Wavefront curvature sensing for the human eye
In this paper we present a curvature wavefront sensor for the eye. The layout proposed is novel, whilst the algorithm used has been adapted from previously published work [Roddier, F.; Roddier, C. Appl. Opt. 1991, 30, 1325–1327]. The design of the set-up incorporates two field lenses that, together with a beam separator, define the distance Δz between the two sampled planes. We present a feasibility study to use this particular combination of optical configuration and retrieval algorithm in the eye. We present calibration curves and results from three real eyes
Determining R-parity violating parameters from neutrino and LHC data
In supersymmetric models neutrino data can be explained by R-parity violating
operators which violate lepton number by one unit. The so called bilinear model
can account for the observed neutrino data and predicts at the same time
several decay properties of the lightest supersymmetric particle. In this paper
we discuss the expected precision to determine these parameters by combining
neutrino and LHC data and discuss the most important observables. We show that
one can expect a rather accurate determination of the underlying R-parity
parameters assuming mSUGRA relations between the R-parity conserving ones and
discuss briefly also the general MSSM as well as the expected accuracies in
case of a prospective e+ e- linear collider. An important observation is that
several parameters can only be determined up to relative signs or more
generally relative phases.Comment: 13 pages, 13 figure
R-parity violation in SU(5)
We show that judiciously chosen R-parity violating terms in the minimal
renormalizable supersymmetric SU(5) are able to correct all the
phenomenologically wrong mass relations between down quarks and charged
leptons. The model can accommodate neutrino masses as well. One of the most
striking consequences is a large mixing between the electron and the Higgsino.
We show that this can still be in accord with data in some regions of the
parameter space and possibly falsified in future experiments.Comment: 30 pages, 1 figure. Revised version. To appear in JHE
LHC Discovery Potential for Non-Standard Higgs Bosons in the 3b Channel
In a variety of well motivated models, such as two Higgs Doublet Models
(2HDMs) and the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM), there are neutral
Higgs bosons that have significantly enhanced couplings to b-quarks and tau
leptons in comparison to those of the SM Higgs. These so called non-standard
Higgs bosons could be copiously produced at the LHC in association with b
quarks, and subsequently decay into b-quark pairs. However, this production
channel suffers from large irreducible QCD backgrounds. We propose a new search
strategy for non-standard neutral Higgs bosons at the 7 TeV LHC in the 3b's
final state topology. We perform a simulation of the signal and backgrounds,
using state of the art tools and methods for different sets of selection cuts,
and conclude that neutral Higgs bosons with couplings to b-quarks of about 0.3
or larger, and masses up to 400 GeV, could be seen with a luminosity of 30
fb^{-1}. In the case of the MSSM we also discuss the complementarity between
the 3b channel and the inclusive tau pair channel in exploring the
supersymmetric parameter space.Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures, 4 tables, references added, published versio
Doom and Boom on a Resilient Reef: Climate Change, Algal Overgrowth and Coral Recovery
Background: Coral reefs around the world are experiencing large-scale degradation, largely due to global climate change, overfishing, diseases and eutrophication. Climate change models suggest increasing frequency and severity of warming-induced coral bleaching events, with consequent increases in coral mortality and algal overgrowth. Critically, the recovery of damaged reefs will depend on the reversibility of seaweed blooms, generally considered to depend on grazing of the seaweed, and replenishment of corals by larvae that successfully recruit to damaged reefs. These processes usually take years to decades to bring a reef back to coral dominance
Revealing the active phase of copper during the electroreduction of CO2 in aqueous electrolyte by correlating in situ x-ray spectroscopy and in situ electron microscopy
The variation in the morphology and electronic structure of copper during the electroreduction of CO2 into valuable hydrocarbons and alcohols was revealed by combining in situ surface- and bulk-sensitive X-ray spectroscopies with electrochemical scanning electron microscopy. These experiments proved that the electrified interface surface and near-surface are dominated by reduced copper. The selectivity to the formation of the key C–C bond is enhanced at higher cathodic potentials as a consequence of increased copper metallicity. In addition, the reduction of the copper oxide electrode and oxygen loss in the lattice reconstructs the electrode to yield a rougher surface with more uncoordinated sites, which controls the dissociation barrier of water and CO2. Thus, according to these results, copper oxide species can only be stabilized kinetically under CO2 reduction reaction conditions
High 1,4-syn-induction in the addition of chiral allyltrichlorostannanes to chiral aldehydes
Chiral and achiral allyltrichlorostannanes reacted with chiral aldehydes to give the corresponding homoallylic alcohols with good to high diastereoselectivities. This approach has been applied to the synthesis of hydroxyethylene dipeptide isosteres L-682, 679, L-684,414, L-685,434 and L-685,458.1024026
Superconformal Flavor Simplified
A simple explanation of the flavor hierarchies can arise if matter fields
interact with a conformal sector and different generations have different
anomalous dimensions under the CFT. However, in the original study by Nelson
and Strassler many supersymmetric models of this type were considered to be
'incalculable' because the R-charges were not sufficiently constrained by the
superpotential. We point out that nearly all such models are calculable with
the use of a-maximization. Utilizing this, we construct the simplest
vector-like flavor models and discuss their viability. A significant constraint
on these models comes from requiring that the visible gauge couplings remain
perturbative throughout the conformal window needed to generate the
hierarchies. However, we find that there is a small class of simple flavor
models that can evade this bound.Comment: 43 pages, 1 figure; V3: small corrections and clarifications,

Bilinear R-parity violation with flavor symmetry
Bilinear R-parity violation (BRPV) provides the simplest intrinsically
supersymmetric neutrino mass generation scheme. While neutrino mixing
parameters can be probed in high energy accelerators, they are unfortunately
not predicted by the theory. Here we propose a model based on the discrete
flavor symmetry with a single R-parity violating parameter, leading to
(i) correct Cabbibo mixing given by the Gatto-Sartori-Tonin formula, and a
successful unification-like b-tau mass relation, and (ii) a correlation between
the lepton mixing angles and in agreement with
recent neutrino oscillation data, as well as a (nearly) massless neutrino,
leading to absence of neutrinoless double beta decay.Comment: 16 pages, 3 figures. Extended version, as published in JHE
Revealing the footprints of squark gluino production through Higgs search experiments at the Large Hadron Collider at 7 TeV and 14 TeV
The invariant mass distribution of the di-photons from the decay of the
lighter scalar Higgs boson(h) to be carefully measured by dedicated h search
experiments at the LHC may be distorted by the di-photons associated with the
squark-gluino events with much larger cross sections in Gauge Mediated
Supersymmetry Breaking (GMSB) models. This distortion if observed by the
experiments at the Large Hadron Collider at 7 TeV or 14 TeV, would disfavour
not only the standard model but various two Higgs doublet models with
comparable h - masses and couplings but without a sector consisting of new
heavy particles decaying into photons. The minimal GMSB (mGMSB) model
constrained by the mass bound on h from LEP and that on the lightest neutralino
from the Tevatron, produce negligible effects. But in the currently popular
general GMSB(GGMSB) models the tail of the above distribution may show
statistically significant excess of events even in the early stages of the LHC
experiments with integrated luminosity insufficient for the discovery of h. We
illustrate the above points by introducing several benchmark points in various
GMSB models - minimal as well as non-minimal. The same conclusion follows from
a detailed parameter scan in a simplified GGMSB model recently employed by the
CMS collaboration to interpret their searches in the di-photon + \etslash
channel. Other observables like the effective mass distribution of the
di-photon + X events may also reveal the presence of new heavy particles beyond
the Higgs sector. The contamination of the h mass peak and simple remedies are
also discussed.Comment: 23 pages, 7 figures, title and organization of the paper is changed,
detailed parameter scan in a simplified GGMSB model is added, conclusions and
old numerical results remain unchange
