    measurement of the enhancement of the nuclear interaction yield with crystalline targets at cyclotron energies

    Ordered structures such as crystalline materials may help to enhance the nuclear interaction yield. Indeed, the aligned atoms act as a single entity on impinging charged particles, causing the trajectory to pass from its random motion to a deterministic one. In fact, Monte Carlo simulations suggested that specific crystal alignments allow for the enhancement of the production rate of nuclear inelastic reactions, because particles are forced to pass by the atomic nuclei more frequently than would happen in an amorphous material. Recent measurements we carried out at the AN2000 accelerator of the National Institute for Nuclear Physics Legnaro National Laboratories showed the experimental evidence of such an effect. A 643.5 keV collimated proton beam was used to induce the [Formula: see text]O(p,[Formula: see text]N reaction in an Al[Formula: see text]O[Formula: see text] substrate oriented along the axis. The capability of manipulating such an effect paves the way to studying innovative targets for the enhancement of the nuclear interaction yield with a constant density

    Evaluation of Structural and Temporal Properties of Ego Networks for Data Availability in DOSNs

    The large diffusion of Online Social Networks (OSNs) has influenced the way people interact with each other. OSNs present several drawbacks, one of the most important is the problem of privacy disclosures. Distributed Online Social Networks (DOSNs) have been proposed as a valid alternative solution to solve this problem. DOSNs are Online Social Networks implemented on a distributed platform, such as a P2P system or a mobile network. However, the decentralization of the control presents several challenges, one of the main ones is guaranteeing data availability without relying on a central server. To this aim, users’ data allocation strategies have to be defined and this requires the knowledge of both structural and temporal characteristics of ego networks which is a difficult task due to the lack of real datasets limiting the research in this field. The goal of this paper is the study of the behaviour of users in a real social network in order to define proper strategies to allocate the users’ data on the DOSN nodes. In particular, we present an analysis of the temporal affinity and the structure of communities and their evolution over the time by using a real Facebook dataset

    Steering efficiency of a ultrarelativistic proton beam in a thin bent crystal

    Crystals with small thickness along the beam exhibit top performance for steering particle beams through planar channeling. For such crystals, the effect of nuclear dechanneling plays an important role because it affects their efficiency. We addressed the problem through experimental work carried out with 400 GeV/c protons at fixed-target facilities of CERN-SPS. The dependence of efficiency vs. curvature radius has been investigated and compared favourably to the results of modeling. A realistic estimate of the performance of a crystal designed for LHC energy including nuclear dechanneling has been achieved.Comment: 16 pages, 6 figure

    Segmentation of 3D Models for Cultural Heritage Structural Analysis – Some Critical Issues

    Cultural Heritage documentation and preservation has become a fundamental concern in this historical period. 3D modelling offers a perfect aid to record ancient buildings and artefacts and can be used as a valid starting point for restoration, conservation and structural analysis, which can be performed by using Finite Element Methods (FEA). The models derived from reality-based techniques, made up of the exterior surfaces of the objects captured at high resolution, are - for this reason - made of millions of polygons. Such meshes are not directly usable in structural analysis packages and need to be properly pre-processed in order to be transformed in volumetric meshes suitable for FEA. In addition, dealing with ancient objects, a proper segmentation of 3D volumetric models is needed to analyse the behaviour of the structure with the most suitable level of detail for the different sections of the structure under analysis. Segmentation of 3D models is still an open issue, especially when dealing with ancient, complicated and geometrically complex objects that imply the presence of anomalies and gaps, due to environmental agents such as earthquakes, pollution, wind and rain, or human factors. The aims of this paper is to critically analyse some of the different methodologies and algorithms available to segment a 3D point cloud or a mesh, identifying difficulties and problems by showing examples on different structures

    Incremental communication patterns in online social groups

    In the last decades, temporal networks played a key role in modelling, understanding, and analysing the properties of dynamic systems where individuals and events vary in time. Of paramount importance is the representation and the analysis of Social Media, in particular Social Networks and Online Communities, through temporal networks, due to their intrinsic dynamism (social ties, online/offline status, users’ interactions, etc.). The identification of recurrent patterns in Online Communities, and in detail in Online Social Groups, is an important challenge which can reveal information concerning the structure of the social network, but also patterns of interactions, trending topics, and so on. Different works have already investigated the pattern detection in several scenarios by focusing mainly on identifying the occurrences of fixed and well known motifs (mostly, triads) or more flexible subgraphs. In this paper, we present the concept on the Incremental Communication Patterns, which is something in-between motifs, from which they inherit the meaningfulness of the identified structure, and subgraph, from which they inherit the possibility to be extended as needed. We formally define the Incremental Communication Patterns and exploit them to investigate the interaction patterns occurring in a real dataset consisting of 17 Online Social Groups taken from the list of Facebook groups. The results regarding our experimental analysis uncover interesting aspects of interactions patterns occurring in social groups and reveal that Incremental Communication Patterns are able to capture roles of the users within the groups

    Effect of two gaps on the flux lattice internal field distribution: evidence of two length scales from muSR in Mg1-xAlxB2

    We have measured the transverse field muon spin precession in the flux lattice (FL) state of the two gap superconductor MgB2 and of the electron doped compounds Mg1-xAlxB2 in magnetic fields up to 2.8T. We show the effect of the two gaps on the internal field distribution in the FL, from which we determine two coherence length parameters and the doping dependence of the London penetration depth. This is an independent determination of the complex vortex structure already suggested by the STM observation of large vortices in a MgB2 single crystal. Our data agrees quantitatively with STM and we thus validate a new phenomenological model for the internal fields.Comment: now in press Phys. Rev. Lett., small modifications required by the edito

    Specification and analysis of SOC systems using COWS: a finance case study

    Service-oriented computing, an emerging paradigm for distributed computing based on the use of services, is calling for the development of tools and techniques to build safe and trustworthy systems, and to analyse their behaviour. Therefore many researchers have proposed to use process calculi, a cornerstone of current foundational research on specification and analysis of concurrent and distributed systems. We illustrate this approach by focussing on COWS, a process calculus expressly designed for specifying and combining services, while modelling their dynamic behaviour. We present the calculus and one of the analysis techniques it enables, that is based on the temporal logic SocL and the associated model checker CMC. We demonstrate applicability of our tools by means of a large case study, from the financial domain, which is first specified in COWS, and then analysed by using SocL to express many significant properties and CMC to verify them

Saber quais sĂŁo estas espĂ©cies ampliarĂĄ as possibilidades de uso econĂŽmico e sustentĂĄvel dos recursos da flora campestre nativa. Objetiva-se com este trabalho ampliar o conhecimento sobre a flora aromĂĄtica de Santa Catarina, atravĂ©s de uma investigação bibliogrĂĄfica que buscou registros em literaturas disponĂ­veis sobre a aromaticidade das plantas nativas dos campos neste estado. Por fim, a pesquisa constatou a existĂȘncia de no mĂ­nimo 135 espĂ©cies de plantas aromĂĄticas, dentre elas uma sendo endĂȘmica e nove listadas nas listas de espĂ©cies ameaçadas de extinção. O estudo sobre plantas aromĂĄticas ainda se encontra pouco difundido no paĂ­s, apesar do seu alto potencial de aplicação.The vegetation of natural grasslands in Santa Catarina, or also called campos sulinos, is dominated by families that are also known for having species that produce aromatic substances. From these aromatic plants, it is possible to extract essential oils, which are highly fragrant and volatile organic substances, extracted from different parts of plants for use in various industries. Knowing which species are these will expand the possibilities of economic and sustainable use of the resources of the native grassland flora. The aim of this work is to expand the knowledge about the aromatic flora of Santa Catarina, and the research was an approached through a bibliographical investigation that sought records in the available literature on the aromaticity of natives plants in this state. Finally, the research found the existence are at least 135 species of aromatic plants, one being endemic and nine listed on the endangered species list. The study of aromatic plants is still not widespread in the country, despite its high potential for application

    Multidisciplinary study of the Tindari Fault (Sicily, Italy) separating ongoing contractional and extensional compartments along the active Africa–Eurasia convergent boundary

    The Africa–Eurasia convergence in Sicily and southern Calabria is currently expressed by two different tectonic and geodynamic domains: thewestern region, governed by a roughlyN–S compression generated by a continental collision; the eastern one, controlled by a NW–SE extension related to the south-east-directed expansion of the Calabro–Peloritan Arc. The different deformation pattern of these two domains is accommodated by a right-lateral shear zone (Aeolian–Tindari–Letojanni fault system) which, from the Ionian Sea, north of Mt. Etna, extends across the Peloritani chain to the Aeolian Islands. In this work, we study the evidence of active tectonics characterizing this shear zone, through the analysis of seismic and geodetic data acquired by the INGV networks in the last 15 years. The study is completed by structural and morphological surveys carried out between Capo Tindari and the watershed of the chain. The results allowed defining a clear structural picture depicting the tectonic interferences between the two different geodynamic domains. The results indicate that, besides the regional ~N130°E horizontal extensional stress field, another one, NE–SW-oriented, is active in the investigated area. Both tension axes are mutually independent and have been active up to the present at different times. The coexistence of these different active horizontal extensions is the result of complex interactions between several induced stresses: 1) the regional extension (NW–SE) related to the slab rollback and back-arc extension; 2) the strong uplift of the chain; 3) the accommodation between compressional and extensional tectonic regimes along the Aeolian– Tindari–Letojanni faults, through a SSE–NNW right-lateral transtensional displacement. In these conditions, the greater and recurring uplift activity is not able to induce a radial extensional dynamics, but, under the “directing” action of the shear system, it can only act on the regional extension (NW–SE) and produce the second system of extension (NE–SW)
