    Modelación de las propiedades hidráulicas del suelo natural de Pisciolo en base a su análisis microestructural

    Como es bien conocido, uno de los factores de importancia que interviene en las propiedades mecánicas e hidráulicas de los suelos compactados es la microestructura que adquieren durante un proceso de compactación. De la misma manera, la microestructura de un suelo natural adquirida tras su historia tensional condiciona sus propiedades hidromecánicas y su comportamiento macroestructural. La presente investigación, analiza la evolución de la microestructura mediante la técnica de porosimetría por intrusión de mercurio (MIP) en muestras del suelo de Pisciolo, un suelo arcilloso natural, duro y fisurado a distintas escalas de estudio, que es sometido a una trayectoria de humedecimiento. Los ensayos MIP se realizan sobre muestras representativas del terreno en condiciones iniciales (condiciones in situ) y finales (muestras deformadas microestructuralmente tras aplicar una trayectoria de humedecimiento que pretende reproducir la saturación del suelo bajo intensas lluvias). Para los cuales, las mediciones resultantes, permiten caracterizar elsuelo a nivel microestructural, identificando la distribución de familias de poros dominantes en la muestra y su evolución bajo las solicitaciones climáticas impuestas. Finalmente, la investigación apuesta por la modelación numérica de las distintas propiedades hidráulicas del suelo estudiado, condicionantes en el comportamiento a escala de campo de los deslizamientos del caso de Pisciolo, a partir de las propiedades microestructurales analizadas

    Street outreach rapid HIV testing in university settings: a priority strategy?

    OBJECTIVE: To evaluate an HIV testing program in the university environment by analyzing the prevalence of infection, risk behaviors and history of sexually transmitted infections and by performing HIV tests. METHODS: During October-November of 2008 and November-December of 2009, 1668 persons received rapid HIV testing in a mobile unit located in university campuses in the cities of Madrid, Málaga and Salamanca (Spain). While waiting for the test results, participants completed a brief questionnaire. RESULTS: A total of 15.7% were men who had sex with men (MSM), 28.6% were exclusively heterosexual men (HTX), and 55.7% were women. Nearly three-quarters (73.3%) were under 25 years of age, 8.5% were born abroad and only 4% had no secondary education. Fifty-one percent of HTX, 42% of women and 6.3% of MSM had casual sexual partners in the past 12 months without always using a condom. This behavior was also reported by 41.5% of MSM with same sex partners. A sexually transmitted infection had previously been diagnosed in 24.7% of MSMs, 14.7% of women and 5.6% of HTX. Four positive results were found, all in MSM who had been tested in the previous 2 years. The prevalence was 1.6% (95% CI: 0.43-3.95) within this group, and 0.2% overall (95% CI: 0.07-0.62). CONCLUSIONS: Despite the high frequency of risk behaviors, the low prevalence of HIV infection and the history of HIV testing suggest that university campuses are not a priority location to develop these programs, which would achieve greater impact and efficiency in more vulnerable populations.El planteamiento, el diseñoo y el análisis del estudio de evaluación que da lugar a este original fueron financiados por la Fundación para la Investigación y Prevención del Sida en España (FIPSE 36634/07) y por el Fondo de Investigación Sanitaria (FIS: PI09/1706).     Association between an oxidative balance score and mortality: a prospective analysis in the SUN cohort

    We aimed to prospectively investigate the association of an overall oxidative balance score (OBS) with all-cause death and cause-specifc mortality among participants in the Seguimiento Universidad de Navarra (SUN) Study, a Mediterranean cohort of Spanish graduates. Methods Using baseline information on 12 a priori selected dietary and non-dietary lifestyle pro- and antioxidants exposures—vitamins C and E, β-carotenes, selenium, zinc, heme iron, polyphenols, total antioxidant capacity, body mass index, alcohol, smoking, and physical activity—we constructed an equally weighted OBS categorized into quartiles, with higher scores representing greater antioxidant balance. Cox proportional hazards models were ftted to evaluate the association between the OBS and mortality. Results A total of 18,561 participants (mean [SD] age, 38.5 [12.4] years; 40.8% males) were included in the analysis. During a median follow-up of 12.2 years (interquartile range 8.3–14.9), 421 deaths were identifed, including 80 deaths from cardiovascular disease (CVD), 215 from cancer, and 126 from other causes. After adjustment for potential confounders, the hazard ratios and 95% confdence interval (CIs) between the highest quartile (predominance of antioxidants) vs. the lowest quartile (reference category) were 0.35 (95% CI 0.22–0.54, P-trend<0.001) for all-cause mortality, 0.18 (95% CI 0.06–0.51, P-trend=0.001) for CVD mortality, 0.35 (95% CI 0.19–0.65, P-trend=0.002) for cancer mortality, and 0.45 (95% CI 0.20–1.02, P-trend=0.054) for other-cause mortality. Conclusion Our fndings suggest a strong inverse association between the OBS and all-cause, CVD, and cancer mortality.     Nano-based approved pharmaceuticals for cancer treatment : present and future challenges

The inadequate drug concentrations at the tumor site led to an increased incidence of multiple drug resistance and the appearance of many severe unde-sirable side effects. Nanotechnology, through the development of nanoscale-based pharmaceuticals, has emerged to provide new and innovative drugs to overcome these limitations. In this review, we provide an overview of the approved nanomedicine for cancer treatment and the rationale behind their designs and applications. We also highlight the new approaches that are currently under investigation and the perspectives and challenges for nanopharmaceuticals, focusing on the tumor microenvironment and tumor disseminate cells as the most attractive and effective strategies for cancer treatments

    Vitamin D treatment prevents uremia-induced reductions in aortic microRNA-145 attenuating osteogenic differentiation despite hyperphosphatemia

    In chronic kidney disease, systemic inflammation and high serum phosphate (P) promote the de-differentiation of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC) to osteoblast-like cells, increasing the propensity for medial calcification and cardiovascular mortality. Vascular microRNA-145 (miR-145) content is essential to maintain VSMC contractile phenotype. Because vitamin D induces aortic miR-145, uremia and high serum P reduce it and miR-145 directly targets osteogenic osterix in osteoblasts, this study evaluated a potential causal link between vascular miR-145 reductions and osterix-driven osteogenic differentiation and its counter-regulation by vitamin D. Studies in aortic rings from normal rats and in the rat aortic VSMC line A7r5 exposed to calcifying conditions corroborated that miR-145 reductions were associated with decreases in contractile markers and increases in osteogenic differentiation and calcium (Ca) deposition. Furthermore, miR-145 silencing enhanced Ca deposition in A7r5 cells exposed to calcifying conditions, while miR-145 overexpression attenuated it, partly through increasing α-actin levels and reducing osterix-driven osteogenic differentiation. In mice, 14 weeks after the induction of renal mass reduction, both aortic miR-145 and α-actin mRNA decreased by 80% without significant elevations in osterix or Ca deposition. Vitamin D treatment from week 8 to 14 fully prevented the reductions in aortic miR-145 and attenuated by 50% the decreases in α-actin, despite uremia-induced hyperphosphatemia. In conclusion, vitamin D was able to prevent the reductions in aortic miR-145 and α-actin content induced by uremia, reducing the alterations in vascular contractility and osteogenic differentiation despite hyperphosphatemia

    Gas hydrate technology: state of the art and future possibilities for Europe

    Interest in natural gas hydrates has been steadily increasing over the last few decades, with the understanding that exploitation of this abundant unconventional source may help meet the ever-increasing energy demand and assist in reduction of CO2 emission (by replacing coal). Unfortunately, conventional technologies for oil and gas exploitation are not fully appropriate for the specific exploitation of gas hydrate. Consequently, the technology chain, from exploration through production to monitoring, needs to be further developed and adapted to the specific properties and conditions associated with gas hydrates, in order to allow for a commercially and environmentally sound extraction of gas from gas hydrate deposits. Various academic groups and companies within the European region have been heavily involved in theoretical and applied research of gas hydrate for more than a decade. To demonstrate this, Fig. 1.1 shows a selection of leading European institutes that are actively involved in gas hydrate research. A significant number of these institutes have been strongly involved in recent worldwide exploitation of gas hydrate, which are shown in Fig. 1.2 and summarized in Table 1.1. Despite the state of knowledge, no field trials have been carried out so far in European waters. MIGRATE (COST action ES1405) aims to pool together expertise of a large number of European research groups and industrial players to advance gas-hydrate related activity with the ultimate goal of preparing the setting for a field production test in European waters. This MIGRATE report presents an overview of current technologies related to gas hydrate exploration (Chapter 2), production (Chapter 3) and monitoring (Chapter 4), with an emphasis on European activity. This requires covering various activities within different disciplines, all of which contribute to the technology development needed for future cost-effective gas production. The report points out future research and work areas (Chapter 5) that would bridge existing knowledge gaps, through multinational collaboration and interdisciplinary approaches

Aquest treball col·legiat tira la vista vint anys enrere per observar el present i projectar el futur. Ens parla de com s'han vingut organitzant i institucionalitzant les polítiques d'igualtat locals a Catalunya, i repassa algunes eines clau en favor de la igualtat de les que s'han dotat els municipis. S'hi tracta l'estructura de les polítiques de gènere, els mecanismes de participació de les dones, els pressupostos amb perspectiva de gènere, el paper del coneixement, els indicadors i la formació, i el lloc que ocupa la comunicació local. Amb la finalitat de reflexionar sobre el que s'ha construït i els importants reptes que hi ha per endavant per seguir acompanyant els municipis en el seu treball per a la igualtat entre les dones i els homes

    Novel deep targeted sequencing method for minimal residual disease monitoring in acute myeloid leukemia

    A high proportion of patients with acute myeloid leukemia who achieve minimal residual disease (MRD) negative status ultimately relapse because a fraction of pathological clones remains undetected by standard methods. We designed and validated a high-throughput sequencing method for MRD assessment of cell clonotypes with mutations of NPM1, IDH1/2 and/or FLT3-SNVs. For clinical validation, 106 follow-up samples from 63 patients in complete remission were studied by NGS, evaluating the level of mutations detected at diagnosis. The predictive value of MRD status by NGS, multiparameter flow cytometry, or quantitative PCR was determined by survival analysis. The method achieved a sensitivity of 10-4 for SNV mutations and 10-5 for insertions/deletions and could be used in acute myeloid leukemia patients who carry any mutation (86% in our diagnosis data set). NGS-determined MRD positive status was associated with lower disease-free survival (hazard ratio [HR] 3.4, p=0.005) and lower overall survival (HR 4.2, p<0.001). Multivariate analysis showed that MRD positive status by NGS was an independent factor associated with risk of death (HR 4.54, p =0.005) and the only independent factor conferring risk of relapse (HR 3.76, p =0.012). This NGS based method simplifies and standardizes MRD evaluation, with high applicability in acute myeloid leukemia. It also improves upon flow cytometry and quantitative PCR to predict acute myeloid leukemia outcome and could be incorporated in clinical settings and clinical trials.This study was supported by the Subdirección General de Investigación Sanitaria (Instituto de Salud Carlos III, Spain) grants PI13/02387 and PI16/01530, and the CRIS against Cancer foundation grant 2014/0120.
