A search for distant radio-loud quasars in the CLASS survey: three new radio-selected quasars at z>4

We report on the search for distant radio-loud quasars in the Cosmic Lens All Sky Survey (CLASS) of flat spectrum radio sources with S_5GHz>30 mJy. Unresolved optical counterparts were selected from APM scans of POSS-I plates, with e2.0 colours, in an effective area of ~6400 deg^2. Four sources were found to be quasars with z>4, of which one was previously known. This sample bridges the gap between the strong radio surveys with S_5GHz>200 mJy and the samples of radio-weak quasars that can be generated via radio observations of optically selected quasars. In addition, 4 new quasars at z>3 have been found. The selection criteria result in a success-rate of ~1:7 for radio-loud quasars at z>4, which is a significant improvement over previous studies. This search yields a surface density of 1 per 1600 deg^2, which is about a factor of ~15 lower than that found in a similar search for radio-quiet quasars at z>4. The study presented here is strongly biased against quasars beyond z>4.5, since the e-passband of the POSS-I only samples the spectra shortward of 1200 Angstrom at these redshifts.Comment: LaTeX, 7 pages, 5 Figs: to be published in MNRA

Constraining the radio jet proper motion of the high-redshift quasar J2134-0419 at z = 4.3

To date, PMN J2134-0419 (at a redshift z = 4.33) is the second most distant quasar known with a milliarcsecond-scale morphology permitting direct estimates of the jet proper motion. Based on two-epoch observations, we constrained its radio jet proper motion using the very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) technique. The observations were conducted with the European VLBI Network (EVN) at 5 GHz on 1999 November 26 and 2015 October 6. We imaged the central 10-pc scale radio jet emission and modeled its brightness distribution. By identifying a jet component at both epochs separated by 15.86 yr, a proper motion of μ = 0.035 ± 0.023 mas yr-1 is found. It corresponds to an apparent superluminal speed of βa = 4.1 ± 2.7 c. Relativistic beaming at both epochs suggests that the jet viewing angle with respect to the line of sight is smaller than 20°, with a minimum bulk Lorentz factor Γ = 4.3. The small value of the proper motion is in good agreement with the expectations from the cosmological interpretation of the redshift and the current cosmological model. Additionally we analyzed archival Very Large Array observations of J2143-0419 and found indication of a bent jet extending to ˜30 kpc

    Gender Monstrosity

Deadgirl (2008) is based around a group of male teens discovering and claiming ownership of a bound female zombie, using her as a sex slave. This narrative premise raises numerous tensions that are particularly amplified by using a zombie as the film’s central victim. The Deadgirl is sexually passive yet monstrous, reifying the horrors associated with the female body in patriarchal discourses. She is objectified on the basis of her gender, and this has led many reviewers to dismiss the film as misogynistic Torture Porn. However, the conditions under which masculinity is formed here – where adolescent males become "men" by enacting sexual violence – are as problematic as the specter of the female zombie. Deadgirl is clearly horrific and provocative: in this article I seek to probe implications arising from the film’s gender conflicts

Social care regulation: resource use. Final report

This paper reports on the findings of a study investigating the resource use of the NCSC. Our aim was to identify the resource requirements of the NCSC given current workloads and practice. The timing of the study means that the results need to be treated with some caution (see Appendix A). We start by briefly describing the method and response rates and then set the context in terms of the overall levels of regulatory responsibilities and activity during the first year of the NCSC. In section 4 we describe the work undertaken by inspectors and managers in terms of their caseloads and overall time use. We then turn to the individual regulatory activities in order to identify the resource use in terms of time input to the regulatory process, compare with the results of the previous studies and explore factors associated with variations in time taken. We end by identifying the unit cost of staff time and the estimated costs of each of the measured regulatory activities

O sujeito da neurociência: da naturalização do homem ao re-encantamento da natureza The subject in neuroscience: from the naturalization of man to the re-enchantment of nature

The objective of this article is to circumscribe the concept of subject that emerges from neuroscientific theories of the mind. We approach three key authors from the field of neuroscience: Francisco Varela, Humberto Maturana, and Gerald Edelman. Based on an analysis of their work, we conclude that a given concept of subject, founded on an entirely materialist view of the mind, emerges as an advantageous substitute for what we could call a "psychological" concept, based principally but not exclusively on psychoanalysis. We discuss the hypothesis that the current success of the "neuroscientific" vision of human beings, while in fact pointing to some degree of break with the so-called "modern paradigm", may also be interpreted as the radicalization of given characteristics and contradictions present in the constitution of this paradigm itself and, consequently, that of the modern person
