The purpose of this present paper is to study the state of electronic voting. This term has gained strength in the past few years, and has the intention to improve election processes on paper, by increasing efficiency and reduc-ing errors that may come from this process, in which a lot of people are involved. Blockchain has gained a lot of popularity and has some charac-teristics that can help develop these systems by giving confidence to the people involved in the elections. This project is divided into 5 main characters. The first one explains what the project is about, the problem that has to be solved, the scope, and what are the expected results. The second one is how the project will be planned and developed, together with the budget and sustainability re-ports. In the third chapter, there is a historical and theoretical explanation of voting and e-voting, its implementations, advantages, and disadvantages. Following in chapter 4, the same theoretical explanation is done with blockchains. The aim of chapters 4 and 5 is to get a good background and understanding of the main concepts before diving into a practical part or any conclusions. Finally, in chapter 5, an electronic voting platform based on an Ethereum blockchain is implemented. In the end, conclusions about the overall project are given and the corre-sponding references are attached

Multivariate regression smoothing through the 'fallling net'.

    Get PDF
We consider multivariate regression smoothing through a conditional mean shift procedure. By computing local conditional means iteratively over a set or grid of target points, at each iteration a `net' is formed which gently drifts towards the data cloud, until it settles at the conditional modes of the response distribution. The method is edge-preserving and allows for multi-valued response

A Comparative Study on Extreme Heat between Guadalquivir Valley and Segura River Valleys: Trend and High Resolution Cartography

The Guadalquivir and Segura Valleys are geographical areas in the south of the Iberian Peninsula where extreme summer temperatures have great recurrence of extremely high values, especially during the last summers. A comparison of the characteristics of extreme heat between the two zones is proposed, analyzing the statistical trend (1900-2017) of the cities of Seville and Murcia and a detailed cartography of the warm poles of maximum and minimum temperatures is provided using high resolution modeling tools (AROME 1.3 km) and remote sensing (MYD11A1). The results are conclusive, since there is a statistically significant increase of the days with extreme heat indices (TX35, TX40 and TN20), while periods of warm spells (WSDI) increase in recurrence and duration

Bayesian hierarchical models for analysing the spatial distribution of bioclimatic indices

    Get PDF
A methodological approach for modelling the spatial distribution of bioclimatic indices is proposed in this paper. The value of the bioclimatic index is modelled with a hierarchical Bayesian model that incorporates both structured and unstructured random effects. Selection of prior distributions is also discussed in order to better incorporate any possible prior knowledge about the parameters that could refer to the particular characteristics of bioclimatic indices. MCMC methods and distributed programming are used to obtain an approximation of the posterior distribution of the parameters and also the posterior predictive distribution of the indices. One main outcome of the proposal is the spatial bioclimatic probability distribution of each bioclimatic index, which allows researchers to obtain the probability of each location belonging to different bioclimates. The methodology is evaluated on two indices in the Island of Cyprus.Peer Reviewe

Subjectivism as an unavoidable feature of ecological statistics

© 2014 Museu de Ciències Naturals de Barcelona. Subjectivism as an unavoidable feature of ecological statistics.— We approach here the handling of previous information when performing statistical inference in ecology, both when dealing with model specification and selection, and when dealing with parameter estimation. We compare the perspectives of this problem from the frequentist and Bayesian schools, including objective and subjective Bayesians. We show that the issue of making use of previous information and making a priori decisions is not only a reality for Bayesians but also for frequentists. However, the latter tend to overlook this because of the common difficulty of having previous information available on the magnitude of the effect that is thought to be biologically relevant. This prior information should be fed into a priori power tests when looking for the necessary sample sizes to couple statistical and biological significances. Ecologists should make a greater effort to make use of available prior information because this is their most legitimate contribution to the inferential process. Parameter estimation and model selection would benefit if this was done, allowing a more reliable accumulation of knowledge, and hence progress, in the biological sciences.Peer Reviewe

Satellite thermographies as an essential tool for the identification of cold air pools: an example from SE Spain

    Get PDF
The processes involved in the formation of nocturnal temperature inversions (NTIs) are of great relevance throughout the year, notably influencing the surface distribution of minimum temperatures during nights of atmospheric stability. The low density of surface meteorological stations in the study area motivated the use of thermographies for the mapping and identification of cold air pools CAPs. Thermal distribution during stable nights leads to the formation of CAPs in valley areas and depressed areas, and in areas with warmer air (WAM) in orographically complex areas. The thermographies carried out with satellite products from AQUA and SUOMI-NPP (MODIS and VIIRS LST) represent the only tool capable of fully radiographing the territory under study, thus overcoming the limitations in the interpolation of minimum surface temperatures. The main objective of the research was, therefore, to value thermography as an important tool in the identification of CAPs. The products used were subjected to statistical validation with the surface temperatures recorded in meteorological observatories (R2 0.87/0.88 and Bias −1.2/-1.3) with a new objective of making thermal distribution maps in nocturnal stability processes
