    A survey on probabilistic broadcast schemes for wireless ad hoc networks

    Broadcast or flooding is a dissemination technique of paramount importance in wireless ad hoc networks. The broadcast scheme is widely used within routing protocols by a wide range of wireless ad hoc networks such as mobile ad hoc networks, vehicular ad hoc networks, and wireless sensor networks, and used to spread emergency messages in critical scenarios after a disaster scenario and/or an accidents. As the type broadcast scheme used plays an important role in the performance of the network, it has to be selected carefully. Though several types of broadcast schemes have been proposed, probabilistic broadcast schemes have been demonstrated to be suitable schemes for wireless ad hoc networks due to a range of benefits offered by them such as low overhead, balanced energy consumption, and robustness against failures and mobility of nodes. In the last decade, many probabilistic broadcast schemes have been proposed by researchers. In addition to reviewing the main features of the probabilistic schemes found in the literature, we also present a classification of the probabilistic schemes, an exhaustive review of the evaluation methodology including their performance metrics, types of network simulators, their comparisons, and present some examples of real implementations, in this paper

    Cultural and Diversity Perceptions of IT Workers of Indian Descent

    Globalization has led to increased use of international work teams comprised of individuals from diverse backgrounds. Beliefs and values of individuals affect the working of such groups, so it is important to understand these differences. The aim of this paper is to understand the cultural and diversity perceptions of IT workers specifically of Indian descent. Two instruments, namely the Diversity Perceptions Index and Hofstede Value survey, were used to collect data. One hundred and eleven respondents of Indian descent working in the IT field completed the survey. Descriptive statistics provided initial results and discussion. The respondents valued diversity, although they experienced work-family conflicts. Results seem to resonate with Hofstede’s description of India as being a collectivistic and masculine society with high power distance, and low uncertainty avoidance. In addition, these IT workers experience high organizational stress and conflicting demands by organizations and family

    Optimization of test‐access architectures and test scheduling for 3D ICs

    This chapter presents a method for robust optimization of 3D test architecture and test scheduling in the presence of input parameter variations. It lists examples of uncertainties in input parameters for 3D test architecture optimization and test scheduling. The chapter then formulates an integer linear programming (ILP) model for robust optimization of 3D test architecture. A recent work has formulated a mathematical model for robust optimization of 3D test architecture and test scheduling and proposed a heuristic based on simulated annealing in order to solve the robust optimization problem for realistic 3D‐ICs. This chapter presents simulation results to evaluate the proposed heuristic method for robust optimization. The framework is implemented in C++. The chapter demonstrates the effect of robust optimization using a simple example. It also shows simulation results obtained with publicly available benchmarks

    Anti-nociceptive action of peripheral mu-opioid receptors by G-beta-gamma protein-mediated inhibition of TRPM3 channels

    Opioids, agonists of µ-opioid receptors (µORs), are the strongest pain killers clinically available. Their action includes a strong central component, which also causes important adverse effects. However, µORs are also found on the peripheral endings of nociceptors and their activation there produces meaningful analgesia. The cellular mechanisms downstream of peripheral µORs are not well understood. Here, we show in neurons of murine dorsal root ganglia that pro-nociceptive TRPM3 channels, present in the peripheral parts of nociceptors, are strongly inhibited by µOR activation, much more than other TRP channels in the same compartment, like TRPV1 and TRPA1. Inhibition of TRPM3 channels occurs via a short signaling cascade involving Gβγ proteins, which form a complex with TRPM3. Accordingly, activation of peripheral µORs in vivo strongly attenuates TRPM3-dependent pain. Our data establish TRPM3 inhibition as important consequence of peripheral µOR activation indicating that pharmacologically antagonizing TRPM3 may be a useful analgesic strategy

    Proteasome inhibition induces hsp30 and hsp70 gene expression as well as the acquisition of thermotolerance in Xenopus laevis A6 cells

    Previous studies have shown that inhibiting the activity of the proteasome leads to the accumulation of damaged or unfolded proteins within the cell. In this study, we report that proteasome inhibitors, lactacystin and carbobenzoxy-l-leucyl-l-leucyl-l-leucinal (MG132), induced the accumulation of ubiquitinated proteins as well as a dose- and time-dependent increase in the relative levels of heat shock protein (HSP)30 and HSP70 and their respective mRNAs in Xenopus laevis A6 kidney epithelial cells. In A6 cells recovering from MG132 exposure, HSP30 and HSP70 levels were still elevated after 24 h but decreased substantially after 48 h. The activation of heat shock factor 1 (HSF1) may be involved in MG132-induced hsp gene expression in A6 cells since KNK437, a HSF1 inhibitor, repressed the accumulation of HSP30 and HSP70. Exposing A6 cells to simultaneous MG132 and mild heat shock enhanced the accumulation of HSP30 and HSP70 to a much greater extent than with each stressor alone. Immunocytochemical studies determined that HSP30 was localized primarily in the cytoplasm of lactacystin- or MG132-treated cells. In some cells treated with higher concentrations of MG132 or lactacystin, we observed in the cortical cytoplasm (1) relatively large HSP30 staining structures, (2) colocalization of actin and HSP30, and (3) cytoplasmic areas that were devoid of HSP30. Lastly, MG132 treatment of A6 cells conferred a state of thermotolerance such that they were able to survive a subsequent thermal challenge
