Toward a Public MAGIC Gamma-Ray Telescope Legacy Data Portal

    Get PDF
The MAGIC telescopes are one of the three major IACTs (Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes) for observation of gamma rays in the TeV regime currently operative. MAGIC functions since 2003, and has published data from more than 60 sources, mostly blazars. MAGIC already provides astronomical exttt.fits files with basic final scientific products such as spectral energy distributions, light curves and skymaps from published results. In future, the format of the files can be complemented with further relevant information to the community: a) by including the full multi-wavelength dataset enclosed in a publication, b) providing data in alternative easy-to-use formats such as ASCII or ECSV, which are accessible with other commonly used packages such as extttastropy or extttgammapy. Finally, besides high level products, activities have started to provide photon event lists and instrument response functions in a format such that scientists within and outside the community are allowed to perform higher level analysis. A second aim is to provide a full legacy of MAGIC data. This contribution will illustrate the achievements and plans of this activity

This research deals with the need of designing anthropometrical, physical and morpho functional indicators for the selection and sports beginning of swimmers,  and it  will contribute to  perfect this process in the multi- sports centers because in the last decades talent selection in swimming in the country, have been made based on tests which at present are able to suffer changes according to the demands of swimming  and the characteristics of each territory or multi-sports center among others. In its development were used different scientific methods such as the theoretical, analysis, synthesis, empirical such as observation, measurement and the experimental one. The greatest significance of the thesis lies on the proposal of anthropometrical, physical and morpho functional indicators with their corresponding percents used for the selection and beginning of seven years old swimmers.

In Swimming, the ground ruleses for the selection that they find themselves in use, date from 1985 the year. These ground ruleses comprise indicators that in the main do not specify the quantitative neither qualitative moral values for their correct utilization, from the multi-sports center. The investigation responds to the need to design anthropometric indicators, physiques and morpho functional for the selection and sports initiation in Swimming, that they contribute to the perfecting of this process, since in last decades, the selection of talents for the Swimming at the Country it has come true on the base of proofs, that in the present-day moments they are liable to change in mail to the requirements in use of sports and to the particularities of each territory or municipality. In order to achieve this perfecting reflects to him on the job of the indicators in use and indicating new others contentions in the Project for the Selection and Initiation in the Swimming of the municipality Bayamo, the fact that they would do more confers an objective aspect to the selection and evaluation of the possible talents you did not sole in the ages already established by the national system, but in more premature ages where the study in this sports discipline went.

Constraining very-high-energy and optical emission from FRB 121102 with the MAGIC telescopes

Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are bright flashes observed typically at GHz frequencies with millisecond duration, whose origin is likely extragalactic. Their nature remains mysterious, motivating searches for counterparts at other wavelengths. FRB 121102 is so far the only source known to repeatedly emit FRBs and is associated with a host galaxy at redshift z ≃ 0.193.We conducted simultaneous observations of FRB 121102 with the Arecibo and MAGIC telescopes during several epochs in 2016-2017. This allowed searches for millisecond time-scale burst emission in very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-rays as well as the optical band. While a total of five FRBs were detected during these observations, no VHE emission was detected, neither of a persistent nature nor burst-like associated with the FRBs. The average integral flux upper limits above 100 GeV at 95 per cent confidence level are 6.6 × 10 -12 photons cm -2 s -1 (corresponding to luminosity LVHE ≲ 10 45 erg s -1 ) over the entire observation period, and 1.2 × 10 -7 photons cm -2 s -1 (LVHE ≳ 10 49 erg s -1 ) over the total duration of the five FRBs. We constrain the optical U-band flux to be below 8.6 mJy at 5σ level for 1-ms intervals around the FRB arrival times. A bright burst with U-band flux 29 mJy and duration ~12 ms was detected 4.3 s before the arrival of one FRB. However, the probability of spuriously detecting such a signal within the sampled time space is 1.5 per cent (2.2, post-trial), i.e. consistent with the expected background. We discuss the implications of the obtained upper limits for constraining FRB models

Periastron Observations of TeV Gamma-Ray Emission from a Binary System with a 50-year Period

between 100 GeV and 20 TeV with the Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array and Major Atmospheric Gamma Imaging Cherenkov telescope arrays. The binary orbit has a period of approximately 50 years, with the most recent periastron occurring on 2017 November 13. Our observations span from 18 months prior to periastron to one month after. A new point-like gamma-ray source is detected, coincident with the location of PSR J2032+4127/MT91 213. The gamma-ray light curve and spectrum are well characterized over the periastron passage. The flux is variable over at least an order of magnitude, peaking at periastron, thus providing a firm association of the TeV source with the pulsar/Be star system. Observations prior to periastron show a cutoff in the spectrum at an energy around 0.5 TeV. This result adds a new member to the small population of known TeV binaries, and it identifies only the second source of this class in which the nature and properties of the compact object are firmly established. We compare the gamma-ray results with the light curve measured with the X-ray Telescope on board the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory and with the predictions of recent theoretical models of the system. We conclude that significant revision of the models is required to explain the details of the emission that we have observed, and we discuss the relationship between the binary system and the overlapping steady extended source, TeV J2032+4130

We present CosmoHub (https://cosmohub.pic.es), a web application based on Hadoop to perform interactive exploration and distribution of massive cosmological datasets. Recent Cosmology seeks to unveil the nature of both dark matter and dark energy mapping the large-scale structure of the Universe, through the analysis of massive amounts of astronomical data, progressively increasing during the last (and future) decades with the digitization and automation of the experimental techniques. CosmoHub, hosted and developed at the Port d'Informacio Científica (PIC), provides support to a worldwide community of scientists, without requiring the end user to know any Structured Query Language (SQL). It is serving data of several large international collaborations such as the Euclid space mission, the Dark Energy Survey (DES), the Physics of the Accelerating Universe Survey (PAUS) and the Marenostrum Institut de Ciencies de l'Espai (MICE) numerical simulations. While originally developed as a PostgreSQL relational database web frontend, this work describes the current version of CosmoHub, built on top of Apache Hive, which facilitates scalable reading, writing and managing huge datasets. As CosmoHub's datasets are seldomly modified, Hive it is a better fit. Over 60 TiB of catalogued information and 50 × 109 astronomical objects can be interactively explored using an integrated visualization tool which includes 1D histogram and 2D heatmap plots. In our current implementation, online exploration of datasets of 109 objects can be done in a timescale of tens of seconds. Users can also download customized subsets of data in standard formats generated in few minutes
