    An agent-based approach to modelling driver route choice behaviour under the influence of real-time information

    This paper presents an agent-based approach to modelling individual driver behaviour under the influence of real-time traffic information. The driver behaviour models developed in this study are based on a behavioural survey of drivers which was conducted on a congested commuting corridor in Brisbane, Australia. Commuters' responses to travel information were analysed and a number of discrete choice models were developed to determine the factors influencing drivers' behaviour and their propensity to change route and adjust travel patterns. Based on the results obtained from the behavioural survey, the agent behaviour parameters which define driver characteristics, knowledge and preferences were identified and their values determined. A case study implementing a simple agent-based route choice decision model within a microscopic traffic simulation tool is also presented. Driver-vehicle units (DVUs) were modelled as autonomous software components that can each be assigned a set of goals to achieve and a database of knowledge comprising certain beliefs, intentions and preferences concerning the driving task. Each DVU provided route choice decision-making capabilities, based on perception of its environment, that were similar to the described intentions of the driver it represented. The case study clearly demonstrated the feasibility of the approach and the potential to develop more complex driver behavioural dynamics based on the belief-desire-intention agent architecture.     Comparative evaluation of microscopic car-following behavior

    Microscopic traffic-simulation tools are increasingly being applied to evaluate the impacts of a wide variety of intelligent transport, systems (ITS) applications and other dynamic problems that are difficult to solve using traditional analytical models. The accuracy of a traffic-simulation system depends highly on the quality of the traffic-flow model at its core, with the two main critical components being the car-following and lane-changing models. This paper presents findings from a comparative evaluation of car-following behavior in a number of traffic simulators [advanced interactive microscopic simulator for urban and nonurban networks (AIMSUN), parallel microscopic simulation (PARAMICS), and Verkehr in Statiten-simulation (VISSIM)]. The car-following algorithms used in these simulators have been developed from a variety of theoretical backgrounds and are reported to have been calibrated on a number of different data sets. Very few independent studies have attempted to evaluate the performance of the underlying algorithms based on the same data set. The results reported in this study are based on a car-following experiment that used instrumented vehicles to record the speed and relative distance between follower and leader vehicles on a one-lane road. The experiment was replicated in each tool and the simulated car-following behavior was compared to the field data using a number of error tests. The results showed lower error values for the Gipps-based models implemented in AIMSUN and similar error values for the psychophysical spacing models used in VISSIM and PARAMICS. A qualitative drift and goal-seeking behavior test, which essentially shows how the distance headway between leader and follower vehicles should oscillate around a stable distance, also confirmed the findings

    A Reactive Agent-based Neural Network Car Following Model

    This paper presented a novel approach to develop car following models using reactive agent techniques for mapping perceptions to actions. The results showed that the model outperformed the Gipps and Psychophysical family of car following models. The standing of this work is highlighted by its acceptance and publication in the proceedings of the International IEEE Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), which is now recognised as the premier international conference on ITS. The paper acceptance rate to this conference was 67 percent. The standing of this paper is also evidenced by its listing in international databases like Ei Inspec and IEEE Xplore.     An agent-based approach to assess drivers’ interaction with pre-trip information systems.

    This article reports on the practical use of a multi-agent microsimulation framework to address the issue of assessing drivers’ responses to pretrip information systems. The population of drivers is represented as a community of autonomous agents, and travel demand results from the decision-making deliberation performed by each individual of the population as regards route and departure time. A simple simulation scenario was devised, where pretrip information was made available to users on an individual basis so that its effects at the aggregate level could be observed. The simulation results show that the overall performance of the system is very likely affected by exogenous information, and these results are ascribed to demand formation and network topology. The expressiveness offered by cognitive approaches based on predicate logics, such as the one used in this research, appears to be a promising approximation to fostering more complex behavior modelling, allowing us to represent many of the mental aspects involved in the deliberation process

    Differentiation of the Xanthomonas hortorum – Xanthomonas hydrangeae species complex using sensitive and selective LAMP assays

    Related publications: https://doi.org/10.1099/ijsem.0.005163, https://doi.org/10.1002/ndr2.12008The seven pathovars of Xanthomonas hortorum and Xanthomonas hydrangeae, referred to as the X. hortorum – X. hydrangeae species complex, cause disease on a multitude of plants, including crops, ornamental and wild plants. Cross-pathogenicity was proven for some of the strains within this species complex. It is thus important to have highly specific and fast diagnostics methods for members of the X. hortorum – X. hydrangeae species complex. A comparative genomic analysis was conducted for representative members within the complex to identify singletons for use as genomic targets for the assays. Seven loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) diagnostics assays were developed for the detection of six clades within the X. hortorum – X. hydrangeae species complex, in addition to one assay specific for the entire species complex. Primer sets were tested on a set of 62 reference strains. The primer sets amplified their respective targets within 15 minutes. Based on the reference set, all assays had a sensitivity, specificity, and efficiency of 100%. The assays were used on a validation set of 60 strains. According to the LAMP results, out of the 60 strains, 39 strains were assigned to one of the clades within the complex, 9 were assigned to the complex but to yet undefined clades within the complex, and 12 strains were previously misclassified as X. hortorum since their genomic DNA did not yield amplification with any of the assays. The seven genome-based assays are promising for use as diagnostic tools for various members within the X. hortorum – X. hydrangeae species complex, and for assigning new and historical isolates to this complex

    Description Avec le vieillissement de la population, survient la démence dans la population de personnes âgées. Objectif. L’objectif de cette étude était d’estimer la prévalence de cette affection dans une population de personnes âgées sénégalaises. Méthodes Par une étude transversale qui s’est déroulée du 01 mars 2004 au 31 décembre 2005, des personnes âgées de 55 ans et plus venant consulter pour un problème de santé au Centre Médico-Social et Universitaire de l’IPRES (Sénégal) ont été évaluées sur le plan clinique et neuropsychologique. Des données sur les caractéristiques sociodémographiques, les antécédents médico-chirurgicaux et familiaux, le mode de vie, le réseau social ont été collectées à l’aide d’un questionnaire structuré avec des réponses fermées. Résultat La population à l’étude était composée de 872 personnes. Elles avaient un âge moyen de 67,2 ans ± 7,5.Elles étaient de sexe masculin (62,6%), mariées (79%), non instruites (50,7%). Dans les antécédents, l’HTA, le diabète, les affections respiratoires, les affections rhumatismales, la cataracte et les troublesdigestifs étaient les plus fréquents. Le tabagisme et l’alcoolisme était faible alors que la marche constituait la principale activité physique. Les personnes âgées vivaient en famille avec un bon réseau social.Cinquante huit (58) personnes ont présenté une démence (6,6%). La prévalence de la maladie variait de manière significative avec l’âge et l’instruction. Conclusion Ce résultat confirme que la prévalence de la démence varie en fonction de l’âge et de l’instruction de la personne âgée

    Xanthomonas hydrangeae sp. nov., a novel plant pathogen isolated from Hydrangea arborescens

    This paper describes a novel species isolated in 2011 and 2012 from nursery-grown Hydrangea arborescens cultivars in Flanders, Belgium. After 4 days at 28 °C, the strains yielded yellow, round, convex and mucoid colonies. Pathogenicity of the strains was confirmed on its isolation host, as well as on Hydrangea quercifolia. Analysis using MALDI-TOF MS identified the Hydrangea strains as belonging to the genus Xanthomonas but excluded them from the species Xanthomonas hortorum. A phylogenetic tree based on gyrB confirmed the close relation to X. hortorum. Three fatty acids were dominant in the Hydrangea isolates: anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 0 and summed feature 3 (C16 : 1  ω7c/C16 : 1  ω6c). Unlike X. hortorum pathovars, the Hydrangea strains were unable to grow in the presence of lithium chloride and could only weakly utilize d-fructose-6-PO4 and glucuronamide. Phylogenetic characterization based on multilocus sequence analysis and phylogenomic characterization revealed that the strains are close to, yet distinct from, X. hortorum. The genome sequences of the strains had average nucleotide identity values ranging from 94.35-95.19 % and in silico DNA-DNA hybridization values ranging from 55.70 to 59.40 % to genomes of the X. hortorum pathovars. A genomics-based loop-mediated isothermal amplification assay was developed which was specific to the Hydrangea strains for its early detection. A novel species, Xanthomonas hydrangeae sp. nov., is proposed with strain LMG 31884T (=CCOS 1956T) as the type strain

    Evaluation of alternative mosquito sampling methods for malaria vectors in Lowland South - East Zambia.

    Sampling malaria vectors and measuring their biting density is of paramount importance for entomological surveys of malaria transmission. Human landing catch (HLC) has been traditionally regarded as a gold standard method for surveying human exposure to mosquito bites. However, due to the risk of human participant exposure to mosquito-borne parasites and viruses, a variety of alternative, exposure-free trapping methods were compared in lowland, south-east Zambia. Centres for Disease Control and Prevention miniature light trap (CDC-LT), Ifakara Tent Trap model C (ITT-C), resting boxes (RB) and window exit traps (WET) were all compared with HLC using a 3 × 3 Latin Squares design replicated in 4 blocks of 3 houses with long lasting insecticidal nets, half of which were also sprayed with a residual deltamethrin formulation, which was repeated for 10 rounds of 3 nights of rotation each during both the dry and wet seasons. The mean catches of HLC indoor, HLC outdoor, CDC-LT, ITT-C, WET, RB indoor and RB outdoor, were 1.687, 1.004, 3.267, 0.088, 0.004, 0.000 and 0.008 for Anopheles quadriannulatus Theobald respectively, and 7.287, 6.784, 10.958, 5.875, 0.296, 0.158 and 0.458, for An. funestus Giles, respectively. Indoor CDC-LT was more efficient in sampling An. quadriannulatus and An. funestus than HLC indoor (Relative rate [95% Confidence Interval] = 1.873 [1.653, 2.122] and 1.532 [1.441, 1.628], respectively, P < 0.001 for both). ITT-C was the only other alternative which had comparable sensitivity (RR = 0.821 [0.765, 0.881], P < 0.001), relative to HLC indoor other than CDC-LT for sampling An. funestus. While the two most sensitive exposure-free techniques primarily capture host-seeking mosquitoes, both have substantial disadvantages for routine community-based surveillance applications: the CDC-LT requires regular recharging of batteries while the bulkiness of ITT-C makes it difficult to move between sampling locations. RB placed indoors or outdoors and WET had consistently poor sensitivity so it may be useful to evaluate additional alternative methods, such as pyrethrum spray catches and back packer aspirators, for catching resting mosquitoes

    Real-time traffic event detection using Twitter data

    Incident detection is an important component of intelligent transport systems and plays a key role in urban traffic management and provision of traveller information services. Due to its importance, a wide number of researchers have developed different algorithms for real-time incident detection. However, the main limitation of existing techniques is that they do not work well in conditions where random factors could influence traffic flows. Twitter is a valuable source of information as its users post events as they happen or shortly after. Therefore, Twitter data have been used to predict a wide variety of real-time outcomes. This paper aims to present a methodology for a real-time traffic event detection using Twitter. Tweets are obtained through the Twitter streaming application programming interface in real time with a geolocation filter. Then, the author used natural language processing techniques to process the tweets before they are fed into a text classification algorithm that identifies if it is traffic related or not. The authors implemented their methodology in the West Midlands region in the UK and obtained an overall accuracy of 92·86%

    Everyday vulnerabilities and ''social dispositions'' in the Malian Sahel, an indication for evaluating future adaptability to water crises?

    International audienceSince the 1970s, precipitation in the Sahel has decreased and become very irregular, leading to widespread drought, whilst the human need for water has rapidly increased. A new ''dispositions''-based approach was adapted in order to analyse human interactions with environmental hazards and applied to the case of Hombori village in northeastern Mali. This article explores how the population and political stakeholders perceive, live with and respond to the increasing scarcity of water. It also explores how their current vulnerability and ability to cope with variations in available water resources indicate future adaptability to climate shocks. On the one hand, this research shows how the population copes with variations in water resource availability: the population's socio-spatial organisation explains the inhabitants' exposure to this problem and some of the factors affecting vulnerability, the elderly and women being the hardest hit. The water issue is generally managed on a ''day-to-day'' basis and considered a big problem only in the dry season, thus lowering any incentive for self-protection. The main two variables that could explain this kind of risk management are the conflicting local governance and current social rules. On the other hand, the discussion of results, based on a conceptual model of social responses, explains why these current ''social dispositions'' to cope with and even address the water scarcity issue do not guarantee future adaptability to climate change
