This study analyzes the presence of the elements and discursive strategies of personalized politics and pop-politics on Twitter during electoral campaigns. To this end, the case of Rafael López-Aliaga, presidential candidate for the 2021 Peruvian general election, was analyzed. Through a quantitative content analysis of 880 tweets published during the last ten weeks of the campaign in his account, the number of messages in which the politician used the resources linked to both political communication strategies was evaluated. The investigation reveals that, contrary to what was thought, the candidate did not use the social network for this purpose. Although he managed to meet the first level of personalization by constructing a speech based on his individuality and not towards his party, he didn't get much further. He resorted to a moderate use of personal characteristics and showed very little of his private life in this medium. Nor did he project himself as a close person, interact with other users, or resort to popularization strategies. However, an unconventional strategy can be seen in the use of the platform, focused on attracting the attention of the media and polarizing voters, with forms more linked to populism that can give us clues about how the leaders of a new radical right in Peru and Latin America build their speeches

The Nature of the Gould Belt from a Fractal Analysis of its Stellar Population

The Gould Belt (GB) is a system of gas and young, bright stars distributed along a plane that is inclined with respect to the main plane of the Milky Way. Observational evidence suggests that the GB is our closest star formation complex, but its true nature and origin remain rather controversial. In this work we analyze the fractal structure of the stellar component of the GB. In order to do this, we tailor and apply an algorithm that estimates the fractal dimension in a precise and accurate way, avoiding both boundary and small data set problems. We find that early OB stars (of spectral types earlier than B4) in the GB have a fractal dimension very similar to that of the gas clouds in our Galaxy. On the contrary, stars in the GB of later spectral types show a larger fractal dimension, similar to that found for OB stars of both age groups in the local Galactic disk (LGD). This result seems to indicate that while the younger OB stars in the GB preserve the memory of the spatial structure of the cloud where they were born, older stars are distributed following a similar morphology as that found for the LGD stars. The possible causes for these differences are discussed.Comment: 20 pages including 7 figures and 1 table. ApJ (in press

Hierarchical Star Formation: Stars and Stellar Clusters in the Gould Belt

We perform a study of the spatial and kinematical distribution of young open clusters in the solar neighborhood, discerning between bound clusters and transient stellar condensations within our sample. Then, we discriminate between Gould Belt (GB) and local Galactic disk (LGD) members, using a previous estimate of the structural parameters of both systems obtained from a sample of O-B6 Hipparcos stars. Using this classified sample we analyze the spatial structure and the kinematic behavior of the cluster system in the GB. The two star formation regions that dominate and give the GB its characteristic inclined shape show a striking difference in their content of star clusters: while Ori OB1 is richly populated by open clusters, not a single one can be found within the boundaries of Sco OB2. This is mirrored in the velocity space, translating again into an abundance of clusters in the region of the kinematic space populated by the members of Ori OB1, and a marginal number of them associated to Sco OB2. In the light of these results we study the nature of the GB with respect to the optical segment of the Orion Arm, and we propose that the different content of star clusters, the different heights over the Galactic plane and the different residual velocities of Ori OB1 and Sco OB2 can be explained in terms of their relative position to the density maximum of the Local Arm in the solar neighborhood. Although morphologically intriguing, the GB appears to be the result of our local and biased view of a larger star cluster complex in the Local Arm, that could be explained by the internal dynamics of the Galactic disk.Comment: 23 pages, including 12 figures. Chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) represents an abnormal clonal expansion of mature antigen-experienced CD5+ B1a cells (Chiorazzi et al, 2005), which present with a highly heterogeneous clinical course depending on associated chromosomal aberrations, somatic mutations within the immunoglobulin variable heavy chain genes (IGHV), and surface CD38 or intracytoplasmic ZAP-70 expression. Given that key signalling components of the B-cell receptor (BCR) are relevant contributors to the variable clinical behaviour of CLL (Stevenson et al, 2011) we explored the influence of functionally relevant germline CD5 variants on CLL prognosis

    Get PDF

The red supergiants & Wolf-Rayet stars of NGC 604

We study the post-main sequence stars in NGC 604, the most luminous HII region in M33. Previously, a number of Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars and one red supergiant (RSG) have been discovered. Based on broadband photometry of the region, we present evidence that is consistent with the presence of this RSG and with three more RSG candidates. Using SED fitting based on HST UVIJHK photometry we estimate the ages of the WR stars and RSGs finding that the two populations are from distinct formation episodes with ages 3.2±12.4\pm%1.0Myrs and 12.4\pm2.1Myrs,respectively.TheRSGshavegreaterextinctionstowardstheirlineofsightthantheWRstarsconsistentwiththeRSGsproducinglargeamountofdust.UsingtheWRandRSGpopulationsandsimilarSEDfitstothemostmassiveOstarsweestimatethatthetotalstellarmassis(3.82.1Myrs, respectively. The RSGs have greater extinctions towards their line of sight than the WR stars consistent with the RSGs producing large amount of dust. Using the WR and RSG populations and similar SED fits to the most massive O stars we estimate that the total stellar mass is (3.8 \pm$ 0.6) x 10^5Msun. We find a large discrepancy between the expected H{\alpha} flux from such a massive cluster and that one observed. This suggests that 49 (+16,-19) percent of the ionizing photons produced by massive stars in NGC 604 is leaking from this HII region. We also suggest that the implications of an old RSG population mean that if NGC 604 was more distant and only observed in the infrared (IR) it would be difficult to study the youngest burst of star formation due to the contamination of RSGs.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 13 pages, 10 figures, 3 table

Although the introduction of immunotherapy has improved outcomes for follicular lymphoma (FL) patients, histological transformation (HT) and early relapse still confer a poor prognosis. We sought to describe the patterns of change in treatment, response, and outcome of FL patients at our institution over the last four decades. Seven hundred and twenty-seven patients (389 F/338 M; median age, 57 years) consecutively diagnosed with grade 1-3a FL between 1980 and 2017, categorized into four decades according to the time of diagnosis, constituted the study population. Clinical characteristics, treatment, response, absolute and relative survival, HT, second malignancies (SM), and causes of death were assessed. Median OS for the entire cohort was 17.6 years. From decade 1 to 4, there was an increase in the complete response rate (48 to 70%), progression-free survival (40 to 56% at 5 years), OS (77 to 86% at 5 years), and relative survival ratio (0.83 to 0.94 at 5 years), with no significant differences in the risk of HT or SM. Lymphoma remained the most common cause of death in all four decades. These findings illustrate the overall improvement in outcome for FL patients, but support the need for further research into risk stratification and management
