From game trees to a narrative game: prototype

    Get PDF
The game theory started as a mathematical exploration of human behaviours. The term has expanded to cover this mathematical exploration of the decision-making not only of humans but also of animals and computers. Through this project, we will be able to study how can we integrate the mathematical aspect of a specific topic from game theory into a development of a game. Furthermore, what advantages or inconveniences can we find on our way to integrating this field into game development? First, we must focus on learning key concepts about game theory topics, specifically Game Trees and subgame perfect equilibrium. These concepts will help us create a game tree and calculate the decision-making values, so later, it becomes easier to mix with other concepts once we accomplish the research. When we look at a game tree, we can easily relate some similarities with another well-known video game system. These systems are narrative trees or decision trees. So the main focus of this project is to create a game prototype where a player has to make decisions like in a narrative game. However, instead of a standard decision tree, we will investigate making this tree with the concepts learned through game theory. The key to success will be learning how to create a game tree and combining this with some psychology so players can feel that their decisions have some value, as we would see in a game tree. All these challenges will illustrate through the development part of the project

Our chapter aims to design an empirical program for the best use of storytelling for construction, verbalization, meditations with different objectives: mindfulness and the art of storytelling. Why storytelling mindfulness? Storytelling is dynamic, imaginative, and interactive. It has a way of reaching a part of the mind and body that integrates us and helps us feel whole. It deepens our understanding of who we are and the skills we already have inside. I truly believe that at our core we are playful, imaginative beings and that this part of ourselves is what allows us to transform, grow and heal

The purpose of this work was to evaluate treatments that increase polylactic acid (PLA) biodegradation during composting and anaerobic digestion. Treatments were chosen on the potential to reduce molecular weight and affect structural integrity of the polymer. Five potential treatments were investigate, and it was found that steam exposure was the most effective treatment with up to 94% molecular weight reduction with 120°C steam for 4 hours. To determine kinetics of PLA molecular weight reduction after exposure to steam, a first-order reaction model was proposed. It was found that the model, which is time and temperature dependent, fits experimental data well, with activation energy, Ea, of 52.3 KJ/mol. In addition, it was demonstrated that steam treatments hydrolyze polymer molecules, resulting in de-polymerization to lactic acid. At 120°C, weight loss of PLA was 84.7% after 24 hours, indicating significant conversion to lactic acid. To develop a simple method to evaluate PLA aerobic biodegradation in compost, the fundamentals of conversion were examined, and three approaches were designed and assessed. These methods are referred to as methods of “flexible bags”, “rigid containers with plastic lids” and “perforated jars”. It was found that the method of perforated jars was most reliable, simple and consistent to apply. To evaluate effects of treatment in subsequent anaerobic digestion, weight loss and biochemical methane potential (BMP) of treated samples were investigated under mesophilic and thermophilic anaerobic conditions. Untreated PLA did not degrade under mesophilic conditions. However, degradation did occur under thermophilic conditions, producing 187 ccCH4/g at 58°C after 56 days. The best scenario evaluated, was steam-treated PLA at 120°C for 3 hours subjected to anaerobic thermophilic conditions, where the yield of methane was 225 ccCH4/g after 56 days. While untreated PLA biodegrades more slowly than common organic feedstock, steam-treated PLA biodegraded faster. Results of this investigation show that treatment of PLA with steam at 120°C for 3 hours reached 60% degradation in 14 days. Compost was not altered by PLA conversion.Organización de Estados Americanos (OEA). Laspa

The massive stellar content in NGC604 and its evolutionary state

    Get PDF
The ultraviolet resonance wind stellar lines, the nebular optical emission lines and the higher order terms of the Balmer series and HeI absorption lines detected in the spectra of NGC 604 are interpreted using evolutionary models optimized for young star forming regions. The evolutionary state and the massive stellar content of the region is derived in a self-consistent way. The three techniques applied suggest that the central ionizing cluster in NGC 604 is very young, 3 Myr old, and that the stars in the cluster were formed in an instantaneous burst following a Salpeter or flatter IMF, having stars more massive that 80 Msol. The stellar cluster is able to provide most of the ionizing photons needed to photoionize the whole nebula, and the wind power to form the central shell structure where the cluster core is located. The stellar cluster is affected by an extinction similar to the average extinction that affects the ionized gas. The estimated number of massive stars in the cluster is also in agreement with that derived from previous studies based on the detection of individual stars. The results that we present here support the use of these techniques for the interpretation of the integrated light of more distant star forming regionsComment: To be published in MNRAS. 17 pages and 17 figure
