Regulatory Regime: Canada-Newfoundland/ Nova Scotia Offshore Petroleum Board Issues
This article identifies and comments on some of the issues which may be of interest respecting petroleum operations in the Newfoundland and Nova Scotia offshore areas. An emphasis has been placed on identifying some of the issues from an operational context and from a regulator\u27s perspective, with some legal analysis provided where appropriate

Facilitating Pre-Service Teachers to Engage Emergent Bilinguals in Productive Struggle
This study utilized a multiple case study with qualitative research to examine how Pre-service teachers (PSTs) might engage Emergent Bilinguals (EBs) in productive struggle—grappling to solve problems (Warshauer, 2015). The researchers created a rubric based on Warshauer’s (2015) case study to record the types of questions PSTs asked as they tutored fourth grade EBs. Warshauer (2015) claimed PSTs should allow students more wait time and ask questions. She referred to such questions as affordance and probing guidance, which facilitates productive struggle. In order to discover more about the PSTs’ thinking, the researchers interviewed the PSTs before and after their first, third, and seventh lesson. The researchers’ findings are that the PSTs struggled to incorporate more affordance and probing guidance-based questions as the semester progressed. However, PSTs use of telling based questions decreased during the semester. Another finding was two of the EBs spoke only English at the beginning of the semester, but later used code switching during the lessons. Perhaps the students felt more comfortable with their surroundings, and speaking in Spanish helped facilitate them to engage in productive struggle. Furthermore, PSTs utilized culturally relevant teaching strategies during their lessons and created an environment to encourage positive mindsets for learning mathematics. Implications are teacher educators should teach PSTs how to engage all students in productive struggle
The AuScope Project and Trans-Tasman VLBI
Three 12-meter radio telescopes are being built in Australia (the AuScope project) and one in New Zealand. These facilities will be fully-equipped for undertaking S and X-band geodetic VLBI observations and correlation will take place on a software correlator (part of the AuScope project). All sites are equipped with permanent GPS receivers to provide co-location of several space geodetic techniques. The following scientific tasks of geodesy and astrometry are considered. 1. Improvement and densification of the International Celestial Reference Frame in the southern hemisphere; 2. Improvement of the International Terrestrial Reference Frame in the region; 3. Measurement of intraplate deformation of the Australian tectonic plate
Dental and Periodontal Health in Acute Intermittent Porphyria
In the inherited metabolic disorder acute intermittent porphyria (AIP), high sugar intake
prevents porphyric attacks due to the glucose effect and the following high insulin levels that
may lower AIP disease activity. Insulin resistance is a known risk factor for periodontitis and
sugar changes diabetogenic hormones and affects dental health. We hypothesized differences in
homeostasis model assessment (HOMA) scores for insulin resistance in AIP cases vs. controls and in
those with periodontitis. Our aim was to systematically study dental health in AIP as poor dental
health was previously only described in case reports. Further, we aimed to examine if poor dental
health and kidney failure might worsen AIP as chronic inflammation and kidney failure might
increase disease activity. In 47 AIP cases and 47 matched controls, X-rays and physical examination
of clinical attachment loss (CAL), probing pocket depth (PPD), and decayed missing filled teeth
(DMFT) were performed. Dietary intake was evaluated through a diet logbook. Plasma cytokines
and diabetogenic hormones were measured using multiplex technology and urine porphobilinogen
and kidney and liver function by routine methods. An excel spreadsheet from the University of
Oxford was used to estimate HOMA scores; beta cell function, HOMA%B (%B), insulin sensitivity,
HOMA%S (%S), and insulin resistance HOMA-IR (IR), based on glucose and plasma (P) C-peptide.
The Wilcoxon matched-pairs signed rank test, the Mann–Whitney U-test, and Spearman’s nonparametric correlation were used. Insulin (p = 0.007) and C-peptide (p = 0.006) were higher in the AIP
cases with periodontitis versus those without. In AIP patients, the liver fibrosis index 4 correlated
with DMFT (p < 0.001) and CAL ≥4 mm (p = 0.006); the estimated glomerular filtration rate correlated
with DMFT (p < 0.001) and CAL ≥4 mm (p = 0.02). CAL ≥4 mm was correlated with chemokine
ligand 11 and interleukin (IL)-13 (p = 0.04 for both), and PPD >5 mm was correlated with plasminogen
activator inhibitor-1 (p = 0.003) and complement component 3 (p = 0.02). In conclusion, dental health
in AIP cases was correlated with insulin resistance, inflammatory markers, and biomarkers of kidney
and liver function, demonstrating that organ damage in the kidney and liver are associated with
poorer dental health

Wrist rotations about one or two axes affect maximum wrist strength
© 2015 Elsevier Ltd and The Ergonomics Society. Most wrist strength studies evaluate strength about one axis, and postural deviations about that same axis. The purpose of this study was to determine if wrist posture deviations about one axis (e.g. flexion/extension), or two axes (e.g. flexion/extension and pronation/supination), affect the strength about another axis (e.g. ulnar deviation). A custom-built instrumented handle was used to measure maximum static isometric torque exertions at 18 wrist postures (combinations of flexion/extension, radial/ulnar deviation, and pronation/supination). Ulnar deviation torques were highest when the wrist was in neutral. This pattern was not maintained for the other torque directions; the generated torque tended to be highest when the wrist posture was not neutral. The effects were similar for male and female subjects, although male subjects exerted significantly larger torques in all directions. This study illustrates that there is a complex relationship between wrist posture and maximal wrist torques
