Ambient noise tomography reveals basalt and sub-basalt velocity structure beneath the Faroe Islands, North Atlantic
The Faroe Islands Passive Seismological Experiment (FIPSE) was funded by Sindri (contract C46-52-01) and formed a collaborative project between Dr. David Cornwell, Prof. Richard England (University of Leicester) and Prof. Graham Stuart (University of Leeds). Primary Beam Shape Calibration from Mosaicked, Interferometric Observations
Image quality in mosaicked observations from interferometric radio telescopes
is strongly dependent on the accuracy with which the antenna primary beam is
calibrated. The next generation of radio telescope arrays such as the Allen
Telescope Array (ATA) and the Square Kilometer Array (SKA) have key science
goals that involve making large mosaicked observations filled with bright point
sources. We present a new method for calibrating the shape of the telescope's
mean primary beam that uses the multiple redundant observations of these bright
sources in the mosaic. The method has an analytical solution for simple
Gaussian beam shapes but can also be applied to more complex beam shapes
through minimization. One major benefit of this simple, conceptually
clean method is that it makes use of the science data for calibration purposes,
thus saving telescope time and improving accuracy through simultaneous
calibration and observation. We apply the method both to 1.43 GHz data taken
during the ATA Twenty Centimeter Survey (ATATS) and to 3.14 GHz data taken
during the ATA's Pi Gigahertz Sky Survey (PiGSS). We find that the beam's
calculated full width at half maximum (FWHM) values are consistent with the
theoretical values, the values measured by several independent methods, and the
values from the simulation we use to demonstrate the effectiveness of our
method on data from future telescopes such as the expanded ATA and the SKA.
These results are preliminary, and can be expanded upon by fitting more complex
beam shapes. We also investigate, by way of a simulation, the dependence of the
accuracy of the telescope's FWHM on antenna number. We find that the
uncertainty returned by our fitting method is inversely proportional to the

Seismic tomography of the North Anatolian Fault: New insights into structural heterogeneity along a continental strike-slip fault
Knowledge of the structure of continental strike-slip faults within the lithosphere is essential to understand where the deformation occurs and how strain localizes with depth. With the aim to improve the constraints on the lower crust and upper mantle structure of a major continental strike-slip fault, we present a high-resolution teleseismic tomography of the North Anatolian Fault Zone (NAFZ) in Turkey. Our results highlight the presence of a relatively high velocity body between the two branches of the fault and significant along-strike variations in the NAFZ velocity structure over distances of ~20 km. We interpret these findings as evidence of laterally variable strain focussing caused by preexisting heterogeneity. Low velocities observed in the crust and upper mantle beneath the NAFZ support the presence of a narrow shear zone widening in the upper mantle, where we constrain its width to be ~50 km.Major funding was provided by the UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) under grant NE/I028017/1. Departures From Axisymmetric Morphology and Dynamics in Spiral Galaxies
New HI synthesis data have been obtained for six face-on galaxies with the
Very Large Array. These data and reanalyses of three additional data sets make
up a sample of nine face-on galaxies analyzed for deviations from axisymmetry
in morphology and dynamics. This sample represents a subsample of galaxies
already analyzed for morphological symmetry properties in the R-band. Four
quantitative measures of dynamical nonaxisymmetry are compared to one another
and to the quantitative measures of morphological asymmetry in HI and R-band to
investigate the relationships between nonaxisymmetric morphology and dynamics.
We find no significant relationship between asymmetric morphology and most of
the dynamical measures in our sample. A possible relationship is found,
however, between morphology and dynamical position angle differences between

The last gasps of VY CMa: Aperture synthesis and adaptive optics imagery
We present new observations of the red supergiant VY CMa at 1.25 micron, 1.65
micron, 2.26 micron, 3.08 micron and 4.8 micron. Two complementary
observational techniques were utilized: non-redundant aperture masking on the
10-m Keck-I telescope yielding images of the innermost regions at unprecedented
resolution, and adaptive optics imaging on the ESO 3.6-m telescope at La Silla
attaining extremely high (~10^5) peak-to-noise dynamic range over a wide field.
For the first time the inner dust shell has been resolved in the near-infrared
to reveal a one-sided extension of circumstellar emission within 0.1" (~15
R_star) of the star. The line-of-sight optical depths of the circumstellar dust
shell at 1.65 micron, 2.26 micron, and 3.08 micron have been estimated to be
1.86 +/- 0.42, 0.85 +/- 0.20, and 0.44 +/- 0.11. These new results allow the
bolometric luminosity of VY~CMa to be estimated independent of the dust shell
geometry, yielding L_star ~ 2x10^5 L_sun. A variety of dust condensations,
including a large scattering plume and a bow-shaped dust feature, were observed
in the faint, extended nebula up to 4" from the central source. While the
origin of the nebulous plume remains uncertain, a geometrical model is
developed assuming the plume is produced by radially-driven dust grains forming
at a rotating flow insertion point with a rotational period between 1200-4200
years, which is perhaps the stellar rotational period or the orbital period of

Little Things
We present LITTLE THINGS (Local Irregulars That Trace Luminosity Extremes,
The HI Nearby Galaxy Survey) that is aimed at determining what drives star
formation in dwarf galaxies. This is a multi-wavelength survey of 37 Dwarf
Irregular and 4 Blue Compact Dwarf galaxies that is centered around HI-line
data obtained with the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) Very Large
Array (VLA). The HI-line data are characterized by high sensitivity (less than
1.1 mJy/beam per channel), high spectral resolution (less than or equal to 2.6
km/s), and high angular resolution (~6 arcseconds. The LITTLE THINGS sample
contains dwarf galaxies that are relatively nearby (less than or equal to 10.3
Mpc; 6 arcseconds is less than or equal to 300 pc), that were known to contain
atomic hydrogen, the fuel for star formation, and that cover a large range in
dwarf galactic properties. We describe our VLA data acquisition, calibration,
and mapping procedures, as well as HI map characteristics, and show channel
maps, moment maps, velocity-flux profiles, and surface gas density profiles. In
addition to the HI data we have GALEX UV and ground-based UBV and Halpha images
for most of the galaxies, and JHK images for some. Spitzer mid-IR images are
available for many of the galaxies as well. These data sets are available
