Effect of cytostatic drugs on the sludge and on the mixed liquor characteristics of a cross-flow membrane bioreactor: Consequence on the process
The influence of cyclophosphamide and its principal metabolites (CPs) on the physicochemical properties of the mixed liquor of a cross-flow membrane bioreactor and the consequences for membrane fouling were investigated. The influence of CPs was determined by comparing the performance of two bioreactors running in parallel, MBR-CPs (with CPs) and MBR-control (without CPs). The physicochemical properties of the mixed liquor were characterized by soluble extracellular polymeric substances (soluble EPS content), particle size distribution and specific cake resistance. Results suggested that the CP toxicity altered the characteristics of the biological matrix of the activated sludge. Micro-organisms exposed to CPs showed higher endogenous respiration rates than MBR-control micro-organisms. The accumulation of soluble EPS and the formation of small particles (in MBR-CPs after cross-flow velocity was raised) increased the resistance to filtration. The fouling potential of the supernatant seemed to be linked more closely to the concentration of polysaccharides than of proteins and humic substances. Modifications of the membrane performance were observed. Under operating conditions, membrane fouling was faster in MBR-CPs than MBR-control. Moreover, the membrane played an important role in the permeate quality and the overall performance of the process, making possible the biological treatment of such an effluen
Abstract Ethylhexyl triazone (EHT) is a sunscreen agent widely used in the formulation of sunscreens and other products for skin care, being the substance that shows greater effectiveness as an absorber of radiation UVB. The present work was carried out with the purpose to obtain information on the physicochemical properties of the EHT, which have not been previously studied in detail. Then, the thermodynamic analysis of the solubility of EHT in the binary mixtures formed for Ethyl acetate + Ethanol (AcOEt + EtOH) at 298.15 K, 303.15 K, 308.15 K, 313.15 K and 318.15 K temperatures, was developed. It was found that the highest value of solubility in mole fraction is obtained for the mixture of 0.20 mass fraction of EtOH at 318.15 K, whereas the lowest value was obtained for the pure ethanol at 298.15 K. The solubility was greater in the mixtures with 0.10 and 0.20 of mass fraction of EtOH according to the temperature. For this reason, by using the van´t Hoff and Gibbs equations the thermodynamic functions free energy, enthalpy, and entropy of solution and mixing of EHT in some AcOEt + EtOH mixtures were evaluated from solubility data determined at several temperatures. By means of enthalpy-entropy compensation analysis, a non linear ∆H0 soln vs. ∆G0 soln compensation plot with negative and positive slopes was obtained if all the composition intervals are considered. Accordingly to these results it follows that at high proportions of EtOH or AcOEt the driving function for the solubility of EHT is the entropy, whereas in mixtures of medium composition, the driving function is the enthalpy. Likewise, the Extended Hildebrand Solubility Approach (EHSA) was applied to evaluate the solubility of EHT in AcOEt + EtOH mixtures at 298.15 K. A good correlative capacity of EHSA was found using a regular polynomial model in order five (overall deviation lower than 1.2 %), when the W interaction parameter is related to the solubility parameter of the mixtures. Besides, the deviations obtained in the estimated solubility with respect to experimental solubility were lower compared with those obtained directly by means of an empiric regression of the experimental solubility as a function of the mixtures´ solubility parameters. Finally, in this work the validity of the Jouyban-Acree (J and A) model was evaluated to predict the solubility of these compounds in ethyl AcOEt + EtOH solvent mixtures. The solubility estimation was studied as a function of temperature and cosolvent composition. The J and A model require only the experimental solubility values in the pure solvents at all the temperatures evaluated. The calculated values by using both compounds deviate notoriously deviate from experimental values in several cases.

Topography of Somatostatin Gene Expression Relative to Molecular Progenitor Domains during Ontogeny of the Mouse Hypothalamus
The hypothalamus comprises alar, basal, and floor plate developmental compartments. Recent molecular data support a rostrocaudal subdivision into rostral (terminal) and caudal (peduncular) halves. In this context, the distribution of neuronal populations expressing somatostatin (Sst) mRNA was analyzed in the developing mouse hypothalamus, comparing with the expression pattern of the genes Orthopedia (Otp), Distal-less 5 (Dlx5), Sonic Hedgehog (Shh), and Nk2 homeobox 1 (Nkx2.1). At embryonic day 10.5 (E10.5), Sst mRNA was first detectable in the anterobasal nucleus, a Nkx2.1-, Shh-, and Otp-positive basal domain. By E13.5, nascent Sst expression was also related to two additional Otp-positive domains within the alar plate and one in the basal plate. In the alar plate, Sst-positive cells were observed in rostral and caudal ventral subdomains of the Otp-positive paraventricular complex. An additional basal Sst-expressing cell group was found within a longitudinal Otp-positive periretromamillary band that separates the retromamillary area from tuberal areas. Apart of subsequent growth of these initial populations, at E13.5 and E15.5 some Sst-positive derivatives migrate tangentially into neighboring regions. A subset of cells produced at the anterobasal nucleus disperses ventralward into the shell of the ventromedial hypothalamic nucleus and the arcuate nucleus. Cells from the rostroventral paraventricular subdomain reach the suboptic nucleus, whereas a caudal contingent migrates radially into lateral paraventricular, perifornical, and entopeduncular nuclei. Our data provide a topologic map of molecularly defined progenitor areas originating a specific neuron type during early hypothalamic development. Identification of four main separate sources helps to understand causally its complex adult organization
Interferon-β1a reduces plasma CD31+ endothelial microparticles (CD31+EMP) in multiple sclerosis
BACKGROUND: A correlation between plasma CD31+ endothelial microparticles (CD31+EMP) levels and clinical, as well as brain MRI activity, in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients has been previously reported. However, the effect(s) of treatment with interferon-β1a (IFN-β1a) on plasma levels of CD31+EMP has not been assessed. In a prospective study, we measured plasma CD31+EMP levels in 30 patients with relapsing-remitting MS. METHODS: Using flow cytometry, in a blinded study, we measured plasma CD31+EMP in 30 consecutive patients with relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS) prior to and 4, 12, 24 and 52 weeks after initiation of intramuscular therapy with interferon-β1a (IFN-β1a), 30 micrograms weekly. At each visit, clinical examination was performed and expanded disability status scale (EDSS) scores were assessed. RESULTS: Plasma levels of CD31+EMP were significantly reduced from 24 through 52 weeks following initiation of treatment with IFN-β1a. CONCLUSION: Our data suggest that serial measurement of plasma CD31+EMP levels may be used as a surrogate marker of response to therapy with INF-β1a. In addition, the decline in plasma levels of CD31+EMP further supports the concept that IFN-β1a exerts stabilizing effect on the cerebral endothelial cells in pathogenesis of MS
The Effects of Stellar Rotation. I. Impact on the Ionizing Spectra and Integrated Properties of Stellar Populations
We present a sample of synthetic massive stellar populations created using
the Starburst99 evolutionary synthesis code and new sets of stellar
evolutionary tracks, including one set that adopts a detailed treatment of
rotation. Using the outputs of the Starburst99 code, we compare the
populations' integrated properties, including ionizing radiation fields,
bolometric luminosities, and colors. With these comparisons we are able to
probe the specific effects of rotation on the properties of a stellar
population. We find that a population of rotating stars produces a much harder
ionizing radiation field and a higher bolometric luminosity, changes that are
primarily attributable to the effects of rotational mixing on the lifetimes,
luminosities, effective temperatures, and mass loss rates of massive stars. We
consider the implications of the profound effects that rotation can have on a
stellar population, and discuss the importance of refining stellar evolutionary
models for future work in the study of extragalactic, and particularly
high-redshift, stellar populations.Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures; accepted for publication in the Astrophysical

LA APLICACIÓN DE LOS MÉTODOS DE LA ANTROPOLOGÍA FÍSICA A UN YACIMIENTO ARQUEOLÓGICO: LA MOTILLA DEL AZUER
This paper presents, from a bioarchaeological approach, progress on the application of different analytical methods to the study of anthropological remains from the necropolis of “Motilla del Azuer”. An assessment of the funeral ritual and the spatial and chronological organization of the tombs at the site is done. Until now, there has been made complete paleodemographical analysis, dental anthropology studies, and an evaluation of the different pathologies of the population. We have paid special attention to the activity patterns documented from muscle attachments. There has also been studying the diets of people in the site through the analysis of trace elements and stable isotopes.
