Multiple invasions, Wolbachia and human‑aided transport drive the genetic variability of Aedes albopictus in the Iberian Peninsula
Este artĂculo contiene 15 páginas, 7 figuras, 1 tabla. The Asian tiger mosquito, Aedes albopictus, is one of the most invasive species in the world. Native
to the tropical forests of Southeast Asia, over the past 30 years it has rapidly spread throughout
tropical and temperate regions of the world. Its dramatic expansion has resulted in public health
concerns as a consequence of its vector competence for at least 16 viruses. Previous studies showed
that Ae. albopictus spread has been facilitated by human-mediated transportation, but much remains
unknown about how this has affected its genetic attributes. Here we examined the factors that
contributed to shaping the current genetic constitution of Ae. albopictus in the Iberian Peninsula,
where the species was first found in 2004, by combining population genetics and Bayesian modelling.
We found that both mitochondrial and nuclear DNA markers showed a lack of genetic structure and
the presence of worldwide dominant haplotypes, suggesting regular introductions from abroad.
Mitochondrial DNA showed little genetic diversity compared to nuclear DNA, likely explained by
infection with maternally transmitted bacteria of the genus Wolbachia. Multilevel models revealed
that greater mosquito fluxes (estimated from commuting patterns and tiger mosquito population
distribution) and spatial proximity between sampling sites were associated with lower nuclear genetic
distance, suggesting that rapid short- and medium-distance dispersal is facilitated by humans through
vehicular traffic. This study highlights the significant role of human transportation in shaping the
genetic attributes of Ae. albopictus and promoting regional gene flow, and underscores the need for a
territorially integrated surveillance across scales of this disease-carrying mosquito. The research leading to these results has received funding from the Spanish

High sensitivity of brain octopamine levels to stress
Rats were submitted to unsignalled and uncontrolled electrical shocks. When re-exposed to the same situation but not shocked, 24 h later, their locomotor activity was significantly reduced compared to that of controls. This conditioned suppression was associated with a significant decrease in p-octopamine (OA) in brain stem and hypothalamus. Shocks delivered just before brain fixation produced an even larger decrease in cerebral OA. Heart levels of OA were not affected. Cerebral and peripheral levels of dopamine and noradrenaline were not significantly or reliably affected. These results, as those of previous experiments, suggest that octopamine is involved in emotional, neurovegetative responses to stress
Impact of bi-planar localization of the tricuspid valve on the evaluation of right ventricular functional parameters in the short axis plane
International audiencePrimary objective was to evaluate by cardiac MRI the accuracy of right ventricular stroke volume (RVSV) measurement in the short-axis (SA) plane with cross-referencing of the tricuspid plane. 2D phase-contrast measurement at the main pulmonary artery (PSV) was the reference. Secondary objective was to analyze the reproducibility of RV functional parameters. In this single-center retrospective study, 41 patients (mean age 40 ± 18 years; age range 16-71 years; M/F sex ratio 51%) referred for various acquired and congenital cardiopathies underwent CMR including SA balanced steady state free precession imaging (b-SSFP). Right ventricular vertical long-axis and four chamber views were used for cross-referenced localization of the tricuspid valve. Right ventricular functional parameters were measured on three occasions by two observers using Syngo Via® (Siemens Healthineers, Erlangen, Germany). The Student t-test and Bland Altman plot were used to test for differences between RV stroke volumes derived from cine b-SSFP (RVSV) or 2D PC (PSV). Bland Altman plots, coefficient of variation (COV) and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) were used to evaluate intra- and inter-observer reproducibility of RVSV, RVED and RVES volumes, and RV ejection fraction. There was high correlation (r = 0.94) and no significant difference between RVSV and PSV (83 ± 20 mL vs. 81 ± 21 mL p > 0.05). Intra- (ICC: 0.95; COV: 6.2) and inter-observer reliability (ICC: 0.91; COV: 8.9) of RVSV measurements were excellent. Finally, intra- and inter-observer reproducibility was excellent for RVEF, RVEDV and RVESV. Right ventricular stroke volumes can be routinely derived from SA analysis using cross-referenced localization of the atrioventricular plane. Moreover, all right ventricular systolic function parameters are highly reproducible when using this technique
