    Networked multiple approaches to developing functional thinking in elementary mathematics textbooks: a case study in China

    By focusing on functional thinking (FT), the core component of algebraic thinking, this study aimed to explore the features of developing FT in textbooks from grades 1 to 6 by examining a popular reform-oriented mathematics textbook series in China. A framework of FT developed by Pittalis and colleagues (2020) was used to examine the FT related tasks in the textbook series. Based on a fine-grained coding analysis, it was found that multiple modes of FT are intended to be developed since the very beginning of elementary school. Multi-modes of FT have been developed and evolved simultaneously and progressively as grades increase, serving as an enhancement for arithmetic learning. Different types of FT tasks provide various opportunities for students to explore these multi-modes of FT while learning and consolidating arithmetic across grades

    11β-HSD1 inhibition ameliorates diabetes-induced cardiomyocyte hypertrophy and cardiac fibrosis through modulation of EGFR activity

    11β-HSD1 has been recognized as a potential therapeutic target for type 2 diabetes. Recent studies have shown that hyperglycemia leads to activation of 11β-HSD1, increasing the intracellular glucocorticoid levels. Excess glucocorticoids may lead to the clinical manifestations of cardiac injury. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate whether 11β-HSD1 activation contributes to the development of diabetic cardiomyopathy. To investigate the role of 11β-HSD1, we administered a selective 11β-HSD1 inhibitor in type 1 and type 2 murine models of diabetes and in cultured cardiomyocytes. Our results show that diabetes increases cortisone levels in heart tissues. 11β-HSD1 inhibitor decreased cortisone levels and ameliorated all structural and functional features of diabetic cardiomyopathy including fibrosis and hypertrophy. We also show that high levels of glucose caused cardiomyocyte hypertrophy and increased matrix protein deposition in culture. Importantly, inhibition of 11β-HSD1 attenuated these changes. Moreover, we show that 11β-HSD1 activation mediates these changes through modulating EGFR phosphorylation and activity. Our findings demonstrate that 11β-HSD1 contributes to the development of diabetic cardiomyopathy through activation of glucocorticoid and EGFR signaling pathway. These results suggest that inhibition of 11β-HSD1 might be a therapeutic strategy for diabetic cardiomyopathy, which is independent of its effects on glucose homeostasis

    Immune-mediated inflammatory diseases and risk of venous thromboembolism: A Mendelian randomization study

    IntroductionImmune-mediated inflammatory diseases (IMIDs) have been associated with an increased risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in multiple observational studies. However, a direct causally relation between IMIDs and VTE remains unclear to date. Here, we used Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to investigate causal associations between IMIDs and VTE.MethodsWe collected genetic data from published genome-wide association studies (GWAS) for six common IMIDs, specifically inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), Crohn’s disease (CD), ulcerative colitis (UC), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), psoriasis (PSO), and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE); and summary-level data for VTE, pulmonary embolism (PE), and deep vein thrombosis (DVT) from the FinnGen database. Two-sample MR analysis using inverse variance weighting (IVW) was performed to identify causal associations between IMIDs and VTE/DVT/PE, and sensitivity analyses were implemented for robustness.ResultsIVW analysis showed a causal relationship between genetically predicted UC (one type of IBD) and the risk of VTE (OR = 1.043, 95% CI: 1.013-1.073, p = 0.004) and DVT (OR = 1.088, 95% CI: 1.043-1.136, p < 0.001), but we found no evidence of causality between UC and PE (OR = 1.029, 95% CI: 0.986-1.074, p = 0.19). In addition, no associations were observed between total IBD, CD, RA, SLE, or PSO and VTE/DVT/PE. Sensitivity analysis found no evidence for horizontal pleiotropy.ConclusionThis MR study provides new genetic evidence for the causal relationship between IMIDs and the risk of VTE. Our findings highlight the importance of active intervention and monitoring to mitigate VTE risk in patients with IBD, in particular those presenting with UC

    Prevalence, associated factors and outcomes of pressure injuries in adult intensive care unit patients: the DecubICUs study

Epidemiologic data is however unavailable. We aimed to provide an international picture of the extent of pressure injuries and factors associated with ICU-acquired pressure injuries in adult ICU patients. Methods: International 1-day point-prevalence study; follow-up for outcome assessment until hospital discharge (maximum 12 weeks). Factors associated with ICU-acquired pressure injury and hospital mortality were assessed by generalised linear mixed-effects regression analysis. Results: Data from 13,254 patients in 1117 ICUs (90 countries) revealed 6747 pressure injuries; 3997 (59.2%) were ICU-acquired. Overall prevalence was 26.6% (95% confidence interval [CI] 25.9–27.3). ICU-acquired prevalence was 16.2% (95% CI 15.6–16.8). Sacrum (37%) and heels (19.5%) were most affected. Factors independently associated with ICU-acquired pressure injuries were older age, male sex, being underweight, emergency surgery, higher Simplified Acute Physiology Score II, Braden score 3 days, comorbidities (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, immunodeficiency), organ support (renal replacement, mechanical ventilation on ICU admission), and being in a low or lower-middle income-economy. Gradually increasing associations with mortality were identified for increasing severity of pressure injury: stage I (odds ratio [OR] 1.5; 95% CI 1.2–1.8), stage II (OR 1.6; 95% CI 1.4–1.9), and stage III or worse (OR 2.8; 95% CI 2.3–3.3). Conclusion: Pressure injuries are common in adult ICU patients. ICU-acquired pressure injuries are associated with mainly intrinsic factors and mortality. Optimal care standards, increased awareness, appropriate resource allocation, and further research into optimal prevention are pivotal to tackle this important patient safety threat

    Landscape Analysis of Geographical Names in Hubei Province, China

    Hubei Province is the hub of communications in central China, which directly determines its strategic position in the country’s development. Additionally, Hubei Province is well-known for its diverse landforms, including mountains, hills, mounds and plains. This area is called “The Province of Thousand Lakes” due to the abundance of water resources. Geographical names are exclusive names given to physical or anthropogenic geographic entities at specific spatial locations and are important signs by which humans understand natural and human activities. In this study, geographic information systems (GIS) technology is adopted to establish a geodatabase of geographical names with particular characteristics in Hubei Province and extract certain geomorphologic and environmental factors. We carry out landscape analysis of mountain-related geographical names and water-related geographical names respectively. In the end, we calculate the information entropy of geographical names of each county to describe the diversity and inhomogeneity of place names in Hubei province. Our study demonstrates that geographical names represent responses to the cultural landscape and physical environment. The geographical names are more interesting in specific landscapes, such as mountains and rivers

    Nitrogen-doped carbon sheets derived from chitin as non-metal bifunctional electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction and evolution

    Affordable, efficient electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reactions (ORR) and oxygen evolution reactions (OER) are critical for various energy technologies. Herein, we report that an activated carbon sheet (ACS) derived from chitin is an efficient non-metal bifunctional electrocatalyst for both ORR and OER. In alkaline media, the as-prepared ACS exhibited remarkable electrocatalytic activity for the oxygen reduction reaction, which was significantly superior to an unactivated carbon sheet (CS) and comparable to the commercial Pt/C catalyst with excellent durability and resistance to the crossover effect. Meanwhile, the same ACS also presents high catalytic activity towards OER, with a small overpotential of similar to 1.64 +/- 0.02 V versus RHE. The excellent electrocatalytic properties of the ACS originated from the combined effect of optimal nitrogen doping, high surface area, and porous architecture. This work demonstrates that the ACS is a promising material candidate with high-performance in electrocatalytic applications in energy technologies
