] λ\lambda3869 line to measure the first Ne/O abundances at z>7, finding no evolution in this α\alpha-element ratio. To investigate the Fe abundance, we explore the tentative detection of weak [Fe II] and [Fe III] lines in a z>8 galaxy, which would indicate a rapid build up of metals. Importantly, we demonstrate that properly flux-calibrated and higher S/N spectra are crucial to robustly determine the abundance pattern in z>7 galaxies with NIRSpec/JWST.Comment: Submitted to The Astrophysical Journal Letters.     Scary Barbie: An Extremely Energetic, Long-Duration Tidal Disruption Event Candidate Without a Detected Host Galaxy at z = 0.995

    We report multi-wavelength observations and characterization of the ultraluminous transient AT 2021lwx (ZTF20abrbeie; aka ``Barbie'') identified in the alert stream of the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) using a Recommender Engine For Intelligent Transient Tracking (REFITT) filter on the ANTARES alert broker. From a spectroscopically measured redshift of 0.995, we estimate a peak observed pseudo-bolometric luminosity of log (Lmax/[erg/s]_{\text{max}} / [\text{erg}/\text{s}]) = 45.7 from slowly fading ztf-g\it{g} and ztf-rr light curves spanning over 1000 observer-frame days. The host galaxy is not detected in archival Pan-STARRS observations (g>23.3g > 23.3 mag), implying a lower limit to the outburst amplitude of more than 5 mag relative to the quiescent host galaxy. Optical spectra from Lick and Keck Observatories exhibit strong emission lines with narrow cores from the H Balmer series and ultraviolet semi-forbidden lines of Si III] λ\lambda1892, C III] λ\lambda1909, and C II] λ\lambda2325. Typical nebular lines in AGN spectra from ions such as [O II] and [O III] are not detected. These spectral features, along with the smooth light curve that is unlike most AGN flaring activity, and the luminosity that exceeds any observed or theorized supernova, lead us to conclude that AT 2021lwx is most likely an extreme tidal disruption event (TDE). Modeling of ZTF photometry with MOSFiT suggests that the TDE was between a 14M\approx 14 M_{\odot} star and a supermassive black hole of mass MBHM_{\text{BH}} \sim 108M10^{8} M_{\odot}. Continued monitoring of the still-evolving light curve along with deep imaging of the field once AT 2021lwx has faded can test this hypothesis and potentially detect the host galaxy.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures, 1 Table; Version as published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters.     Background Findings from the RESTART trial suggest that starting antiplatelet therapy might reduce the risk of recurrent symptomatic intracerebral haemorrhage compared with avoiding antiplatelet therapy. Brain imaging features of intracerebral haemorrhage and cerebral small vessel diseases (such as cerebral microbleeds) are associated with greater risks of recurrent intracerebral haemorrhage.     The Physical Conditions of Emission-Line Galaxies at Cosmic Dawn from JWST/NIRSpec Spectroscopy in the SMACS 0723 Early Release Observations

    We present rest-frame optical emission-line flux ratio measurements for five z>5z>5 galaxies observed by the JWST Near-Infared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) in the SMACS 0723 Early Release Observations. We add several quality-control and post-processing steps to the NIRSpec pipeline reduction products in order to ensure reliable relative flux calibration of emission lines that are closely separated in wavelength, despite the uncertain \textit{absolute} spectrophotometry of the current version of the reductions. Compared to z3z\sim3 galaxies in the literature, the z>5z>5 galaxies have similar [OIII]λ\lambda5008/Hβ\beta ratios, similar [OIII]λ\lambda4364/Hγ\gamma ratios, and higher (\sim0.5 dex) [NeIII]λ\lambda3870/[OII]λ\lambda3728 ratios. We compare the observations to MAPPINGS V photoionization models and find that the measured [NeIII]λ\lambda3870/[OII]λ\lambda3728, [OIII]λ\lambda4364/Hγ\gamma, and [OIII]λ\lambda5008/Hβ\beta emission-line ratios are consistent with an interstellar medium that has very high ionization (log(Q)89\log(Q) \simeq 8-9, units of cm~s1^{-1}), low metallicity (Z/Z0.2Z/Z_\odot \lesssim 0.2), and very high pressure (log(P/k)89\log(P/k) \simeq 8-9, units of cm3^{-3}). The combination of [OIII]λ\lambda4364/Hγ\gamma and [OIII]λ\lambda(4960+5008)/Hβ\beta line ratios indicate very high electron temperatures of 4.1<log(Te/K)<4.44.1<\log(T_e/{\rm K})<4.4, further implying metallicities of Z/Z0.2Z/Z_\odot \lesssim 0.2 with the application of low-redshift calibrations for ``TeT_e-based'' metallicities. These observations represent a tantalizing new view of the physical conditions of the interstellar medium in galaxies at cosmic dawn.Comment: Accepted for publication in AAS Journals. 14 pages, 6 figures, 3 table

    Paternity of Subordinates Raises Cooperative Effort in Cichlids

    Background In cooperative breeders, subordinates generally help a dominant breeding pair to raise offspring. Parentage studies have shown that in several species subordinates can participate in reproduction. This suggests an important role of direct fitness benefits for cooperation, particularly where groups contain unrelated subordinates. In this situation parentage should influence levels of cooperation. Here we combine parentage analyses and detailed behavioural observations in the field to study whether in the highly social cichlid Neolamprologus pulcher subordinates participate in reproduction and if so, whether and how this affects their cooperative care, controlling for the effect of kinship. Methodology/Principal Findings We show that: (i) male subordinates gained paternity in 27.8% of all clutches and (ii) if they participated in reproduction, they sired on average 11.8% of young. Subordinate males sharing in reproduction showed more defence against experimentally presented egg predators compared to subordinates not participating in reproduction, and they tended to stay closer to the breeding shelter. No effects of relatedness between subordinates and dominants (to mid-parent, dominant female or dominant male) were detected on parentage and on helping behaviour. Conclusions/Significance This is the first evidence in a cooperatively breeding fish species that the helping effort of male subordinates may depend on obtained paternity, which stresses the need to consider direct fitness benefits in evolutionary studies of helping behaviour

    Genome-wide association meta-analysis in 269,867 individuals identifies new genetic and functional links to intelligence

    Intelligence is highly heritable(1) and a major determinant of human health and well-being(2). Recent genome-wide meta-analyses have identified 24 genomic loci linked to variation in intelligence3-7, but much about its genetic underpinnings remains to be discovered. Here, we present a large-scale genetic association study of intelligence (n = 269,867), identifying 205 associated genomic loci (190 new) and 1,016 genes (939 new) via positional mapping, expression quantitative trait locus (eQTL) mapping, chromatin interaction mapping, and gene-based association analysis. We find enrichment of genetic effects in conserved and coding regions and associations with 146 nonsynonymous exonic variants. Associated genes are strongly expressed in the brain, specifically in striatal medium spiny neurons and hippocampal pyramidal neurons. Gene set analyses implicate pathways related to nervous system development and synaptic structure. We confirm previous strong genetic correlations with multiple health-related outcomes, and Mendelian randomization analysis results suggest protective effects of intelligence for Alzheimer's disease and ADHD and bidirectional causation with pleiotropic effects for schizophrenia. These results are a major step forward in understanding the neurobiology of cognitive function as well as genetically related neurological and psychiatric disorders.Peer reviewe

    Rehabilitation versus surgical reconstruction for non-acute anterior cruciate ligament injury (ACL SNNAP): a pragmatic randomised controlled trial

    BackgroundAnterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture is a common debilitating injury that can cause instability of the knee. We aimed to investigate the best management strategy between reconstructive surgery and non-surgical treatment for patients with a non-acute ACL injury and persistent symptoms of instability.MethodsWe did a pragmatic, multicentre, superiority, randomised controlled trial in 29 secondary care National Health Service orthopaedic units in the UK. Patients with symptomatic knee problems (instability) consistent with an ACL injury were eligible. We excluded patients with meniscal pathology with characteristics that indicate immediate surgery. Patients were randomly assigned (1:1) by computer to either surgery (reconstruction) or rehabilitation (physiotherapy but with subsequent reconstruction permitted if instability persisted after treatment), stratified by site and baseline Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score—4 domain version (KOOS4). This management design represented normal practice. The primary outcome was KOOS4 at 18 months after randomisation. The principal analyses were intention-to-treat based, with KOOS4 results analysed using linear regression. This trial is registered with ISRCTN, ISRCTN10110685, and ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT02980367.FindingsBetween Feb 1, 2017, and April 12, 2020, we recruited 316 patients. 156 (49%) participants were randomly assigned to the surgical reconstruction group and 160 (51%) to the rehabilitation group. Mean KOOS4 at 18 months was 73·0 (SD 18·3) in the surgical group and 64·6 (21·6) in the rehabilitation group. The adjusted mean difference was 7·9 (95% CI 2·5–13·2; p=0·0053) in favour of surgical management. 65 (41%) of 160 patients allocated to rehabilitation underwent subsequent surgery according to protocol within 18 months. 43 (28%) of 156 patients allocated to surgery did not receive their allocated treatment. We found no differences between groups in the proportion of intervention-related complications.InterpretationSurgical reconstruction as a management strategy for patients with non-acute ACL injury with persistent symptoms of instability was clinically superior and more cost-effective in comparison with rehabilitation management

    Genomic investigations of unexplained acute hepatitis in children

    Since its first identification in Scotland, over 1,000 cases of unexplained paediatric hepatitis in children have been reported worldwide, including 278 cases in the UK1. Here we report an investigation of 38 cases, 66 age-matched immunocompetent controls and 21 immunocompromised comparator participants, using a combination of genomic, transcriptomic, proteomic and immunohistochemical methods. We detected high levels of adeno-associated virus 2 (AAV2) DNA in the liver, blood, plasma or stool from 27 of 28 cases. We found low levels of adenovirus (HAdV) and human herpesvirus 6B (HHV-6B) in 23 of 31 and 16 of 23, respectively, of the cases tested. By contrast, AAV2 was infrequently detected and at low titre in the blood or the liver from control children with HAdV, even when profoundly immunosuppressed. AAV2, HAdV and HHV-6 phylogeny excluded the emergence of novel strains in cases. Histological analyses of explanted livers showed enrichment for T cells and B lineage cells. Proteomic comparison of liver tissue from cases and healthy controls identified increased expression of HLA class 2, immunoglobulin variable regions and complement proteins. HAdV and AAV2 proteins were not detected in the livers. Instead, we identified AAV2 DNA complexes reflecting both HAdV-mediated and HHV-6B-mediated replication. We hypothesize that high levels of abnormal AAV2 replication products aided by HAdV and, in severe cases, HHV-6B may have triggered immune-mediated hepatic disease in genetically and immunologically predisposed children
