The horn fly (Haematobia irritans) infestation in the cattle in Brazil leads to significant economic damage for livestock. The efficacy of many essential oils has been demonstrated in the control of veterinary ectoparasites. This study aimed to evaluate the in vitro efficacy of four essential oils to adult horn fly control. The essential oil from Mesosphaerum suaveolens (L.) Kuntze (Lamiaceae) was extracted by hydro-distillation, while that the water steam distillation method was used to extract the essential oils from Varronia curassavica (Jacq.) Roem. & Schult. (Boraginaceae), Alpinia zerumbet (Pers.) B.L. Burtt & R.M. Sm. (Zingiberaceae) and Psidium guajava L. (Myrtaceae). Afterwards, all the essential oils were analyzed by Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (GC?MS) and Flame Ionization Detector (GC-FID) for determination of their chemical composition. The bioassays in vitro were performed according to the impregnated filter paper methodology. All the essential oils evaluated in this study exhibited efficacy in vitro against H. irritans. The highest mortality of H. irritans was determined by essential oils from A. zerumbet (100%) and M. suaveolens (96.2%) at 50 mg mL-1.  In concentration of 100 mg mL-1 V. curassavica and P. guajava essential oils caused the mortality of 99.2% and 82.8%, respectively. The A. zerumbet, M. suaveolens, V. curassavica and P. guajava essential oils showed in vitro efficacy against H. irritans. Further studies with associations and nanoemultions are necessary to increase the efficacy and stability of these essential oils on field conditions. The horn fly (Haematobia irritans) infestation in the cattle in Brazil leads to significant economic damage for livestock. The aim of this study was to analyze the influence of discrimination perception in the quality of life and mental and physical health of Brazilian women living in Portugal, drawing on a descriptive research with a quantitative approach, with 682 female immigrants. Data collection was carried out in two modalities: online, using the LimeSurvey Platform; and presential, conducted at the Associação Mais Brasil [Association More Brazil] and at the Consulate-General of Brazil in Porto and Lisbon, with the application of the Perception of Discrimination Scale and the Medical Outcomes Study 36 – Item Short – Form Health Survey (SF -36). A significant negative correlation was observed between most SF-36 items and the Perception of Discrimination Scale, demonstrating an inversely proportional relation when respondents reporting a higher level of discrimination presented a lower quality of life. Results demonstrate the presence of a strong perception of discrimination, turning it into one of the greatest problems faced by immigrants. Among the most significantly affected dimensions, the following aspects stand out: emotional, pain, overall health status, vitality, social aspects, perception of discrimination, and health changes through time. The exception lies in the functional capacity dimension, which does not present a significant relation with the Perception of Discrimination Scale. The outcomes highlight the negative impact of perceived discrimination on the quality of life dimensions, engendering harmful effects, as well as on physical and mental health. The study points out the need to create public policies that seek to receive, include and integrate female immigrants, guaranteeing their rights and providing information on their duties, in order to reduce discrimination and improve the quality of life and health of this population.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

In bone defects caused by tooth loss, tissue reconstructions are necessary to enable prosthetic rehabilitation with dental implants. Diverse techniques and materials of different origins are used for this purpose.  Leukocyte- and Platelet-Rich Fibrin (L-PRF) has been used in association with osteoconductive biomaterials in procedures of bone regeneration and for covering grafted areas. The aim of this article was to demonstrate a clinical case of bone grafting in the posterior region of the mandible, performed with the use of synthetic biomaterial composed of biphasic calcium phosphate associated with Leukocyte- and Platelet-Rich Fibrin for performing bone augmentation in an alveolar ridge with a horizontal defect, thereby enabling later installation of dental implants and prosthetic rehabilitation in the region. Keywords: bone graft, biomaterials, leukocyte- and platelet-rich fibrin, bone substitutes, dental implants. In bone defects caused by tooth loss, tissue reconstructions are necessary to enable prosthetic rehabilitation with dental implants. Objectives: Copy Number Variations (CNVs) in the human genome account for common populational variations but can also be responsible for genetic syndromes depending on the affected region. Although a deletion in 5p is responsible for a syndrome with highly recognizable phenotypical features, other chromosomal abnormalities might overlap phenotypes, especially considering that most studies in 5p use traditional cytogenetic techniques and not molecular techniques. Methods: The authors have investigated 29 patients with clinical suspicion of 5p- syndrome using Chromosomal Microarray (CMA), and have gathered information on previous tests, clinical signs, symptoms, and development of the patients. Results: The results showed 23 pure terminal deletions, one interstitial deletion, one deletion followed by a 3 Mb duplication in 5p, three cases of 5p deletion concomitant to duplications larger than 20 Mb in chromosomes 2, 9, and 18, and one 5p deletion with a chromosome Y deletion. CMA showed relevant CNVs not typically associated with 5p- that may have contributed to the final phenotype in these patients. Conclusions: The authors have identified three novel rearrangements between chromosomes 5 and 2 (Patient 27), 5 and 18 (Patient 11), and 5 and Y (Patient 22), with breakpoints and overlapped phenotypes that were not previously described. The authors also highlight the need for further molecular investigation using CMA, in different chromosomes beyond chromosome 5 (since those cases did not show only the typical deletion expected for the 5p- syndrome) to explain discordant chromosomal features and overlapped phenotypes to unravel the cause of the syndrome in atypical cases

Plants of the genus Ocimum are widely used in cooking, cosmetics and folk medicine, mainly antibacterial, antifungal and antioxidant properties. This article examines the chemical composition and antioxidant capacity of essential oils of Ocimum varieties. The chemical composition was analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). For the evaluation of the antioxidant capacities, three different methods were used: the 2,20-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging method (DPPH), ABTS (2,2?-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)) antiradical method and ?-carotene/peroxyl radicals (LOO•) systems. There was a great variability in the composition and some species had a high eugenol content: O. tenuiflorum>O. campechianum>O. basilicum var. ball>O. gratissimum >O. basilicum var. greek. Methyl chavicol, neral and geranial were components found in other Ocimum species. Better antioxidant efficiency was found in species with a higher eugenol content as Ocimum tenuiflorum by DPPH IC50 2.31±0.02 µg.mL-1, ABTS IC50 2.22±0.23 µg.mL-1 and ?-carotene/linolenic acid system IC50 16.11±3.59 µg.mL-1, equally statistically significant when compared to pure eugenol. Basil essential oils had higher eugenol content in five species with strong antioxidant potential, adding a differential value to the Food Industry in the production of new functional foods or biofilms for foods with functionalities of preservation or control of chronic diseases

Síndrome do coração Pós-feriado: pacientes acometidos por arritmia cardíaca em detrimento do consumo exagerado de álcool: Post Holiday coração Syndrome: patients suffered by cardiac arrhythmia to the detriment of exaggerated alcohol consumption

    Get PDF
