Technological Innovation Inputs, Outputs and Performance: the moderating role of Family Involvement in Management

    Get PDF
The objective of this article is to study the relationship between R&D intensity and continuous technological innovation and between technological innovation outcomes and sustained firm performance. We also analyse the moderating role of family management in both relationships. The results show that R&D intensity has a positive effect on continuous technological innovation and family management moderates negatively this relationship. Our findings also suggest that the influence of the family management significantly contribute to improve the effect of the technological innovation on sustained performance. It seems that some family-managed firms characteristics (nepotism,…) could hinder the efficient conversion of R&D expenditures into continuous technological innovation outcomes, but once family-managed firms have obtained technological innovation outcomes, they become riskier and put all its social capital to work to improve the conversion of innovation outcomes into performance. Therefore, family involvement in management looks influence technological innovation efficiency

The apical area is the space in the maxillary bones that contains teeth during formation and is subsequently occupied by the apices of the permanent teeth. Its dimensions are easy to perceive and determine by observing a panoramic X-ray. Our objective was to analyze the influence of crossbite on the size of the anterior and mesial apical area in Caucasian children. Based on the ortopantomograph of 353 patients in mixed dentition and crossbite, the sizes of the apical areas of the four hemiarches were studied using the Tps Dig Version 2® computer program. These data were subjected to statistical analysis using the SPSS 22.0 for Windows program and applying the methods of descriptive statistics of quantitative variables, the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, the non-parametric test Mann-Whitney-Wilcoxon test, and the paired Student t-test. In the group of boys, average values in the superior-mesial, superior-anterior, inferior-mesial and inferior-anterior apical areas of the crossbite were 173.43, 99.85, 180.32 and 87.56 respectively, with the lower values being in the hemiarch without malocclusion. In the group of girls, for the same apical areas, average values were 165.64, 94.24, 168.62 and 83.34 respectively, with all the highest values being in the hemiarch with crossbite, except for the inferior-mesial apical area. Statistically significant differences were found in the hemiarch with crossbite between both genders in the superior-anterior, inferior-anterior and inferior-mesial apical areas, with the significance being 0.001, 0.029 and 0.001 respectively, while in the hemiarch without malocclusion significance was observed in the superior-mesial, superior-anterior and inferior-mesial apical areas, with values of 0.004, 0.001 and 0.004, respectively. Crossbite affects the size of the anterior apical area in both arches and in both genders. The mesial apical area is influenced by this malocclusion in the jaw in boys and in the maxilla girls

Density Functional Theory-Inspired Design of Ir/P,S-Catalysts for Asymmetric Hydrogenation of Olefins

In silico-based optimization of Ir/P,S-catalysts for the asymmetric hydrogenation of unfunctionalized olefins using (E)-1-(but-2-en-2-yl)-4-methoxybenzene as a benchmark olefin has been carried out. DFT calculations revealed that the thioether group has a major role in directing the olefin coordination. This, together with the configuration of the biphenyl phosphite group, has an impact in maximizing the energy gap between the most stable transition states leading to opposite enantiomers. As a result, the optimized catalyst proved to be efficient in the hydrogenation of a range of alkenes with the same substitution pattern and olefin geometry as the benchmark olefin, regardless of the presence of functional groups with different coordination abilities (ee values up to 97%). Appealingly, further modifications at the thioether groups and at the biaryl phosphite moiety allowed the highly enantioselective hydrogenation of olefins with different substitution patterns (e.g., α,β-unsaturated lactones and lactams, 1,1′-disubstituted enol phosphinates, and cyclic β-enamides; ee values up to >99%).We gratefully acknowledge financial support from the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation (PID2019-104904GB-I00, PGC2018-100780-B-I00, and PGC2018-096616-B-I00), European Regional Development Fund (AEI/FEDER, UE), the Catalan Government (2017SGR1472), and the University of Alicante (VOGROB-316FI). Incidence of oral health in paediatric patients with disabilities: sensory disorders and autism spectrum disorder. Systematic review II

    Get PDF
Introduction: We are currently witnessing an increase in the number of disabled patients, creating the need for knowledge of each of the pathologies and of the different oral and dental conditions they present, in order to achieve efficient management and treatment. Objectives: To analyse the existing scientific literature on the oral conditions of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and children with sensory deficits (SD), in comparison with the healthy child population. Material and Method: The bibliographic search was carried out in Pubmed/Medline, Scopus and Cochrane Library and included articles taking a sample of children between 0 and 18 years of age diagnosed with the abovementioned disorders and including at least one of the following oral hygiene conditions - oral hygiene, dental caries, malocclusion, oral habits, dental trauma, and gingival-periodontal status - comparing them with a healthy population. Results: A total of 10 articles were obtained for autism spectrum disorder and six for sensory deficits. Conclusions: Of all the variables studied, only the state of oral, gingival and/or periodontal hygiene can be considered worse in patients with ASD and SD, although we believe a larger number of research studies is needed to corroborate these results

Oral health in children with physical (Cerebral Palsy) and intellectual (Down Syndrome) disabilities: systematic review I

    Get PDF
Introduction: Traditionally, patients with physical and/or intellectual disabilities presented greater oral pathology, owing to their condition and to other external factors. Improved social and health conditions make it necessary to update knowledge on their oral and dental health. Material and Methods: For this purpose, a bibliographic review was done regarding the state of oral health of children with these two types of disability, in comparison with a control group. Some of the guidelines of the PRISMA statement were taken into account. The ranking of the articles found is based on the modified Newcastle-Ottawa Quality Assessment Scale. The final number of articles evaluated was 14. Parameters such as dental caries, oral hygiene, gingival health, dental traumas, malocclusion and habits were considered. Results: There is no consensus among authors regarding dental caries, oral hygiene and gingival health. The different results obtained are due in part to the fact that the methodologies used were not the same. However, it has been noted that, when studying other parameters and regardless of the methodology employed, the results obtained are similar. Conclusions: Children with physical and intellectual disabilities constitute a group that needs early and regular dental care in order to prevent and limit the severity of the pathologies observed

The influence of crossbite in early development of mandibular bone asymmetries in paediatric patients

All authors agree that posterior crossbite is a malocclusion that affects mandibular growth and may lead to skeletal asymmetry but there are few data on which age these modifications are easily quantifiable. For this study, the researchers used x-ray records of 217 children between 6 and 9 years of age, in the mixed dentition stage and with unilateral posterior crossbite. All the horizontal variables were traced and evaluated by the principal researcher, using the tpsDig version 2 computer program. Subsequently, a descriptive and statistical analysis was carried out, using the SPSS 17.0 for Windows program. After analysing the vertical mandibular traces on the x-rays, the researchers found, in all cases, quantifiable differences between the crossbite side and the non-crossbite side. The differences between horizontal variables were statistically significant (p<0.005) for the entire sample (H3-H4), in the group of boys (H3-H4) and in the 7-year old age group (H1-H2 and H3-H4). Differences were observed in the size of the horizontal measures between the crossbite side and the non-crossbite side. Some of these differences were significant as a function of the sex and age of the study sample
