One model, two languages: training bilingual parsers with harmonized treebanks

We introduce an approach to train lexicalized parsers using bilingual corpora obtained by merging harmonized treebanks of different languages, producing parsers that can analyze sentences in either of the learned languages, or even sentences that mix both. We test the approach on the Universal Dependency Treebanks, training with MaltParser and MaltOptimizer. The results show that these bilingual parsers are more than competitive, as most combinations not only preserve accuracy, but some even achieve significant improvements over the corresponding monolingual parsers. Preliminary experiments also show the approach to be promising on texts with code-switching and when more languages are added.Comment: 7 pages, 4 tables, 1 figur

    Towards Syntactic Iberian Polarity Classification

Lexicon-based methods using syntactic rules for polarity classification rely on parsers that are dependent on the language and on treebank guidelines. Thus, rules are also dependent and require adaptation, especially in multilingual scenarios. We tackle this challenge in the context of the Iberian Peninsula, releasing the first symbolic syntax-based Iberian system with rules shared across five official languages: Basque, Catalan, Galician, Portuguese and Spanish. The model is made available.Comment: 7 pages, 5 tables. Contribution to the 8th Workshop on Computational Approaches to Subjectivity, Sentiment and Social Media Analysis (WASSA-2017) at EMNLP 201

A new manual wheelchair propulsion system with self-locking capability on ramps

    Get PDF
A wheelchair user faces many difficulties in their everyday attempts to use ramps, especially those of some length. The present work describes the design and build of a propulsion system for manual wheelchairs for use in ascending or descending long ramps. The design is characterized by a self-locking mechanism that activates automatically to brake the chair when the user stops pushing. The system consists of a planetary transmission with a self-locking capacity coupled to a push rim with which the user moves the system. Different transmission ratios are proposed, adapted to the slope and to the user’s physical capacity (measured as the power the user can apply over ample time periods). The design is shown to be viable in terms of resistance, and approximate dimensions are established for the height and width of the propulsion system. Also, a prototype was built in order to test the self-locking system on ramps

[Abstract] Dealing with negation in a proper way is a relevant factor in order to obtain high performance sentiment analysis systems. In this framework, we present a method for the treatment of negation in Spanish that exploits the syntactic information obtained from a dependency parser trained on the Ancora corpus, together with a set of specific rules. Next, we generalize this method to a multilingual environment in which the harmonized framework of annotation provided by the Universal Dependencies is exploited, along with a generic formalism to define language-independent rules that determine the scope of negation. The experimental results support the effectiveness of the method, both on monolingual and multilingual environments.[Resumen] Tratar adecuadamente la negación es importante para obtener sistemas de análisis del sentimiento de alto rendimiento.

Teenage visions of gender violence and couple relations

Trough this work we want to put forward some of the beliefs that the youngsters and teenagers surveyed share in relation to gender violence and couple relations. Such beliefs show certain distortions that may drive to the configuration of gender discriminatory relationships, the reproduction of socially legitimated male/female stereotypes, and tolerance of abusive situations that make youngsters either minimize or be unable to recognize certain signs of violenc

Responding to this conceptual gap in the discipline of psychology, and to the possible enrichment that reflections on the subject can bring to its understanding and to the clinic with couples and families, this work sets out to establish the way in which this practice brings about a multidimensional well-being, from the experience and direct voice of four polyamorous subjects. For this, the research uses phenomenological discourse analysis, in dialogue with positive psychology and Carol Ryff's model of psychological well-being

Sentiment Analysis for Fake News Detection

[Abstract] In recent years, we have witnessed a rise in fake news, i.e., provably false pieces of information created with the intention of deception. The dissemination of this type of news poses a serious threat to cohesion and social well-being, since it fosters political polarization and the distrust of people with respect to their leaders. The huge amount of news that is disseminated through social media makes manual verification unfeasible, which has promoted the design and implementation of automatic systems for fake news detection. The creators of fake news use various stylistic tricks to promote the success of their creations, with one of them being to excite the sentiments of the recipients. This has led to sentiment analysis, the part of text analytics in charge of determining the polarity and strength of sentiments expressed in a text, to be used in fake news detection approaches, either as a basis of the system or as a complementary element. In this article, we study the different uses of sentiment analysis in the detection of fake news, with a discussion of the most relevant elements and shortcomings, and the requirements that should be met in the near future, such as multilingualism, explainability, mitigation of biases, or treatment of multimedia elements.Xunta de Galicia; ED431G 2019/01Xunta de Galicia; ED431C 2020/11This work has been funded by FEDER/Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades — Agencia Estatal de Investigación through the ANSWERASAP project (TIN2017-85160-C2-1-R); and by Xunta de Galicia through a Competitive Reference Group grant (ED431C 2020/11).
