The ring compression test: Analysis of dimensions and canonical geometry

    Get PDF
The compression ring test is universally accepted as a perfectly valid method by which determine simply and reliably the adhesion friction factor in a plastic deformation process. Its methodology is based on the application of geometric changes as both the reduction in thickness as the decrease in bore inner diameter in the strained ring itself. In this paper the performance of that test is the basis for establishing the coefficient of friction on a forging process so that, given this, its application to Upper Bound Theorem (UBT) by model Triangular Rigid Zones (TRZ), enable the establishment an intercomparison with empirical force, reaching a cuasivalidation of this Theorem in a certain range.Universidad de Málaga. Disc volume properties from MRI in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis: correlation to surgical outcome

    Get PDF
In young scoliotic patients, the post-operative consequence of spine fusion upon the free lower lumbar spine is one of the major concerns of the surgical treatment. The remodeling of free-motion segment and the role of discs below thoraco-lumbar fusions remains unknown. However, disc hydration and mass exchange flow between disc and vertebral body should play a significant role in the mechano-biology of the vertebral segment. Magnetic resonance imaging is relevant to study intervertebral discs in young scoliotic patients since related to hydration and non-radiant

A study about the social construction process of Cariri's Region storytellers in the Ceara State, Northeast of Brazil under the cultural dimension's perspective requires a research methodology which is able to demonstrate the ways these women perceive and narrate the social story and their own lives. Storytelling is a way to bring women's experiences and the art's singularities of reconstructing and telling the past and the present. The exploration of the memory's dimension means to achieve the past through the narrative of the present. Since this is a qualitative research, it focuses on field work that utilizes techniques which enable the listening of the women's experience. It may be characterized as a qualitative research with an ethnographic character based on an oral story methodological approach. By reconstructing their memories, the women of this research narrate the history of his city, his family, religious characters related to their faith and the oratories of their homes and community. They use pens, computers and rhymes while they reconstruct the histories which are narrated in "cordel"3. They also use needles, threads when they embroil their characters in ornamental panels

_________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACTThis paper presents the study of elderly users direct participation in the preparation of teaching material using user-centered design in order to make it more attractive, accessible and educational. We sought to underpin all its activities through multiple intelligences defended by Howard Gardner. For the teaching material validation process we used the empirical technique of interactive workshops that requires direct participation of those involved. In this manner, a qualitative assessment of these materials by users was performed, which results are presented here. The study included 31 elderly users, with a mean age of 65 years and heterogeneous schooling, participants of the extension project of “Computer Workshops for The Elderly” the Federal University of Santa Catarina

The sources of authority for shamanic speech : Examples from the Kham-Magar of Nepal

Among the Kham-Magar, an indigenous population of West Nepal, shamans end their long ritual chants with the promise to keep to the terms of the contract that bind human beings to the supernatural entities. In this paper I identify the sources of authority that allow the ritual specialists of this community to act as its spokespersons toward invisible partners. Taking up the debate initiated in the introduction to this special issue, I begin by confronting the notion of "social magic" that Bourdieu (1982:97-161) sees as the source of all authority, with the "discourse of magic" proposed by the linguist Tzvetan Todorov (1978:246-82), showing that the two approaches are less inconsistent than might first appear to be the case: both suggest that the efficacy of ritual speech rests on deception. The second part of the paper turns to Kham-Magar ethnography; it examines the staging of the sources of shamanic authority in the ceremony of consecration of a new shaman. I partly challenge Bourdieu's (1982:20) vision that ritual techniques are mainly techniques of domination, ensuring that the dominant power is reproduced, rather than being a source of authority for ritual specialists: "Rituals represent the limit of all situations of imposition1 where, through the application of a technical competence, however imperfect, a primarily social competence is exercised: the competence of the speaker who is authorized by his or her group to speak with authority." The third part looks precisely into the "competence of the speaker," shamanic speech itself, for possible sources of his or her ritual authority. I explore the pragmatic effects of the ritual use of language, including a reflexive definition of the performer. I argue that these techniques set up the conditions for the emergence of a transcendent authority.Issue title: Authoritative Speech in the Himalayas. Anne de Sales is an anthropologist, who holds the position of Senior Researcher in the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS). Her publications on Nepal include a monograph on an ethnic minority, the Kham-Magar, and numerous articles on shamanic practices and oral literature. Since 1999 her publications have also addressed a range of anthropological issues concerning the impact of the Maoist insurrection on rural Nepal

Application of the Upper Bound Theorem to indentation processes with tilted punch by means of Modular Model

    Get PDF
Nowadays, the indentation processes are resuming it importance due to the new deformation processes that are being developed, as the Incremental Forming Process (IFP) or the Localized-Incremental Forming Process (LIFP) [1]. In this paper, a tilt punch is considered in order to cover the largest possible number of cases in the study of the indentation,. Thus, using combinations of flat and tilt punches, it will be possible to analyze complex geometries in future studies. Present study shows the analysis of the indentation process by the Upper Bound Theorem (UBT), when it is performed with a tilt punch. A modular model is developed, compound by two modules of Triangular Rigid Zones (TRZ) each [2], which adapts to the configuration of the punch.Universidad de Málaga.
